Abstract:Based on years of experience on the study of controlled-release fertilizers and the extensive reference of both national and international research results,the research developments of controlled-release fertilizers in China were discussed by the authors.The academic value,economic significance,cutting-in and goal of the controlled-release fertilizer research in China were also analyzed and discussed.The research and development(R & D) of controlled-release fertilizers with social demand and economic development were illustrated.The paper distinguished concept of controlled-release fertilizer from slow-release fertilizer,and discussed the significance to distinguish between controlled-release fertilizer and slow-release fertilizer.The history and status of controlled-release fertilizers research in China were reviewed.The history of research on the controlled-release fertilizers in China can be divided into 3 stages: the exploration period,the popularization period,and the integration and industrialization period for major technologies.Through the comparison of the controlled-release fertilizer research in China and abroad,the analysis on the trend and characteristics of the R & D of the controlled-release fertilizers in China and the discussion on the frontier field of controlled-release fertilizers,this article foresees the controlled-release fertilizer industry and indicates the direction for future research in China.

Abstract:Rising world population is expected to increase the demand for nitrogen fertilizers to improve crop yield and ensure food security. With existing challenges on low nutrient use efficiency (NUE) of urea and its environmental concerns, controlled release fertilizers (CRFs) have become a potential solution by formulating them to synchronize nutrient release according to the requirement of plants. However, the most significant challenge that persists is the “tailing” effect, which reduces the economic benefits in terms of maximum fertilizer utilization. High materials cost is also a significant obstacle restraining the widespread application of CRF in agriculture. The first part of this review covers issues related to the application of conventional fertilizer and CRFs in general. In the subsequent sections, different raw materials utilized to form CRFs, focusing on inorganic and organic materials and synthetic and natural polymers alongside their physical and chemical preparation methods, are compared. Important factors affecting rate of release, mechanism of release and mathematical modelling approaches to predict nutrient release are also discussed. This review aims to provide a better overview of the developments regarding CRFs in the past ten years, and trends are identified and analyzed to provide an insight for future works in the field of agriculture.

Abstract:Pesticides are commonly used in modern agriculture and are important for global food security. However, postapplication losses due to degradation, photolysis, evaporation, leaching, surface runoff, and other processes may substantially reduce their efficacy. Controlled-release formulations can achieve the permeation-regulated transfer of an active ingredient from a reservoir to a target surface. Thus, they can maintain an active ingredient at a predetermined concentration for a specified period. This can reduce degradation and dissipation and other losses and has the potential to improve efficacy. Recent developments in controlled-release technology have adapted the concepts of intelligence and precision from the pharmaceutical industry. In this review, we present recent advances in the development of controlled-release formulations and discuss details of the preparation methods, material improvements, and application technologies.

Abstract:Various fertilizers have been widely used in agricultures and horticultures. More than 400 million tons fertilizers are used in the world every year. However,fertilizer cannot be resealed in dry soil, and could be flashed out with heaven rain or irrigation without controlling into river, which results in polluting water resources. Actually, fertilizers have already caused serious pollution for rivers and degeneration of land. Therefore, various controlled release fertilizers have been developed. This paper reviewed development of controlled release fertilizer based on both fundamental issues such as system designing and mechanisms, and materials used for coating as well as their fabrication. So far most of the materials used for coating are synthetic polymeric materials, such as PS, PE etc.,which are not biodegradable. Environmentally friendly biodegradable coatings have attracted increasingly attention,but still in development stage in laboratory. On the other hand, dry and desertification are big challenges for agriculture in China. Using superabsorbent polymers as coating materials could add the function of keeping moisture for the fertilizer, which is particularly important for dry area. It is expected that the superabsorbent polymer coatings could be favorable for crops through helping seed sprout; increasing sprouting ratio, reducing irrigation and enhancing fertilizer efficiency etc.

Abstract:Owing to the high demand for fertilizer formulations that will exhaust the possibilities of nutrient use efficiency (NUE), regulate fertilizer consumption, and lessen agrophysicochemical properties and environmental adverse effects instigated by conventional nutrient supply to crops, this review recapitulates controlled release fertilizers (CRFs) as a cutting-edge and safe way to supply crops’ nutrients over the conventional ways. Essentially, CRFs entail fertilizer particles intercalated within excipients aiming at reducing the frequency of fertilizer application thereby abating potential adverse effects linked with conventional fertilizer use. Application of nanotechnology and materials engineering in agriculture particularly in the design of CRFs, the distinctions and classification of CRFs, and the economical, agronomical, and environmental aspects of CRFs has been revised putting into account the development and synthesis of CRFs, laboratory CRFs syntheses and testing, and both linear and sigmoid release features of CRF formulations. Methodical account on the mechanism of nutrient release centring on the empirical and mechanistic approaches of predicting nutrient release is given in view of selected mathematical models. Compositions and laboratory preparations of CRFs basing on in situ and graft polymerization are provided alongside the physical methods used in CRFs encapsulation, with an emphasis on the natural polymers, modified clays, and superabsorbent nanocomposite excipients.

