Abstract:By using the heat kernel characterization of Besov spaces and the contraction mapping principle, the initial problem to the semilinear heat equation u_t-Δu=u|u|~α is studied. The global existence of the solution is proved when the initial value u_0 is in L~(p_0)(R~n) and ‖u_0‖_(B·~(-n(1p_0-1p),∞)_p(R~n)) is sufficently small, where p_0=nα2,pp_0. Under suitable conditions, the uniqueness of the solution is also obtained.

Abstract:Let $u_t = u_{xx} - q(x) u, 0 \leq x \leq 1$, $t>0$, $u(0, t) = 0, u(1, t) = a(t), u(x,0) = 0$, where $a(t)$ is a given function vanishing for $t>T$, $a(t) \not\equiv 0$, $\int^T_0 a(t) dt < \infty$. Suppose one measures the flux $u_x (0,t) := b_0 (t)$ for all $t>0$. Does this information determine $q(x)$ uniquely? Do the measurements of the flux $u_x (1,t) := b(t)$ give more information about $q(x)$ than $b_0 (t)$ does? The above questions are answered in this paper.

Abstract:In this paper we explore the weak solution of a time-dependent inverse source problem and inverse initial problem for $q$-analogue of the heat equation. As an over-determination condition we have used integral type condition on space-variable (in the case of inverse source problem) and final time condition (in the case of inverse initial problem). Series form of considered problems have been obtained via the method of spectral expansions.

Abstract:In this work, we study the unique solvability of the inverse problem that consists of determining a weak solution u ( x , t ) to the nonlinear pseudoparabolic equation with p− Laplacian and damping term and the coefficient f ( t ) of right-hand side, which depends on t . Due to the presence of an unknown coefficient in such problems supposes that there is an additional condition along with the initial and boundary conditions. In the present work, an additional condition is represented by the integral overdetermination condition, which represents the average value of a solution tested with some given function over all the domain. The investigating inverse problem considered in two cases: the coefficient of the damping term γ|u| σ− 2 u is a positive (nonlinear source term) or negative (an absorption). In both cases, we establish the global and local in time existence and uniqueness of a weak solution to the inverse problem under suitable conditions on the exponents p , σ , the dimension d , and the data of the problem.

Abstract:The main aims of this paper are to investigate the existence and uniqueness results for the solution of an inverse source problem for a multidimensional, semilinear, backward parabolic equation, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions, and to propose an iterative difference scheme for the numerical solution of the problem. The unique solvability of the difference scheme is established, as well. In the foundation of the theoretical results, some tools and facts from the operator theory, contraction principle and the Banach fixed-point theorem are applied. Furthermore, a comprehensive numerical analysis and several illuminating visualizations are carried out by employing the iterative difference schemes proposed on some test problems.

Abstract:This paper explores an inverse problem pertaining to the determination of a source function in non‐divergence parabolic equations, where the solution is known at a discrete set of points. Being different from other ordinary inverse source problems, which are often dependent on only one variable, the unknown coefficient in this paper not only depends on the space variable x but also depends on the time t . On the basis of the optimal control framework, the existence of the optimal solution of the control function is proved. The necessary conditions to be satisfied by the optimal solution are given. The convergence of the optimal solution when the mesh parameters tend to zero is obtained. The conjugate gradient method is applied to the inverse problem and some numerical results are presented for various typical test examples.

Abstract:Using uniform global Carleman estimates for discrete elliptic and semi-discrete hyperbolic equations, we study Lipschitz and logarithmic stability for the inverse problem of recovering a potential in a semi-discrete wave equation, discretized by finite differences in a 2-d uniform mesh, from boundary or internal measurements. The discrete stability results, when compared with their continuous counterparts, include new terms depending on the discretization parameter h. From these stability results, we design a numerical method to compute convergent approximations of the continuous potential.

Abstract:The authors of this article study the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions of the initial-boundary value problem for ut=div((|u|σ+d0)|∇u|p(x,t)−2∇u)+f(x,t)(0<σ<2).. They apply the method of parabolic regularization and Galerkin's method to prove the existence of solutions to the mentioned problem and then prove the uniqueness of the weak solution by arguing by contradiction. The authors prove that the solution approaches 0 in L2(Ω) norm as t → ∞.

Abstract:We solve the simultaneous recovery of thermal conductivity and a high-frequency coefficient of a source in a one-dimensional initial-boundary value problem for the heat equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions and an inhomogeneous initial condition from some information on the partial asymptotics of a solution. We show that the coefficients can be restored from some data on the asymptotics of a solution, which is constructed and justified. This article was inspired by Denisov's research on a variety of inverse problems without accounting for high-frequency oscillations. Also, we continue the research by Levenshtam and his students which firstly addressed the inverse problems for parabolic equations with high-frequency coefficients and developed the relevant methodology. In contrast to the previous research of the case that only the source function or its factors are unknown, we assume that the thermal conductivity and the factor of a source function are unknown simultaneously.

Abstract:We consider an inverse problem of determining a coefficient $p(x)$ of an evolution equation $\sigma\ppp_tu = a(x)\ppp_x^2u - p(x)u$ for $0<x<\ell$ and $0<t<T$, where $\sigma \in \C \setminus \{0\}$, $\ell>0$ and $T>0$ are arbitrarily given. Our main result is the uniqueness: by assuming that the zeros of initial value $b(x):= u(0,x)$ on $[0, \ell]$ is a finite set and each zero is of order one at most, if two solutions have the same Cauchy data at $x=0$ over $(0,T)$ and the same initial value $b(x)$, then the coefficient $p(x)$ is uniquely determined on $[0,\ell]$.

