Abstract:Let G be a simple connected graph of order n (n≥6) with spectral radius ρ(G).This paper gives the first eight largest spectral radii of graphs ρ(Kn) ＞ρ(Kn-K2) ＞ρ(Kn-P3) ＞ρ(Kn-2K2) ＞ ρ(Kn-K1,3) ＞ρ(Kn-C3) ＞ρ(Kn-P4) ＞ρ(Kn-P3∪K2).

Abstract:The spectral radius of a graph is the largest eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix. A minimizer graph is such that minimizes the spectral radius among all connected graphs on n vertices with diameter d. The minimizer graphs are known for d∈{1,2}∪[n/2,2n/3−1]∪{n−k|k=1,2,…,8}. In this paper, we determine all minimizer graphs for d=2(n−1)/3.

Abstract:We consider the set Gn,k of graphs of order n with the chromatic number k≥2. In this note, we prove that in Gn,k the Turán graph Tn,k has the maximal spectral radius; and Pn if k=2, Cn if k=3 and n is odd, Cn−11 if k=3 and n is even, Kk(l) if k≥4 has the minimal spectral radius. Thus we answer a problem raised by Cao [D.S. Cao, Index function of graphs, J. East China Norm. Univ. Sci. Ed. 4 (1987) 1–8 (in Chinese). MR89m:05084] and Hong [Y. Hong, Bounds of eigenvalues of graphs, Discrete Math. 123 (1993) 65–74] in the affirmative.

Abstract:The Aα -matrix of a graph G is defined as the convex linear combination of the adjacency matrix A(G) and the diagonal matrix of degrees D(G) , i.e. Aα(G)=αD(G)+(1−α)A(G) with α∈[0,1] . The maximum modulus among all Aα -eigenvalues is called the Aα -spectral radius. In this paper, we order the connected graphs with size m and diameter (at least) d from the second to the (⌊d2⌋+1) th regarding to the Aα -spectral radius for α∈[12,1) . As by-products, we identify the first ⌊d2⌋ largest trees of order n and diameter (at least) d in terms of their Aα -spectral radii, and characterize the unique graph with at least one cycle having the largest Aα -spectral radius among graphs of size m and diameter (at least) d . Consequently, the corresponding results for signless Laplacian matrix can be deduced as well.

Long cycles and spectral radii in planar graphs

Abstract:There is a rich history of studying the existence of cycles in planar graphs. The famous Tutte theorem on the Hamilton cycle states that every 4-connected planar graph contains a Hamilton cycle. Later on, Thomassen (1983), Thomas and Yu (1994) and Sanders (1996) respectively proved that every 4-connected planar graph contains a cycle of length $n-1, n-2$ and $n-3$. Chen, Fan and Yu (2004) further conjectured that every 4-connected planar graph contains a cycle of length $\ell$ for $\ell\in\{n,n-1,\ldots,n-25\}$ and they verified that $\ell\in \{n-4, n-5, n-6\}$. When we remove the ``4-connected" condition, how to guarantee the existence of a long cycle in a planar graph? A natural question asks by adding a spectral radius condition: What is the smallest constant $C$ such that for sufficiently large $n$, every graph $G$ of order $n$ with spectral radius greater than $C$ contains a long cycle in a planar graph? In this paper, we give a stronger answer to the above question. Let $G$ be a planar graph with order $n\geq 1.8\times 10^{17}$ and $k\leq \lfloor\log_2(n-3)\rfloor-8$ be a non-negative integer, we show that if $\rho(G)\geq \rho(K_2\vee(P_{n-2k-4}\cup 2P_{k+1}))$ then $G$ contains a cycle of length $\ell$ for every $\ell\in \{n-k, n-k-1, \ldots, 3\}$ unless $G\cong K_2\vee(P_{n-2k-4}\cup 2P_{k+1})$.

Graphs with Small Independence Number Minimizing the Spectral Radius

Abstract:The independence number of a graph is defined as the maximum size of a set of pairwise non-adjacent vertices and the spectral radius is defined as the maximum eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of the graph. Xu et al. in [The minimum spectral radius of graphs with a given independence number, Linear Algebra and its Applications431 (2009) 937–945] determined the connected graphs of order n with independence number [Formula: see text] which minimize the spectral radius. In this paper, we show that the graph obtained from a path of order α by blowing up each vertex to a clique of order k minimizes the spectral radius among all connected graphs of order kα with independence number α for α = 3, 4 and conjecture that this is true for all α ∈ ℕ.

