Abstract:With the support of 11 consecutive NSFC projects,Prof.Zhen Huang in Yanshan University has made great achievements in the domain of mechanisms over the last 30 years due to his devotion to the research and his little care for personal fame and benefits.Under his successful supervision,a batch of mechanism specialists with international fame has emerged from among his students.Prof.Huang was the first person in China to start the research on the mechanisms of parallel manipulators.He has established systematic theories on the analysis and synthesis of the mechanisms of parallel manipulators.In his theory he proposed the modified G-K formulas based on Screw Theory,which solved a problem that had bewildered the domain of mechanisms for more than a hundred years since the time of Chebyshev,Gr(u|¨)bler and Kutzbach.He developed the synthesis theory of lower-mobility parallel mechanisms.In the year 2010, Prof.Huang was presented the Award of Merit by IFToMM,the first Chinese to win this award.He has made significant contributions to the international promotion of mechanisms of China and to the international prestige boasted of by mechanisms of China.
Analysis of Projects Funded in Field of Locomotor System from National Natural Science Foundation of China Young Scientist Fund from the Financial Year 2010 to 2014

Abstract:Objective To summarize the projects funded in the field of locomotor system from National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Young Scientist Funds from 2010 to 2014.Methods The Young Scientist Funds in the field of locomotor medicine from NSFC were statistically analyzed,and the situation of various branches and hot issues were reviewed from 2010 to 2014.Results (1) There were 374 projects with 83.95 million RMB in H06 category funded by NSFC Young Scientists Funding;(2) The sub-categories of the most funded projects were H0605 (the injury and repair of bone,joints and soft tissue,128 projects) and H0609 (the degenerative disease of bone,joints and soft tissue,87 projects);(3) Intervertebral disc degeneration and osteoarthritis were the most involved diseases in the application and approved projects;(4) The top 3 funded affiliations were Shanghai Jiaotong University,Zhejiang University and Second Military Medical University,both in number of projects and total funds;(5) Young investigators supported by Young Scientists Funds were much earlier and easier to obtain Major Research Plans from NSFC.Conclusion The projects supported by Young Scientist Funds grew rapidly in the field of Locomotor Medicine from NSFC.Young Scientist Funds provided great guidance for the young investigators in China,which was very important to promote the development in the field of locomotor system.

Abstract:As one of the most important funding sources in basic science research, the effect of National Natural Science Fund have been paid more and more attention by the public.In this paper, We mainly analyzed the fundings for the principle investigators of China's top ten progress of science supported by National Natural Sci-ence Fund in recent years, and summarized four impor-tant features.This paper showed that the National Natu-ral Science Fund played an important role in supporting the key disciplines, encouraging interdisciplinary com-bination and integration, promoting the formation of new subject, and cultivating outstanding talents.
Achieving High Strength and High Ductility in Nanostructured Metals: Experiment and Modelling

Abstract:Engineering nanostructures in metallic materials such as nanograins and nanotwins can promote plastic performance significantly. Nano/ultrafine-grained metals embedded in coarse grains called bimodal metals and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals have been proved to possess extensively improved yield strength whilst keeping good ductility. This paper will present an experimental study on nanostructured stainless steel prepared by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) with surface impacts of lower strain rate (10 s−1–103 s−1) and higher strain rate (104 s−1–105 s−1). Microstructure transition has been observed from the original γ-austenite coarse grains to α′-martensite nanograins with bimodal grain size distribution for lower strain rates to nanotwins in the ultrafine/coarse grained austenite phase for higher strain rates. Meanwhile, we will further address the mechanism-based plastic models to describe the yield strength, strain hardening and ductility in nanostructured metals with bimodal grain size distribution and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals. The proposed theoretical models can comprehensively describe the plastic deformation in these two kinds of nanostructured metals and excellent agreement is achieved between the numerical and experimental results. These models can be utilized to optimize the strength and ductility in nanostructured metals by controlling the size and distribution of nanostructures.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) plays an important role in supporting scientific research. And numerous scientists and researchers are concerned about the applications and funding.METHODS: Annual reports of 2014-2018 were searched respectively from the NSFC official website. Further analysis was made to discover the regularity and trend of projects funded by NSFC.RESULTS: The funding by NSFC continuously increased rapidly since its establishment. Recently, the annual amount, which is still on the rise, has reached more than 20 billion CNY. From the year 2014 to 2018 multifarious projects types were set up by NSFC to support scientific research of different level and multiple dimensions.CONCLUSIONS: In the past years, NSFC had provides strong support to basic scientific research in all fronts and provided a mechanism for fair competition.

Abstract:This paper statistically analyzes the academic research development of mechanical engineering discipline by numerically counting the application, the financial support and concluding for the automotive-related projects by the National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC) to transform the automotive industry in China from a big one to a powerful one in the world. The results show that basic theoretical researches in automotive engineering were strengthened, and some key techniques gained breakthrough under the support of NSFC as the rapid development of automotive industry in China. However, the application scale is still small with low funding rate for fundamental program. Influential and remarkable results are not abundant, and the original innovations are inadequate. Therefore, the authors suggest that people need pay more attention on mining scientific issues in automotive engineering, enhancing basic research, and accelerating the output and the transformation of research results to develop healthily and harmonically for the automotive industry in China.

