Abstract:In this paper, we consider a subclass of piecewise deterministic Markov processes with a Polish state space that involve a deterministic motion punctuated by random jumps, occurring in a Poisson-like fashion with some state-dependent rate, between which the trajectory is driven by one of the given semiflows. We prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between stationary distributions of such processes and those of the Markov chains given by their post-jump locations. Using this result, we further establish a criterion guaranteeing the existence and uniqueness of the stationary distribution in a particular case, where the post-jump locations result from the action of a random iterated function system with an arbitrary set of transformations.

We establish a new theorem on the pathwise uniqueness of solutions for the equation under a weaker condition than the Lipschitz one. The result concerning the one-parameter analogue of the problem we consider here is immediate (see [1, Theorem 3.2]). Unfortunately, the situation is much more complicated for two-parameter process and we believe that our result is the first one of its kind and is interesting in itself. We have proved the existence theorem for the equation in [2].

Abstract:We consider a nonlocal aggregation equation with degenerate diffusion, which describes the mean-field limit of interacting particles driven by nonlocal interactions and localized repulsion. When the interaction potential is attractive, it is previously known that all steady states must be radially decreasing up to a translation, but uniqueness (for a given mass) within the radial class was open, except for some special interaction potentials. For general attractive potentials, we show that the uniqueness/non-uniqueness criteria are determined by the power of the degenerate diffusion, with the critical power being $m = 2$. In the case $m \ge 2$, we show that for any attractive potential the steady state is unique for a fixed mass. In the case $1 < m < 2$, we construct examples of smooth attractive potentials, such that there are infinitely many radially decreasing steady states of the same mass. For the uniqueness proof, we develop a novel interpolation curve between two radially decreasing densities, and the key step is to show that the interaction energy is convex along this curve for any attractive interaction potential, which is of independent interest.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the non-uniqueness of transport equation on the torus $\mathbb{T}^d$, with density $\rho\in L^{s}_tL_x^{p}$ and divergence-free vector field $\boldsymbol{u}\in L^{s'}_tL_x^{p'}\cap L^{\tilde{s}}_tW_x^{1,\tilde{p}}$. We prove that the non-uniqueness holds for $\frac{1}{p}+\frac{\tilde{s}'}{s\tilde{p}}>1+\frac{1}{d-1}$, with $d\ge 2$ and $s,p,\tilde{p}\in[1,\infty)$, $1\le\tilde{s}<s'$. The result can be extended to the transport-diffusion equation with diffusion operator of order $k$ in the class $\rho\in L^{s}_tL_x^{p}\cap L_t^{\bar{s}}C_x^{\bar{m}}$, $\boldsymbol{u}\in L^{s'}_tL_x^{p'}\cap L^{\tilde{s}}_tW_x^{1,\tilde{p}}$, under some conditions on $\bar{s},\bar{m},k$. In particular, when $\tilde{s}=1$, the additional condition is $\bar{m}<\frac{s}{\bar{s}}-1$, $k<\frac{s}{s'}+1$. These results can be considered as quantitative versions of Cheskidov and Luo's [Ann. PDE, 2021]. The main tool is the convex integration developed by Modena-Sattig-Székelyhidi [Ann. PDE, 2018; Calc. Var. Partial Differ. Equ., 2019; Annales de l'Institut Henri Poincaré C, Analyse non linèaire, 2020] and Cheskidov-Luo [Ann. PDE, 2021; arXiv, 2022 (forthcoming in Anal. PDE, 2023)].

Abstract:The uniqueness of invariant measure is one of the most interesting problems in theory of Markov processes. In this paper, we shall prove that the irreducibility in the sense of fine topology implies the uniqueness of invariant probability measures. It is also proven that this irreducibility is strictly weaker than the strong Feller property plus irreducibility in the sense of original topology, which is the usual uniqueness condition.

Abstract:Stationary distributions of multivariate diffusion processes have recently been proposed as probabilistic models of causal systems in statistics and machine learning. Motivated by these developments, we study stationary multivariate diffusion processes with a sparsely structured drift. Our main result gives a characterization of the conditional independence relations that hold in a stationary distribution. The result draws on a graphical representation of the drift structure and pertains to conditional independence relations that hold generally as a consequence of the drift's sparsity pattern.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the quasi-stationary behavior of the one-dimensional diffusion process with a regular or exit boundary at 0 and an entrance boundary at $\infty$. By using the Doob's $h$-transform, we show that the conditional distribution of the process converges to its unique quasi-stationary distribution exponentially fast in the total variation norm, uniformly with respect to the initial distribution. Moreover, we also use the same method to show that the conditional distribution of the process converges exponentially fast in the $\psi$-norm to the unique quasi-stationary distribution.

Abstract:The random diffusivity, initially proposed to explain Brownian yet non-Gaussian diffusion, has garnered significant attention due to its capacity not only for elucidating the internal physical mechanism of non-Gaussian diffusion, but also for establishing an analytical framework to characterize particle motion in complex environments. In this paper, based on the correlation function C(t1,t2)=〈D(t1)D(t2)〉 of random diffusivity D(t) , we quantitatively propose a general criterion of determining the ergodic property of the Langevin equation with the arbitrary random diffusivity D(t) . Due to the critical role of correlation function C(t1,t2) , we derive the criterion for the two cases with stationary diffusivity or nonstationary diffusivity, respectively. By utilizing the quantitative criterion, we can directly judge the ergodic properties of the random diffusivity model based on the correlation function C(t1,t2) of random diffusivity D(t) . Several typical diffusivities, including the common square of the Brownian motion and of the (fractional) Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, are found to contribute to different ergodic properties, which validates our proposed criterion built on the correlation function C(t1,t2) . https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.109.044115 ©2024 American Physical Society

