Abstract:A conjecture posed by Browkin is discussed. It is proved that if n≥ 2 then G2n3m (■) is subgroup of K_2■ if and only if n = 2, m = 0 and that none of G25(■), G49(■) and G27(■) is a subgroup of K_2■, which confirm the conjecture in some special cases.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:Through determining all the solutions of x(4) + y(4) = i(sigma)omega(0)(mu)z(2) (where sigma = 0, 1, mu = 0, 1 and omega(0) = 1 + i) in Z[i] and of x(4) + y(4) = (-1)(sigma) omega(1)(mu)z(2) (where sigma = 0, 1, mu = 0, 1 and omega(1) = root-2) and x(4) - x(2)y(2) + y(4) = (-1)(sigma) z(2) (sigma = 0, 1) in Z[root-2], we have proved that i) G(2n) (Q(i)) is a subgroup of K-2 (Q(i)) iff n less than or equal to 2, ii) is a subgroup of K-2(Q(root-2)) iff n less than or equal to 2, iii) If n greater than or equal to 2, then G(2n3m) (Q(root-2)) is a subgroup of K-2(Q(root-2)) iff n = 2 and m = 0, which partially confirms a conjecture on K-2 posed by Browkin in [1].

Finite Fields and Their Applications

Abstract:Let X be a smooth projective curve over a finite field F with q elements. For m⩾1, let Xm be the curve X over the finite field Fm, the m-th extension of F. Let Kn(m) be the K-group Kn(Xm) of the smooth projective curve Xm. In this paper, we study the structure of the groups Kn(m). If l is a prime, we establish an analogue of Iwasawa theorem in algebraic number theory for the orders of the l-primary part Kn(lm){l} of Kn(lm). In particular, when X is an elliptic curve E defined over F, our method determines the structure of Kn(E). Our results can be applied to construct an efficient DL system in elliptic cryptography.

Abstract:Let $F = Q\left( {\sqrt p } \right)$, where p = 8t+1 is a prime. In this paper, we prove that a special case of Qin’s conjecture on the possible structure of the 2-primary part of K 2 O F up to 8-rank is a consequence of a conjecture of Cohen and Lagarias on the existence of governing fields. We also characterize the 16-rank of K 2 O F , which is either 0 or 1, in terms of a certain equation between 2-adic Hilbert symbols being satisfied or not.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an elementary abelian $p$-group. We calculate $K_2(\mathbb{Z}[G]/I)$ for certain ideals $I \subseteq \mathbb{Z}[G]$ of the finite $p$-power index through computations of Dennis-Stein symbols. As an application, for $p$ an odd prime, we give a complete description of the relative group $SK_1(\mathbb{Z}[G],p^k\mathbb{Z}[G])$ and obtain more precise lower bounds of the prank of $K_2(\mathbb{Z}[G])$ and $Wh_2(G)$.

Abstract:Let F be a quadratic number field. We give a criterion, via Hilbert symbols, for an element of order two in the tame kernel of F to be a fourth power in the tame kernel of F. The result can be applied to compute the 8-rank of the tame kernel of F and the Tate kernel of an imaginary quadratic number field. We list the 8-ranks of K2OF for all quadratic number fields whose discriminants have exactly two odd prime divisors. In the case when F is an imaginary quadratic number field with the 8-rank of K2OF=0, the Tate kernel of F is given too. An application of our method to the maximal real subfield of a cyclotomic field is discussed. Numerical examples, in particular the examples of quadratic number fields F with 4-rank of K2OF= 8-rank of K2OF=2 illustrate our results.

Abstract:Let F be a cubic cyclic field with exactly one ramified prime p,p>7, or F=Q(d), a real quadratic field with d≢6(mod9). In this paper, we study the 3-primary part of K2OF. If 3 does not divide the class number of F, we get some results about the 9-rank of K2OF. In particular, in the case of a cubic cyclic field F with only one ramified prime p>7, we prove that four conclusions concerning the 3-primary part of K2OF, obtained by J. Browkin by numerical computations for primes p, 7≤p≤5000, are true in general.

Abstract:We provide a direct proof of Seidel representation in the quantum K-theory QK(Gr(k, n)) by studying projected Gromov-Witten varieties concretely. As applications, we give an alternative proof of the K-theoretic quantum Pieri rule by Buch and Mihalcea, reduce certain quantum Schubert structure constants of higher degree to classical Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for K(Gr(k, n)), and provide a quantum Littlewood-Richardson rule for QK(Gr(3, n)).

Abstract:We give a new and self-contained proof for an alternative form of Tunnell’s theorem on congruent numbers. The proof relies on more knowledge on quadratic forms with less calculation than Tunnell’s proof. The approach is based on our observation that the equality $$\#\{(x,y,z,w) \in \mathbb {Z}^4|p=2x^2+3y^2+3z^2+4w^2+2yz\}=\#\{(x,y,z) \in \mathbb {Z}^3|p^2=2x^2+4y^2+9z^2-4yz\}$$ holds for any odd prime p. The same method is applied to the elliptic curves $$E_n:~y^2=x^3+n^2x$$ and $$E_{n}:~~y^2=x(x-n)(x+3n)(E_{-n}:~~y^2=x(x+n)(x-3n))$$ ( $$\pi /3$$ ( $$2\pi /3$$ )-congruent elliptic curves), where we list, without proof, the analogous results. A series of criteria for congruent numbers are given. In particular, for a prime p, we show that if $$p\equiv 1\pmod {8}$$ is a congruent number then the 8-rank of $$K_2O_{\mathbb {Q}(\sqrt{p})}$$ equals one; if $$p\equiv 1\pmod {16}$$ with $$h(-p)\not \equiv h(-2p)\pmod {16}$$ then 2p is not a congruent number; and if $$p\equiv 1, q\equiv 3\pmod {8}$$ are two primes with $$h(-pq)\not \equiv h(-p)\pmod {8}$$ then pq is not a congruent number.

Abstract:Inspired by Kirillov's orbital method, we propose a conjecture (Conjecture 1.7), which suggests an explicit and exhaustive construction of characters for finite pattern groups via coadjoint orbits. First, we establish the construction for irreducible characters of degree q for finite pattern groups. Second, we verify the conjecture for the case of finite pattern groups contained in U 4 ( F q ) , where U n stands for the full unitriangular group of rank n. Finally, we classify irreducible characters for G n ( F q ) , a generalization of Heisenberg group, where G n is the pattern subgroup of U n , associated to the closed set { ( 1 , m ) , ( k , n ) , ( i , n + 1 − i ) | 1 < m , k < n , 1 ⩽ i ⩽ [ n 2 ] } , 3 ⩽ n ∈ N . Hence Conjecture 1.7 and the analogous conjectures of Higman, Lehrer and Isaacs holds for G n ( F q ) .

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Galois action on the extended Bloch groups of biquadratic and dihedral number fields. We prove that if F is a biquadratic number field, then the index Q2(F) in Browkin and Gangl's formulas on the Brauer–Kuroda relation can only be 1 or 2. This is exactly what Browkin and Gangl predicted in their paper. Moreover we give the explicit criteria for Q2(F)=1 or 2 in terms of the Tate kernels. We also prove that Q2(F)=1 or p for any dihedral extension F/Q whose Galois group is the dihedral group of order 2p, where p is an odd prime.
