Abstract:A fixed point theorem is used to study a singular second order three-point boundary value problem. The problem is more general. Combining the method of constructing Green functions with operators defined piecewise, the existence result of positive solutions to a singular second order three-point boundary value problem is established. The nonlinearity can be allowed to change sign.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">This paper focuses on a degenerate boundary value problem arising from the study of the two-dimensional Riemann problem to the nonlinear wave system. In order to deal with the parabolic degeneracy, we introduce a partial hodograph transformation to transform the nonlinear wave system into a new system, which displays a clear regularity–singularity structure. The local existence of classical solutions for the new system is established in a weighted metric space. Returning the solution to the original variables, we obtain the existence of classical solutions to the degenerate boundary value problem for the nonlinear wave system.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, the long-time behaviour of solutions of a class of nonlinear parabolic equations is studied. It is shown that the solutions of initial-boundary value problem to the equations converge to a travelling wave solution of the equation or a self-similar solution of a Hamilton–Jacobi equation under certain conditions on initial and boundary values of the solutions.

Abstract:We study a free boundary value problem of multidimensional unsteady potential Row equation. The problem is defined in a domain bounded by two conical surfaces, one is given, and other is to be determined. In self-similar coordinates the problem can be reduced to a free boundary value problem of an elliptic equation. Then the existence of the solution is proved by using partial hodograph transformation and nonlinear alternating iteration. This result indicates that the structure of the weak solution with discontinuity is stable under small perturbation of data.

Abstract:We consider a mixed type boundary value problem for a class of degenerate parabolic–hyperbolic equations. Namely, we consider a Cartesian product domain and split its boundary into two parts. In one of them we impose a Dirichlet boundary condition; in the other, we impose a Neumann condition. We apply a normal trace formula for L 2-divergence-measure fields to prove a new strong trace property in the part of the boundary where the Neumann condition is imposed. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the entropy solution.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce some new concepts for second-order hyperbolic equations: two-point boundary value problem, global exact controllability and exact controllability. For several kinds of important linear and nonlinear wave equations arising from physics and geometry, we prove the existence of smooth solutions of the two-point boundary value problems and show the global exact controllability of these wave equations. In particular, we investigate the two-point boundary value problem for one-dimensional wave equation defined on a closed curve and prove the existence of smooth solution which implies the exact controllability of this kind of wave equation. Furthermore, based on this, we study the two-point boundary value problems for the wave equation defined on a strip with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions and show that the equation still possesses the exact controllability in these cases. Finally, as an application, we introduce the hyperbolic curvature flow and obtain a result analogous to the well-known theorem of Gage and Hamilton for the curvature flow of plane curves.

Abstract:Bernoulli's free boundary problem is an overdetermined problem in which one seeks an annular domain such that the capacitary potential satisfies an extra boundary condition. There exist two different types of solutions called elliptic and hyperbolic solutions. Elliptic solutions are ``stable'' solutions and tractable by variational methods and maximum principles, while hyperbolic solutions are ``unstable'' solutions of which the qualitative behavior is less known. We introduce a new implicit function theorem based on the parabolic maximal regularity, which is applicable to problems with loss of derivatives. Clarifying the spectral structure of the corresponding linearized operator by harmonic analysis, we prove the existence of foliated hyperbolic solutions as well as elliptic solutions in the same regularity class.
