Abstract:In this paper, both the optimal control problems and the stability for the state-feedback of an unstable linear parabolic diffusion-reaction partical differential equations (PDEs) system with an actuator at the right-hand-side boundary are considered. Using the weak variation approach, we firstly derive the first order necessary conditions for the open loop finite-time horizon problem. Then, we discuss the state-feedback problem of the open loop PDEs system, and get the result of the feedback law through solving a Riccati partial differential equation. Finally, with the feedback law, we prove out the exponential stability for the state-feedback problem that is very innovative and instructive by using the lyapunov method.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider an unstable linear parabolic diffusion-reaction PDE system with an actuator at the right boundary via the Dirichlet condition. We begin to derive the first order necessary conditions for the open loop finite-time horizon problem using the classical variational approach. Then, we discuss the the state-feedback problem, and obtain the feedback law by formulating the Riccati partial differential equation (PDE). Finally, with the feedback law, we could prove the stability for the state-feedback problem exponential stability with any given decay rate in the time domain without solving the Riccati PDE.

Abstract:In this paper, we study an optimal control problem arising in plasma transport which is governed by a singularly perturbed system. Time-scale separation allows us to focus on an uncoupled parabolic PDE with diffusivity-interior-boundary actuation. We prove the existence of the optimal control solution and carry out numerical experiments using quadratic programming (SQP).

Abstract:We consider the stabilization of discrete-time nonlinear OdE systems under discrete transport PdEs which convect in opposite directions. An explicit feedback law that compensates discrete transport PdEs actuator dynamics is designed. Global asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is proved with the aid of a Lyapunov function. The feedback design is illustrated through an example. The proposed design in this paper allows the delay to be arbitrarily long and timevarying. Furthermore, our predictor feedback law in discrete time is explicit as the predictor state is computed by an algebraic equation.

Abstract:Optimal control for improving the stability and reliability of nonlinear stochastic dynamical systems is of great significance for enhancing system performances. However, it has not been adequately investigated because the evaluation indicators for stability (e.g. maximal Lyapunov exponent) and for reliability (e.g. mean first-passage time) cannot be explicitly expressed as the functions of system states. Here, a unified procedure is established to derive optimal control strategies for improving system stability and reliability, in which a physical intuition-inspired separation technique is adopted to split feedback control forces into conservative components and dissipative components, the stochastic averaging is then utilized to express the evaluation indicators of performances of controlled system, the optimal control strategies are finally derived by minimizing the performance indexes constituted by the sigmoid function of maximal Lyapunov exponent (for stability-based control)/the reciprocal of mean first-passage time (for reliability-based control), and the mean value of quadratic form of control force. The unified procedure converts the original functional extreme problem of optimal control into an extremum value problem of multivariable function which can be solved by optimization algorithms. A numerical example is worked out to illustrate the efficacy of the optimal control strategies for enhancing system performance.

A relaxed problem is constructed by homogenization. By studying the G -closure problem, a local representation of admissible set of relaxed control is given. Abstract:This paper studies the periodic feedback stabilization for a class of linear T-periodic evolution equations. Several equivalent conditions on the linear periodic feedback stabilization are obtained. These conditions are related to the following subjects: the attainable subspace of the controlled evolution equation under consideration; the unstable subspace (of the evolution equation with the null control) provided by the Kato projection; the Poincaré map associated with the evolution equation with the null control; and two unique continuation properties for the dual equations on different time horizons [0,T] and [0,n0T] (where n0 is the sum of algebraic multiplicities of distinct unstable eigenvalues of the Poincaré map). It is also proved that a T-periodic controlled evolution equation is linear T-periodic feedback stabilizable if and only if it is linear T-periodic feedback stabilizable with respect to a finite-dimensional subspace. Some applications to heat equations with time-periodic potentials are presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we study an optimal control problem for a coupled non-linear system of reaction-diffusion equations with degenerate diffusion, consisting of two partial differential equations representing the density of cells and the concentration of the chemotactic agent. By controlling the concentration of the chemical substrates, this study can guide the optimal growth of cells. The novelty of this work lies on the direct and dual models that remain in a weak setting, which is uncommon in the recent literature for solving optimal control systems. Moreover, it is known that the adjoint problems offer a powerful approach to quantifying the uncertainty associated with model inputs. However, these systems typically lack closed-form solutions, making it challenging to obtain weak solutions. For that, the well-posedness of the direct problem is first well guaranteed. Then, the existence of an optimal control and the first-order optimality conditions are established. Finally, weak solutions for the adjoint system to the non-linear degenerate direct model, are introduced and investigated.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study the asymptotic behavior of the time-dependent solutions to a coupled system of reaction-diffusion equations with periodic coefficients in unbounded domains, including the whole space R-n, the exterior Omega(e) of a bounded domain and the half-space R-+(n) = {x = (x(1), . . . , x(n)) is an element of R-n; x(n) > 0}, under Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is shown that if the reaction function in the system possesses a mixed quasi monotone property and the corresponding periodic system has a pair of coupled upper and lower solutions then the periodic system has a pair of quasi-solutions and the sector between the quasi-solutions is an attractor of the system of periodic reaction-diffusion equations. Under some additional conditions this attractor leads to the asymptotic stability of a periodic solution for the periodic system. The approach to the problem is based on the method of upper and lower solutions, a ladder argument and a bootstrap technique. Finally, a competitor-competitor-mutualist model is given to illustrate the obtained results.