Abstract:We study the spectral radius of graphs with n vertices and k cut edges. In this paper, we show that of all the connected graphs with n vertices and k cut edges, the maximal spectral radius is obtained uniquely at Knk, where Knk is a graph obtained by joining k independent vertices to one vertex of Kn−k. We also discuss the limit point of the maximal spectral radius.

Abstract:Let D be a digraph with vertex set V(D). A partition of V(D) into k acyclic sets is called a k-coloring of D. The minimum integer k for which there exists a k-coloring of D is the dichromatic number χ(D) of the digraph D. Denote Gn,k the set of the digraphs of order n with the dichromatic number k≥2. In this note, we characterize the digraph which has the maximal spectral radius in Gn,k. Our result generalizes the result of [8] by Feng et al.

Abstract:Li, Shiu, Chan and Chang [On the spectral radius of graphs with connectivity at most k, J. Math. Chem., 46 (2009), 340-346] studied the spectral radius of graphs of order n with κ(G) ≤ k and showed that among those graphs, the maximum spectral radius is obtained uniquely at $K_k^n$, which is the graph obtained by joining k edges from k vertices of K n − 1 to an isolated vertex. In this paper, we study the spectral radius of graphs of order n with κ(G) ≤ k and minimum degree δ(G) ≥ k . We show that among those graphs, the maximum spectral radius is obtained uniquely at K k + (K δ − k + 1 ∪ K n − δ − 1).

Abstract:In this paper we study three families of graphs, one is the graphs of order n with connectivity κ(G)≤k and minimum degree δ(G)≥k. We show that among the graphs in this family, the maximum spectral radius is obtained uniquely at Kk+(Kδ−k+1∪Kn−δ−1). Another family of the graphs we study is the family of bipartite graphs with order n and connectivity k. We show that among the graphs in this family the maximum spectral radius is obtained at a graph modified from K⌊n/2⌋,n−1−⌊n/2⌋. The third family of graphs we have studied is the family of graphs with order n, connectivity k and independence number r. We determine the graphs in this family that have the maximum spectral radius.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the relationship between spectral radius and maximum average degree of graphs. By using this relationship and the previous technique of Li and Ning in (J Graph Theory 103:486–492, 2023), we prove that, for any given positive number , if n is a sufficiently large integer, then any graph G of order n with contains a cycle of length t for all integers , where is the spectral radius of G . This improves the result of Li and Ning (2023).

Abstract:The Kirchhoff index $Kf(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the sum of resistance distances between all unordered pairs of vertices, which was introduced by Klein and Randi\'c. In this paper we characterized all extremal graphs with Kirchhoff index among all graphs obtained by deleting $p$ edges from a complete graph $K_n$ with $p\leq\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor$ and obtained a sharp upper bound on the Kirchhoff index of these graphs. In addition, all the graphs with the first to ninth maximal Kirchhoff indices are completely determined among all connected graphs of order $n>27$.

Abstract:Nikiforov [The spectral radius of graphs without paths and cycles of specified length. Linear Algebra Appl. 2010;432(9):2243-2256] conjectured that for a given integer k, any graph G of sufficiently large order n with spectral radius mu(G) >= mu(S-n,S-k) contains all trees of order 2k+2, unless G = S-n,S-k, where Sn, k = Kk boolean OR (K-n,K-k) over bar denotes the join of a complete graph of order k and an empty graph of order n-k. In this article, we show that the conjecture is true for trees of diameter at most four, more specifically, we prove that, for k = 2 and n > 2(k + 2)(4), every graph G of order n with mu(G) = mu(S-n,S-k) contains all trees T of order 2k+2 and of diameter at most four as a subgraph, unless G = S-n,S-k.

Abstract:Nikiforov (2002) showed that if G is Kr+1-free then the spectral radius ρ(G)≤2m(1−1∕r), which implies that G contains C3 if ρ(G)>m. In this paper, we follow this direction in determining which subgraphs will be contained in G if ρ(G)>f(m), where f(m)∼m as m→∞. We first show that if ρ(G)≥m, then G contains K2,r+1 unless G is a star; and G contains either C3+ or C4+ unless G is a complete bipartite graph, where Ct+ denotes the graph obtained from Ct and C3 by identifying an edge. Secondly, we prove that if ρ(G)≥12+m−34, then G contains pentagon and hexagon unless G is a book; and if ρ(G)>12(k−12)+m+14(k−12)2, then G contains Ct for every t≤2k+2. In the end, some related conjectures are provided for further research.

