Abstract:The Internet has become a major part of the global communications infrastructure supporting modern-day socio-economic development, social progress and technological innovation. Invented 30 years ago, today the Internet is facing severe challenges. Many countries have funded research projects on the new-generation Internet, such as GENI, FIND, FIRE and CNGI, in an effort to solve these challenges. In addition, over the past few years, the networking research community has engaged in an ongoing conversation about how to move the Internet forward, and there are now two different approaches towards Internet research. The first approach is based on using the existing Internet architecture to solve the major technical challenges-this is called 'evolutionary' research. The other, which is called the 'clean slate', involves the design of an entirely new Internet architecture. In the first part of this paper, the basic features of the next generation Internet and its principal contradictions are analysed. Then a survey of recent progress in the study of the next generation Internet in China is discussed. Finally, the focus and direction for the next step in research are presented as based on fundamental research into the international next generation Internet architecture, and the many new innovative demands placed on Internet architecture in recent years.

Abstract:T he next generation network is a high-speed broadband network based on the packets, which offers unrestricted access by users to different service providers. It supports generalized mobility which will allow consistent and ubiquitous provision of services to users. The wireless communication network is an important part of the next generation network. With the rapid development of wireless networks and smart-phone techniques, more and more image, video and other high data rate services are expected to be deployed, which lead to great interests to devise new innovative wireless technologies. There have been some breakthroughs in multiple access, advanced waveform technologies combined with advances in coding and modulation, algorithms and architecture.

Abstract:This special issue of Networking Science focuses on Next Generation Network (NGN) that enables the deployment of access independent services over converged fixed and mobile networks.NGN is a packet-based network and uses the Internet protocol (IP) to transport the various types of traffic (voice, video, data and signalling).NGN facilitates easy adoption of distributed computing applications by providing high speed connectivity in a converged networked environment.It also makes end user devices and applications highly intelligent and efficient by empowering them with programmability and remote configuration options.However, there are a number of important challenges in provisioning next generation network technologies in a converged communication environment.Some preliminary challenges include those that relate to QoS, switching and routing, management and control, and security which must be addressed on an urgent or emergency basis.The consideration of architectural issues in the design and provision of secure services for NGN deserves special attention and hence is the main theme of this special issue.

Abstract:The first design of Internet is a task driven product. Designers have never thought that the Internet can increase into today's popularity. So the shortcomings of traditional Internet are ineluctable. To cope with these shortcomings and design a more reasonable next generation network architecture, we propose NGNA which is a two-layer structure naming service layer and transmission layer. Server layer is used for service registration and retrieval, and we use the idea of cloud computing and register all the resources in cloud part, so users do not store any resource. Transmission layer is used for data package transmission and we use multipath structure. Then we analyze the NGNA in the following aspects: reliability, security and scalability. The outcome is that NGNA has good performance in these characters.

Abstract:Research of next generation networks (NGNs) is an absorbing and challenging filed in recent years. As the rapid development of wireless network and communication technology, the architecture of NGNs needs to be discussed to counter the new situation. This paper introduces the wisdom design principle and proposes a novel wisdom oriented architecture based on NGNs. In addition, the function framework is analysed subsequently. The achievements obtained in this paper favour the development of NGNs and the relative networks.

Abstract:Compared with current existing multimedia conference service techniques based on H.323, the features and advantages of multimedia conference service provided in the next generation network(NGN) are depicted in the paper. Furthermore, techniques to implement multimedia conference service among NGN functional entities such as media gateways, softswitch controllers, media servers and application servers are proposed. Abstract:Key issues about the research of the computer network and next-generation network in the future are detailed. Chaotic theory, stochastic process, curse of dimensionality theory and control theory are integrated for the analysis of network behavior, and therefore the network behavior is measured. It is emphasized that new protocols and technology should be used in the Internet architecture in order to meet the increasing requirements of different functions. The concrete contents of the network-oriented basic research are introduced. It is necessary to explore a completely new network architecture so as to solve network privacy problems thoroughly. It is pointed out that theories and methods for the mobile network architecture and the framework of network fundamental facilities should be systematically researched. Research on the open applied platform will emphasize on the unified and open distributed object computing platform architecture and its implementation techniques, and modes and methods to develop distributed software systems based on the distributed object computing platform. At last, suggestions for the research of the next-generation network are presented.