Abstract:The paper has made a textual analysis on the funding and management of general projects by selecting the reports of all previous all-member committees of the Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC) as the analytical objects.The analytical results show that(1)the aid positioning of the general projects of the scientific funding attaches importance to consecutiveness,the funding intensity rises gradually and the absolute funding rate tends to be decreased.(2)Stress is laid on the IT-aided projects;more attentions are paid to the peer review fairness of the projects,tending to be normalized and elaborated.(3)The committee of NSFC has always stressed strategic planning and has been concerned about the adjustment of the internal structure;the institution and policy systems are complete step by step and the substantial measures of supervision and accountability are also intensified gradually.

Abstract:Based on the data of 2006-2015 National Natural Science Foundation Department of Management Sciences projects,this study makes comparisons about management science project funding and its time trends during the national "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" and "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period,in terms of funding category,structure of research team,supporting institutions and research field.The result presents some special characters as follows:the number of projects shows a steady growth,and the amounts and intensity of funding keep improving;the growth of both Regional Science Fund Projects and Young Scientists Fund Projects takes the head;project leaders become younger in average age,with higher degrees and lower title;most supporting constitutions are colleges and universities,especially 985 Project ones;projects of Health Management and Policy,Resources and Environment Policy and Management as well as Macroeconomic Management and Strategic areas increase significantly;research hotspots continue expanding,while have some changes in a stable trend.

Abstract:Objective To enhance the fund efficiency of dental research programs supported by National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC) and to reveal the achievements and progresses of the funds.Methods The data of programs in dental and craniofacial field supported by NSFC from 1999 to 2006 and completed between 2003 and 2009 were collected based on the final reports by the investigators.The data of personnel training,research publication,patent,awards,and academic communication at domestic and international levels were all collected and analysed. Results There were 307 grants in total,including 185 general programs,73 Young Scientists Funds,13 regional funds,3 Key Programs,1 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and 32 others.An average of 4 postgraduate students was trained by each program.In general,the outcomes of general programs were better than those of Young Scientists Fund,and the latter was better than regional fund.There was steady increase each year in the amount of papers published in SCI journals,and about half of the investigators published SCI papers.In addition,9 patents were registered and 13 prizes were won, and the investigators participated 610 domestic and international exchanges.Conclusions The continuously increase of NSFC support in dental field has led to substantial achievement,although patent application,the quality of papers and novel ideas need to be improved.
Analysis of major programs in the field of health science funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China between the years 2010 and 2018

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) plays an important role in supporting scientific research. The Major Program is one of the most important types as it improves the capability of indigenous innovation in China's basic research efforts. Thus, numerous scientists and researchers are concerned about its application and funding aspects.METHODS: The information and data of the Major Program were collected from guide books and annual reports released between the years 2010 to 2018 via the NSFC official website. We conducted further analysis to discover any regularities and tendencies.RESULTS: From 2010 to 2018, a total of 21 areas in the field of health science were funded by the NSFC and eventually 87 projects were approved, totaling 32.8 million CNY. The applicants funded were from 43 host institutions, 70 were males and 17 were females, and the applicants were aged between of 35 and 77 years. Of all the applicants funded, 86 had senior title while only 1 had deputy senior title. The collaboration of institutions was common in the applications.CONCLUSIONS: Several characteristics of the Major Program could be found based on the analysis, which may be beneficial for the applicants in the future.

Abstract:Motor systems represent significant energy power equipment for bolstering national economic development and defense construction,as well as the core infrastructure of equipment.In the context of China's " Global Manufacturing Power" strategy,improvements regarding motor system efficiency,reliability and adaptability are crucial to the promotion of core competitiveness in the equipment manufacturing industry.In response to the national strategy concerning high-end equipment,"973" program entitled " Baisc Research on Reliable Operation and Intelligent Control for High-Efficiency and High Performance Motor Systems",centered on three critical points:integrated motor system design methods and high-efficiency operation theories,characteristics and rules of faults and reliable operation mechanisms,and feature interaction mechanism and intelligence control under extreme conditions.The program has achieved various research outcomes of worldwide significance.This paper presents an analysis of this program with respect to its overview,symbolic advancements and practical benefits,in addition to a prospectus of the follow-up research.

Abstract:Nano-, bio-, and information-science and technology constitute the most important and influential three research fields in the beginning of 21st century. In the nanometer scale, the above three fields are closely related to each other; and the cooperation among scientists of physics, chemistry, mechanics, materials science, biology, and microelectronics has become more necessary than ever before. Initiated and supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Symposium of Young Scientists on Physical Mechanics and Multidisciplinary Problems in Nanotechnology was held in Beijing during October 18-20, 2002. This article reviews the background and motivation of this symposium, gives the main contents of the 31 invited lectures, and summarizes the comments and suggestions of the participants on issues such as the multidisciplinary cooperation.