Abstract:Bio‐based and smart coating materials applied in CRF technology. Modern society demands transitioning to sustainable agriculture to alleviate environmental effects. Traditional nitrogen fertilizers, like urea, lead to undesirable leaching, runoff losses, and low nutrient use efficiency in crops upon contact with water. Controlled‐release fertilizers (CRFs) present a promising solution by mitigating nutrient loss and enhancing plant uptake. However, concerns arise with synthetic polymer‐coated fertilizers, as they may not degrade in soil and can impact microbial activity. This review focuses on bio‐based coatings for CRFs, summarizing their performance over the past decade in the release properties in water and soil, water retention, biodegradability, and evaluating their efficacy in greenhouse and field trials. Additionally, the review explores innovative strategies for smart coating materials in CRF development, including pH‐sensitive, thermos‐sensitive, enzymatic‐sensitive, and self‐healing technologies. This critical evaluation aims to promote the development of more effective and sustainable fertilizers for agriculture.

Abstract:Fertilizer is an important source of necessary nutrient element for crop growth. Coated fertilizer can not only achieve the slow/controlled release and increase nutrient use efficiency but also enhance the strength of fertilizer particles and reduce transport losses. The coating technology and evaluation methods for slow-controlled release efficiency of slow/controlled release fertilizer were summarized. Furthermore,problems in practical application and corresponding solutions were introduced, which laid the foundation for the research of slow-controlled release efficiency of slow/controlled release fertilizer in the fu-ture.

Abstract:Controlled release fertilizer (CRF) plays a crucial yet necessary part in the sustainable agriculture industry. An alarming rise in call for crop production directly influences the increasing need for synthetically derived fertilizers and pesticides production. The application of CRF has been a gamechanger as an environmentally sustainable pathway to increase crop yields by paving desired phase of plant growth via a direct or indirect mechanism. The mechanism of CRF does not only decreases nutrient dissipation due to volatilization and leaching, but also provides a precisely appropriate nutrient release design that is suitable in the physiological and biochemical aspect of the plant growth. However, CRF is not deployed on larger scale of commercial agriculture practices due to being expensive, has relatively low efficiency in releasing nutrients and its coatings are largely composed of petroleum-based synthetic polymers. Alternatively, there are many polymers derived from renewable and biodegradable sources that can be used as coating material for CRF in the form of bio-nanocomposites. Having said that, there is an apparent gap between the mechanism of the CRFs for promoting plant growth and the prominent role of the nanocomposites especially bio-nanocomposites as coating material for CRF synthesis, thus the importance of nanotechnology application in enhancing the effectiveness of CRF. Therefore, this review attempts to bridge the stated gap and summarizes the comprehensive developments, application mechanisms and future potential of CRF as a fertilizer for crop sustainability.

Abstract:This review describes the latest achievements in the development of encapsulated controlled-release fertilizers, which encompasses sustainability issues in agriculture. The research community's interest in this particular area of science has doubled over the last couple of years due to the yearly increasing complexity of the food and supply situation, as well as maintaining the development of modern society in the era of population outbreak. This review covers demand in timely systematization and comprehensive analysis of emerging research in so-called "smart fertilizers" that release mineral components in accordance with the needs for nutrients classified into controlled- and slow-release fertilizers (CRFs and SRFs). Along with the thoroughly selected fundamental studies published in this area, the review specially focuses on the materials-based classification, emphasizing the importance of the host matrix in the time-controlled release of dopant. This substantially differentiates our review and renders scientific novelty and relevancy to it. The review is divided into sections, dealing with the types of slow- and controlled-release fertilizers each, and supplemented with the critical view on their usage. All data regarding encapsulated fertilizers in this review are systematized for the convenience of the readership when becoming familiarized with the latest achievements in this area. Perspectives and potential pathways are also described to recommend and guide researchers working on the related academic fields.

Abstract:It is important to research the controlled-release mechanisms of nutrients in polymer-coated fertilizers for their exploitation and application.Some models were established on nutrients release in polymer-coated fertilizers according to Fick diffusion theory.There are two different views on the control factors of nutrient release rate: one is that nutrient diffusion rate is the control factors of nutrient release rate,while the other is water vapor permeation rate is the control factors of nutrient release rate.Ideal polymer-coated fertilizers release nutrients by S-shaped curve.The factors affecting the nutrient release of polymer-coated fertilizers include the thickness and water absorption of coating layer,temperature,vapor pressure,soil water content etc.