Abstract:The spectral radius rho(G) of a graph G is the largest eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix A(G). For a fixed integer e >= 1, let G(n,) (min)(n-e) be a graph with minimal spectral radius among all connected graphs on n vertices with diameter n-e. Let P-n1, n2,....n1, p(m1, m2,....mt) be a tree obtained from a path of p vertices (0 similar to 1 similar to 2 similar to . . . similar to (p - 1)) by linking one pendant path P-ni at m(i) for each i is an element of {1, 2. . . . , t}. Fore = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. G(n, n-e)(min) were determined in the literature. Cioaba et al. [2] conjectured for fixed e >= 6. G(n, n-e)(min) is in the family P-n,P- e = {P-2, 1,....1, 2, n-e+1(2, m2,....me-4, n-e-2) vertical bar 2 < m(2) < . . . < m(e-4) < n - e - 2}. For e = 6, 7, they conjectured G(n, n-6)(min) = P-2, 1, 2, n-5(2, inverted right perpendicularD-1/2inverted left perpendicular, D-2) and G(n, n-7)(min) = P-2,P- 1,P- 1,P- 2,P- n-62,P- left perpendicularD+2/3right perpendicular,P- D- left perpendicularD+2/3right perpendicular,P- D-2. In this paper, we settle their conjectures positively. Note that any tree in P-n,P- e is uniquely determined by its internal path lengths. For any e - 4 non-negative integers k1, k2, . . . , k(e-4), let T-(k1,T- k2,T-....ke-4) = P-2, 1,.... 1, 2, n-e+1(2, m2,....me-4, n-e-2) with k(i) = m(i+1) - m(i) - 1, for 1 <= i <= e - 4. Abstract:Let Cℓ be a cycle of length ℓ and Sn,k=Kk∨Kn−k‾, the join graph of a complete graph of order k and an empty graph on n−k vertices, and Sn,k+ be the graph obtained from Sn,k by adding an edge in the independent set of Sn,k. Nikiforov conjectured that for a given integer k≥2, any graph G of sufficiently large order n with spectral radius μ(G)≥μ(Sn,k) (or μ(G)≥μ(Sn,k+)) contains C2k+1 or C2k+2 (or C2k+2), unless G=Sn,k (or G=Sn,k+). In this paper, a weaker version of Nikiforov's conjecture is considered, we prove that for a given integer k≥2, any graph G of sufficiently large order n with spectral radius μ(G)≥μ(Sn,k) (or μ(G)≥μ(Sn,k+)) contains a cycle Cℓ with ℓ≥2k+1 (or Cℓ with ℓ≥2k+2), unless G=Sn,k (or G=Sn,k+). These results also imply a result given by Nikiforov in (2010) [3, Theorem 2].

Abstract:The spectral radius ρ(G) of a graph G is the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix A(G). Suppose a graph G0 maximizes the spectral radius over the class of graphs of order n with fixed minimum degree δ and edge connectivity κ′<δ. In this paper, we mainly show that G0≅Bn,δκ′, where Bn,δκ′ is obtained by adding κ′ edges between Kδ+1 and Kn−δ−1. A property of the adjacency matrix of G0 is also obtained. Moreover, graphs that maximize ρ(G) over the class of graphs with minimum degree δ and edge-connectivity κ′, for κ′=0,1,2,3,δ, are completely determined.

Technol. 28 (1998) 513–518] and Guo [J.M. Guo, On the Laplacian spectral radius of a tree, Linear Algebra Appl. 368 (2003) 379–385] give the first four trees in Tn, ordered according to their Laplacian spectral radii. In this paper, we determine the fifth to eighth trees in the above ordering.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{G}(m,k)$ be the set of graphs with size $m$ and odd girth (the length of shortest odd cycle) $k$. In this paper, we determine the graph maximizing the spectral radius among $\mathcal{G}(m,k)$ when $m$ is odd. As byproducts, we show that, there is a number $\eta(m,k)>\sqrt{m-k+3}$ such that every non bipartite graph $G$ with size $m$ and spectral radius $\rho\ge \eta(m,k)$ must contain an odd cycle of length less than $k$ unless $m$ is odd and $G\cong SK_{k,m}$, which is the graph obtained by subdividing an edge $k-2$ times of the complete bipartite graph $K_{2,\frac{m-k+2}{2}}$. This result implies the main results of Zhai and Shu [Discrete Math. 345 (2022)] and settles a conjecture of Li and Peng [The Electronic J. Combin. 29 (4) (2022)] as well.