Abstract:An inverse problem is considered, which consists in finding a solution and a one-dimensional kernel of the integral term of an inhomogeneous integro-differential equation of hyperbolic type from the conditions that make up the direct problem and some additional condition. First, the direct problem is investigated, while the kernel of the integral term is assumed to be known. By integrating over the characteristics, the given intego-differential equation is reduced to a Volterra integral equation of the second kind and is solved by the method of successive approximations. Further, using additional information about the solution of the direct problem, we obtain an integral equation with respect to the kernel of the integral k(t), of the integral term. Thus, the problem is reduced to solving a system of integral equations of the Volterra type of the second kind. The resulting system is written as an operator equation. To prove the global, unique solvability of this problem, the method of contraction mappings in the space of continuous functions with weighted norms is used. And also the theorem of conditional stability of the solution of the inverse problem is proved, while the method of estimating integrals and Gronoullo’s inequality is used.

Abstract:We study the large time behavior of solutions for the semilinear parabolic equation Δu+Vup−ut=0\Delta u + Vu^{p} - u_{t} =0. Under a general and natural condition on V=V(x)V= V(x) and the initial value u0u_{0}, we show that global positive solutions of the parabolic equation converge pointwise to positive solutions of the corresponding elliptic equation. As a corollary of this, we recapture the global existence results on semilinear elliptic equations obtained by Kenig and Ni and by F.H. Lin and Z. Zhao. Our method depends on newly found global bounds for fundamental solutions of certain linear parabolic equations.

Abstract:We study the inverse source problem for the Helmholtz equation from boundary Cauchy data with multiple wave numbers. The main goal of this paper is to study the uniqueness and increasing stability when the (pseudo)convexity or non-trapping conditions for the related hyperbolic problem are not satisfied. We consider general elliptic equations of the second order and arbitrary observation sites. To show the uniqueness we use the analytic continuation, the Fourier transform with respect to the wave numbers and uniqueness in the lateral Cauchy problem for hyperbolic equations. Numerical examples in 2 spatial dimension support the analysis and indicate the increasing stability for large intervals of the wave numbers, while analytic proofs of the increasing stability are not available.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a global Carleman estimate for stochastic parabolic equations. Based on this estimate, we solve two inverse problems for stochastic parabolic equations. One is concerned with a determination problem of the history of a stochastic heat process through the observation at the final time $T$, for which we obtain a conditional stability estimate. The other is an inverse source problem with observation on the lateral boundary. We derive the uniqueness of the source.

Abstract:We propose and study several inverse boundary problems associated with a quasilinear hyperbolic equation of the form ${c(x)^{-2}}\partial_t^2u=\Delta_g(u+F(x, u))+G(x, u)$ on a compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ with boundary. We show that if $F(x, u)$ is monomial and $G(x, u)$ is analytic in $u$, then $F, G$ and $c$ as well as the associated initial data can be uniquely determined and reconstructed by the corresponding hyperbolic DtN (Dirichlet-to-Neumann) map. Our work leverages the construction of proper Gaussian beam solutions for quasilinear hyperbolic PDEs as well as their intriguing applications in conjunction with light-ray transforms and stationary phase techniques for related inverse problems. The results obtained are also of practical importance in assorted of applications with nonlinear waves.

Abstract:We consider continuation of solutions u to elliptic and parabolic equations limited on hyperplane under some symmetry conditions of the coefficients: for two domains gamma and Gamma on a hyperplane in R-d satisfying gamma subset of subset of Gamma, we prove conditional stability estimates of u vertical bar(Gamma) by u vertical bar(gamma) for an elliptic equation and u vertical bar(Gamma xI) by u vertical bar(gamma x(0,T)) for a parabolic equation with open interval I subset of subset of (0, T). The proof is based on the even extension and conditional stability for Cauchy problems for elliptic and parabolic equations. We apply the result to prove the uniqueness for an inverse source problem for a heat equation of determining a spatial factor on Gamma only by data on gamma. Furthermore we provide characterizations of hyperplanes admitting such continuation. Finally we discuss such continuation for semi-linear elliptic equations.

Abstract:We discuss inverse problems of determining the time-dependent source coefficient for a general class of subelliptic heat equations. We show that a single data at an observation point guarantees the existence of a (smooth) solution pair for the inverse problem. Moreover, additional data at the observation point implies an explicit formula for the time-dependent source coefficient. We also explore an inverse problem with nonlocal additional data, which seems a new approach even in the Laplacian case.

Abstract:This article is devoted to forward and inverse problems associated with time-independent semilinear nonlocal wave equations. We first establish comprehensive well-posedness results for some semilinear nonlocal wave equations. The main challenge is due to the low regularity of the solutions of linear nonlocal wave equations. We then turn to an inverse problem of recovering the nonlinearity of the equation. More precisely, we show that the exterior Dirichlet-to-Neumann map uniquely determines homogeneous nonlinearities of the form $f(x,u)$ under certain growth conditions. On the other hand, we also prove that initial data can be determined by using passive measurements under certain nonlinearity conditions. The main tools used for the inverse problem are the unique continuation principle of the fractional Laplacian and a Runge approximation property. The results hold for any spatial dimension $n\in \N$.

Abstract:In this article the correctness of al inear inverse problem with semi-nonlocal boundary conditions for a three-dimensional equation in a parallelepiped is considered. The equation itself is a fourth order mixed type equation of the second kind. The existence and uniqueness theorems for a generalized solution of the inverse problem in a certain class of integrable functions are~proved using the methods of Fourier, "$\varepsilon $-regularization", a priori estimates, approximating sequences and contracting mappings.