Abstract:The incorporating use of fertilizers with hydrogels is important practice of enhancing efficiency of fertilizer and soil water, and the frontier in international fertilizer research. In the article, a review was given on method and process of fertilizers combined with hydrogels, interaction of fertilizer nutrients with hydrogels and its research methods, and interactive effects of water and nutrients of hydrogels or slow/controlled release water-storing fertilizers(SRWAFs/CRWAFs) applied to soils, and existing problems and future directions to SRWAFs/ CRWAFs. Hydrogels can be incorporated with fertilizers into slow/controlled release water-storing fertilizers by physical mixing (absorption or granulation), coating and synthesizing, the process of coating and synthesis is advanced technique to prepare SRWAFs/CRWAFs with high nutrient analysis. Fertilizers and salts influence swelling rate and absorption of hydrogels which depend on fertilizers and salt ionic valence. Reports on slow-release effects of hydrogels and SRWAFs/CRWAFs on nutrients are similar, information about the effects of hydrogels on soil water is conflict which is related to application rate of hydrogels and high salts in soils. From now on, emphasis should be made on criterion of nutrient content and absorbency index, innovation of water-absorbent materials and its incorporation process with fertilizers, and the mechanism of wetting and nutrient con-trolled-release of SRWAFs/CRWAFs, and also on research of development of pilot-plant and industrialization technology.

Abstract:Abstract New advances in nanotechnology are driving a wave of technology revolution impacting a broad range of areas in agricultural production. The current work reviews nanopesticides, nano-fabricated fertilizers, and nano activity-based growth promoters reported in the last several years, focusing on mechanisms revealed for preparation and functioning. It appears to us that with many fundamental concepts have been demonstrated over last two decades, new advances in this area continue to expand mainly in three directions, i.e., efficiency improvement, material sustainability and environment-specific stimulation functionalities. It is also evident that environmental and health concerns associated with nano agrochemicals are the primary motivation and focus for most recent work. Challenges and perspectives for future development of nano agrochemicals are also discussed.

Abstract:Nanotechnology-enabled fertilizers and pesticides, especially those capable of releasing plant nutrients or pesticide active ingredients (AIs) in a controlled manner, can effectively enhance crop nutrition and protection while minimizing the environmental impacts of agricultural activities. Herein, we review the fundamentals and recent advances in nanofertilizers and nanopesticides with controlled-release properties, enabled by nanocarriers responsive to environmental and biological stimuli, including pH change, temperature, light, redox conditions, and the presence of enzymes. For pH-responsive nanocarriers, pH change can induce structural changes or degradation of the nanocarriers or cleave the bonding between nutrients/pesticide AIs and the nanocarriers. Similarly, temperature response typically involves structural changes in nanocarriers, and higher temperatures can accelerate the release by diffusion promoting or bond breaking. Photothermal materials enable responses to infrared light, and photolabile moieties (e.g., o-nitrobenzyl and azobenzene) are required for achieving ultraviolet light responses. Redox-responsive nanocarriers contain disulfide bonds or ferric iron, whereas enzyme-responsive nanocarriers typically contain the enzyme’s substrate as a building block. For fabricating nanofertilizers, pH-responsive nanocarriers have been well explored, but only a few studies have reported temperature- and enzyme-responsive nanocarriers. In comparison, there have been more reports on nanopesticides, which are responsive to a range of stimuli, including many with dual- or triple-responsiveness. Nano-enabled controlled-release fertilizers and pesticides show tremendous potential for enhancing the utilization efficiency of nutrients and pesticide AIs. However, to expand their practical applications, future research should focus on optimizing their performance under realistic conditions, lowering costs, and addressing regulatory and public concerns over environmental and safety risks.

Abstract:The demand for food is increasing rapidly with the growth of the global population. To ensure global food security, fertilizers are essential. Controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs) are a highly effective type of fertilizer that have been developed to meet this need. While CRFs offer significant advantages over traditional fertilizers, their use has been limited due to high production costs and negative impact on the environment. CRFs are manufactured and applied without considering the resource-use efficiency of the production process or the potential ecological consequences of fertilizer application. To tackle these issues, biopolymer-based CRFs have been developed. These innovative fertilizers are created by coating granules with biodegradable and eco-friendly biopolymers (chitosan, starch and cellulose). In addition, these groundbreaking fertilizers align with the tenets of the circular economy, which involve formulating products that enable a gradual and steady dispensation of nutrients over an extended period. Our objective in embracing these fertilizers is to transcend the traditional linear "take, make, dispose" approach and transition towards a more sustainable and circular model. This approach not only enhances nutrient delivery efficiency but also contributes significantly to reducing the environmental impact associated with conventional fertilizer use. Afterward, the research explored various aspects of controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs), including the mechanisms of nutrient release, the types of coating materials used, and the techniques employed for coating. The study also examined the benefits and challenges associated with CRFs and analyzed how specific parameters influence the nutrient release mechanisms.
