Abstract:We propose and study several inverse boundary problems associated with a quasilinear hyperbolic equation of the form ${c(x)^{-2}}\partial_t^2u=\Delta_g(u+F(x, u))+G(x, u)$ on a compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ with boundary. We show that if $F(x, u)$ is monomial and $G(x, u)$ is analytic in $u$, then $F, G$ and $c$ as well as the associated initial data can be uniquely determined and reconstructed by the corresponding hyperbolic DtN (Dirichlet-to-Neumann) map. Our work leverages the construction of proper Gaussian beam solutions for quasilinear hyperbolic PDEs as well as their intriguing applications in conjunction with light-ray transforms and stationary phase techniques for related inverse problems. The results obtained are also of practical importance in assorted of applications with nonlinear waves.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the inverse boundary value problem for quasilinear hyperbolic equations. Specifically, the paper studies the unique identifiability and reconstruction problems of multiple unknown parameters of quasilinear hyperbolic equations of the form \(c(x)^{-2}\partial_t^2 u=\Delta_g(u + F(x, u))+G(x, u)\) on compact Riemannian manifolds. The main objective is to uniquely determine and reconstruct the functions \(F\), \(G\) and the coefficient \(c\) as well as the relevant initial data through the corresponding hyperbolic Dirichlet - to - Neumann (DtN) map. ### Main problem description The hyperbolic partial differential equation (PDE) considered in the paper is as follows: \[ \begin{cases} \partial_t^2 u=a(x)\Delta_g(u + F(x, u))+G(x, u)&\text{in }M,\\ u(t, x)=h(t, x)&\text{on }\Sigma:=(0, T)\times\partial M,\\ u(0, x)=\phi(x),\quad\partial_t u(0, x)=\psi(x)&\text{in }M. \end{cases} \] where: - \(a(x)\) is a strictly positive function, - \(F\) and \(G\) are nonlinear terms, - \(h\) is the boundary condition, - \(\phi\) and \(\psi\) are the initial conditions. ### Inverse problem The core of the inverse problem lies in recovering \(a\), \(F\), \(G\) and \(\phi\), \(\psi\) through the known DtN map \(\Lambda_{a, F, G, \phi, \psi}\). That is: \[ \Lambda_{a, F, G, \phi, \psi}\to a, F, G, \phi, \psi. \] ### Main results The main results of the paper include: 1. **Unique identifiability**: Under certain assumptions, it is proved that \(a\), \(F\), \(G\) and \(\phi\), \(\psi\) can be uniquely determined through the DtN map. 2. **Reconstruction formula**: In the case of given certain prior information, formulas for explicitly reconstructing \(F\) and \(G\) are provided. ### Technical methods The paper uses the construction of Gaussian beam solutions and the photon transform technique, combined with the stationary phase method to deal with these inverse problems. Specific steps include: - **Local well - posedness**: First, the local well - posedness of the forward problem is established. - **Successive linearization**: The nonlinear hyperbolic equation is transformed into a series of linear equations by the successive linearization method. - **Gaussian beam solutions**: Gaussian beam solutions distributed along given null geodesics are constructed, and these solutions are used as "probe modes" for the study of inverse problems. ### Application background Quasilinear hyperbolic equations have wide applications in fields such as fluid dynamics, gas dynamics, elasticity, electromagnetism and general relativity. The study of inverse problems is of great significance in fields such as medical imaging, geophysics, non - destructive testing and materials science. Through these techniques and methods, the paper successfully solves the unique identifiability and reconstruction problems of multiple unknown parameters of quasilinear hyperbolic equations, providing a theoretical basis for applications in related fields.
