Abstract:In this paper a competition diffusion system is considered. A sufficient condition of u-niqueness of periodic solution of the system subject to Neumann conditions is given,and the asymp-totic behavior of the solutions of the corresponding initial boundary value problem is obtained.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study the asymptotic behavior of the time-dependent solutions to a coupled system of reaction-diffusion equations with periodic coefficients in unbounded domains, including the whole space R-n, the exterior Omega(e) of a bounded domain and the half-space R-+(n) = {x = (x(1), . . . , x(n)) is an element of R-n; x(n) > 0}, under Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is shown that if the reaction function in the system possesses a mixed quasi monotone property and the corresponding periodic system has a pair of coupled upper and lower solutions then the periodic system has a pair of quasi-solutions and the sector between the quasi-solutions is an attractor of the system of periodic reaction-diffusion equations. Under some additional conditions this attractor leads to the asymptotic stability of a periodic solution for the periodic system. The approach to the problem is based on the method of upper and lower solutions, a ladder argument and a bootstrap technique. Finally, a competitor-competitor-mutualist model is given to illustrate the obtained results.

Abstract:The main goal of this paper is to study the stationary problem for a Lotka–Volterra competition system with advection under homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions . By using global bifurcation theory, we establish the sufficient conditions on terms of the birth rates of two competing species assuring the existence of positive solutions. Moreover, some sufficient conditions for the nonexistence of positive solutions are also given. These contrast with the mathematical analyses carried out by Kuto and Tsujikawa (2015) and Wang and Yan (2015), where the corresponding Neumann problem is analyzed.

Abstract:Motivated by the competition model of two species with nonautonomous diffusion, we consider fully nonautonomous parabolic evolution equation of the form in which the time-dependent family of linear partial differential operator A ( t ), the nonlinear term f ( t , u ), and the external force g is 1-periodic with respect to t . We prove the existence and uniqueness of a periodic solution of the above equation and study the inertial manifold for the solutions nearby that solution. We prove the existence of such an inertial manifold in the cases that the family of linear partial differential operators generates an evolution family satisfying certain dichotomy estimates, and the nonlinear term f ( t , x ) satisfies the -Lipschitz condition, i.e., where belongs to some admissible function space on the whole line. Then, we apply our abstract results to the above-mentioned competition model of two species with nonautonomous diffusion.

Abstract:We study a class of elliptic competition-diffusion systems of long range segregation models for two and more competing species. The existence and uniqueness of the solution are shown. We prove that as the competition rate goes to infinity the solution converges, along with suitable sequences, to a spatially long range segregated state satisfying some free boundary problems.

Abstract:We consider a one-dimensional fractional diffusion equation: partial derivative(alpha)(t) u(x, t) = partial derivative/partial derivative x (p(x) partial derivative u/partial derivative x (x, t)), 0 < x < l, where 0 < alpha < 1 and partial derivative(alpha)(t) denotes the Caputo derivative in time of order alpha. We attach the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition at x = 0, l and the initial value given by the Dirac delta function. We prove that alpha and p(x), 0 < x < l, are uniquely determined by data u(0, t), 0 < t < T. The uniqueness result is a theoretical background in experimentally determining the order alpha of many anomalous diffusion phenomena which are important, for example, in environmental engineering. The proof is based on the eigenfunction expansion of the weak solution to the initial value/boundary value problem and the Gel'fand-Levitan theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we study an intra- and interspecific competition system with the different diffusion rates in an unstirred chemostat. Due to the present of the different diffusion rates, the conservation principle for a classical standard chemostat model does not hold here. Firstly, we prove the existence, the uniqueness and asymptotic behaviors of positive solution of the single population system by using the degree theory. Secondly, by the degree theory and standard bifurcation theory, the existence and global structure of the coexistence solutions are investigated. The results show that when the maximum growth rates of two microorganisms with different diffusion abilities are not small, two competing microorganisms will coexist. Finally, numerical simulations are performed to illustrate that the interspecific interference can help the weaker competitor to win in the competition.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the following Lotka-Volterra competition system with dynamical resources and density-dependent diffusion in a bounded smooth domain [Formula: see text] with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, where the parameters [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) are positive constants, m(x) is the prey's resource, and the dispersal rate function [Formula: see text] satisfies the the following hypothesis: [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] on [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. When m(x) is constant, we show that the system (*) with has a unique global classical solution when the initial datum is in functional space [Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text]. By constructing appropriate Lyapunov functionals and using LaSalle's invariant principle, we further prove that the solution of (*) converges to the co-existence steady state exponentially or competitive exclusion steady state algebraically as time tends to infinity in different parameter regimes. Our results reveal that once the resource w has temporal dynamics, two competitors may coexist in the case of weak competition regardless of their dispersal rates and initial values no matter whether there is explicit dependence in dispersal or not. When the prey's resource is spatially heterogeneous (i.e. m(x) is non-constant), we use numerical simulations to demonstrate that the striking phenomenon "slower diffuser always prevails" (cf. Dockery et al. in J Math Biol 37(1):61-83, 1998; Lou in J Differ Equ 223(2):400-426, 2006) fails to appear if the non-random dispersal strategy is employed by competing species (i.e. either [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text] is non-constant) while it still holds true if both d(w) and [Formula: see text] are constant.

Abstract:This paper examines a system of reaction–diffusion equations arising from a mathematical model of two microbial species competing for two complementary resources with internal storage in an unstirred chemostat. The governing system can be reduced to a limiting system based on two uncoupled conservation principles. One of main technical difficulties in our analysis is the singularities in the reaction terms. Conditions for persistence of one population and coexistence of two competing populations are derived from eigenvalue problems, maximum principle and the theory of monotone dynamical systems.

Abstract:In this paper, existence and uniqueness of periodic solutions of second‐order semilinear impulsive differential equations are obtained. Some sufficient conditions that guarantee the existence of periodic solutions to second‐order linear nonhomogeneous impulsive differential equations are obtained. In addition, by using the appropriate fixed theorem and the theory of coincidence degree, some conditions ensuring the existence and uniqueness of periodic solution to second‐order semilinear impulsive differential systems are derived. Finally, some examples are provided to illustrate the availability of our results.

Abstract:In this paper we study a system of reaction–diffusion equations arising from competition of two microbial populations for a single-limited nutrient with internal storage in an unstirred chemostat. The conservation principle is used to reduce the dimension of the system by eliminating the equation for the nutrient. The reduced system (limiting system) generates a strongly monotone dynamical system in its feasible domain under a partial order. We construct suitable upper, lower solutions to establish the existence of positive steady-state solutions. Given the parameters of the reduced system, we answer the basic questions as to which species survives and which does not in the spatial environment and determine the global behaviors. The primary conclusion is that the survival of species depends on species's intrinsic biological characteristics, the external environment forces and the principal eigenvalues of some scalar partial differential equations. We also lift the dynamics of the limiting system to the full system.

Abstract:Existence and uniqueness of positive radial solution u(p) of the Navier boundary value problem: {Delta(2)u = u(p) in R-N\(B) over bar, u > 0 in R-N\(B) over bar, u = Delta u = 0 on partial derivative B, where B subset of R-N (N >= 5) is the unit ball and p > N-4/N+4, are obtained. Meanwhile, the asymptotic behavior as p -> infinity of u(p) is studied. We also find the conditions such that u(p) is non-degenerate.