The stationary distributions of state-dependent diffusions reflected at one and two sides

Abstract:Consider a one-dimensional diffusion process which has state-dependent drift and deviation and is reflected at the origin, which is called a one-side reflected diffusion or simply reflected diffusion. We are particularly interested in the case that its drift and deviation are discontinuous. We define this reflected diffusion as the solution of a stochastic integral equation, and find conditions for its positive recurrence, We then derive its stationary distribution under these conditions. As a related problem, we also consider the case that it is reflected at two sides, which is called a two-sides reflected diffusion. Its existence, positive recurrence and stationary distribution are similarly studied. In the literature, these problems are studied through a state-dependent diffusion on the whole line particularly when the drift and deviation are discontinuous. However, the reflected process itself is not defined in such a study. Thus, the stationary distribution has not been fully studied for a general state-dependent reflected diffusion. We aim to fills this insufficiency and to make the stationary distributions of reflected diffusions widely available in application.

Abstract:With a view to numerical applications we address the following question: given an ergodic Brownian diffusion with a unique invariant distribution, what are the invariant distributions of the duplicated system consisting of two trajectories? We mainly focus on the interesting case where the two trajectories are driven by the same Brownian path. Under this assumption, we first show that uniqueness of the invariant distribution (weak confluence) of the duplicated system is essentially always true in the one-dimensional case. In the multidimensional case, we begin by exhibiting explicit counter-examples. Then, we provide a series of weak confluence criterions (of integral type) and also of a.s. pathwise confluence, depending on the drift and diffusion coefficients through a non-infinitesimal Lyapunov exponent. As examples, we apply our criterions to some non-trivially confluent settings such as classes of gradient systems with non-convex potentials or diffusions where the confluence is generated by the diffusive component. We finally establish that the weak confluence property is connected with an optimal transport problem. As a main application, we apply our results to the optimization of the Richardson-Romberg extrapolation for the numerical approximation of the invariant measure of the initial ergodic Brownian diffusion.

Abstract:We investigate the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions up to an explosion time for regime-switching diffusion processes in an infinite state space. Instead of concrete conditions on coefficients, our existence and uniqueness result is established under the general assumption that the diffusion in every fixed environment has a unique non-explosive strong solution. Moreover, non-explosion conditions for regime-switching diffusion processes are given. The strong Feller property is proved by further assuming that the diffusion in every fixed environment generates a strong Feller semigroup.

Abstract:We consider kinetic SDEs with low regularity coefficients in the setting recently introduced in [6]. For the solutions to such equations, we first prove a Harnack inequality. Using the abstract approach of [5], this inequality then allows us to prove, under a Lyapunov condition, the existence and uniqueness (in a suitable class of measures) of a quasi-stationary distribution in cylindrical domains of the phase space. We finally exhibit two settings in which the Lyapunov condition holds: general kinetic SDEs in domains which are bounded in position, and Langevin processes with a non-conservative force and a suitable growth condition on the force.

A reverse ergodic theorem for inhomogeneous killed Markov chains and application to a new uniqueness result for reflecting diffusions

Abstract:Bass and Pardoux (1987) deduce from the Krein-Rutman theorem a reverse ergodic theorem for a sub-probability transition function, which turns out to be a key tool in proving uniqueness of reflecting Brownian Motion in cones in Kwon and Williams (1991) and Taylor and Williams (1993). By a different approach, we are able to prove an analogous reverse ergodic theorem for a family of inhomogeneous sub-probability transition functions. This allows us to prove existence and uniqueness for a diffusion process with varying, oblique direction of reflection, in a domain with one singular point that can be approximated, near the singular point, by a smooth cone, under natural, easily verifiable geometric conditions.

Abstract:Brownian yet non-Gaussian diffusion has been recently reported in a huge number of biological and soft matter systems. Meanwhile, an archetypal theoretical model called "diffusing diffusivities" is proposed to interpret it. Based on this spirit of diffusing diffusivities, we extend the original diffusing diffusivities (with the unbounded exponential distribution) to the case that the diffusivity is constructed by a bounded stochastic process, i.e., corresponding diffusivities (with certain upper and lower bounds) obeying bounded power-law distribution. We demonstrate that Brownian yet non-Gaussian diffusion can be reproduced by this bounded diffusing diffusivities, via numerical simulations and analytic derivations. Specifically, the short-time distribution of displacement, as the indicator of the Brownian yet non-Gaussian diffusion, is derived analytically by means of superstatistical approach. This short-time distribution is distinct from the Laplace distribution that appears in the original model. The long-time Gaussian displacement distribution is obtained by utilizing the subordination concept. The bounded diffusing diffusivity here may be beneficial to further understanding the diffusive process of particles in complex and inhomogeneous environments. Our work enriches the diffusing diffusivity family and sheds new light on the concept of the Brownian yet non-Gaussian diffusion under stochastic process.

Abstract:Consider the following forest-fire process on a connected graph. Each site of the graph can be either occupied or vacant. A vacant site becomes occupied with rate 1. A site is ignited with rate lambda, and its whole occupied cluster burns instantaneously. The purpose of this paper is to show the existence of a stationary distribution for forest-fire processes on Z^d, for d >= 2. We define a distribution as a limit of a sequence of invariant distributions of finite volume forest-fire processes, and then show it is a stationary distribution for forest-fire processes on Z^d, d>=2.