A periodically intermittent controller based on discrete time state observations is designed. The core idea of this paper is to derive the stability of the controlled system by constructing Lyapunov function. An example is given to prove the validity of the conclusion.

The algorithms are tested on regular 1D domains with multiple subdomains, and the analysis focuses on how different constant values of the generalized diffusion coefficient affect the convergence of these algorithms.

Abstract:This paper focuses on optimal control problem for a class of discrete-time nonlinear systems. In practical applications, computation time is a crucial consideration in solving optimal control problem, especially when meeting the real-time requirements of control systems. To address this challenge, this study proposes a novel framework based on the optimal control method. Firstly, the original optimal control problem is transformed into an equivalent optimization problem, which is resolved using the Pontryagin's maximum principle from the perspective of optimal control. Furthermore, explicit formulas for computing both the gradient and hessian matrix of the cost function are proposed. A numerical algorithm with rapid convergence and high efficiency is also provided.

Abstract:This paper focuses on investigating the optimal actuator location for achieving minimum norm controls in the context of approximate controllability for degenerate parabolic equations. We propose a formulation of the optimization problem that encompasses both the actuator location and its associated minimum norm control. Specifically, we transform the problem into a two-person zero-sum game problem, resulting in the development of four equivalent formulations. Finally, we establish the crucial result that the solution to the relaxed optimization problem serves as an optimal actuator location for the classical problem.

Abstract:We prove local well-posedness for the periodic derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which is (L^2) critical, in Fourier-Lebesgue spaces which scale like ({H}^s({mathbb {T}})) for (s>0). Our result is optimal in the sense that it covers the full subcritical regime. In particular we close the existing gap in the subcritical theory by improving the result of Grünrock and Herr (SIAM J Math Anal 39(6):1890–1920, 2008), which established local well-posedness in Fourier-Lebesgue spaces which scale like ({H}^s({mathbb {T}})) for (s >frac{1}{4}). We achieve this result by a delicate analysis of the structure of the solution and the construction of an adapted nonlinear submanifold of a suitable function space. Together these allow us to construct the unique solution to the given subcritical data. This constructive procedure is inspired by the theory of para-controlled distributions developed by Gubinelli et al. (Forum Math Pi, 3:75, 2015) and Catellier and Chouk (Ann Probab 46(5):2621–2679, 2018) in the context of stochastic PDE. Our proof and results however, are purely deterministic.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the existence of mild solutions as well as optimal controls for non-autonomous impulsive evolution equations with nonlocal conditions. Using the Schauder's fixed-point theorem as well as the theory of evolution family, we prove the existence of mild solutions for the concerned problem. Furthermore, without the Lipschitz continuity of the nonlinear term, the optimal control result is derived by setting up minimizing sequences twice. An example is given of the application of the results.

Abstract:We consider a class of stochastic control problems which has been widely used in optimal foraging theory. The state processes have two distinct dynamics, characterized by two pairs of drift and diffusion coefficients, depending on whether it takes values bigger or smaller than a threshold value. Adopting a perturbation type approach, we find an expression for potential measure of the optimal state process. We then obtain an expression for the transition density of the optimal state process by inverting the associated Laplace transform. Properties including the stationary distribution of the optimal state process are discussed. Finally, the expression of the value function is given for this class stochastic control problems.

Abstract:We consider optimal control of fractional in time (subdiffusive, i.e., for $% 0<\gamma <1$) semilinear parabolic PDEs associated with various notions of diffusion operators in an unifying fashion. Under general assumptions on the nonlinearity we{~\textsf{first show}} the existence and regularity of solutions to the forward and the associated {\textsf{backward (adjoint)}} problems. In the second part, we prove existence of optimal {\textsf{controls% }} and characterize the associated {\textsf{first order}} optimality conditions. Several examples involving fractional in time (and some fractional in space diffusion) equations are described in detail. The most challenging obstacle we overcome is the failure of the\ semigroup property for the semilinear problem in any scaling of (frequency-domain) Hilbert spaces.
