Abstract:A fluorescent probe, PyCalix, which has two pyrene moieties at the lower rim of a calix[4]arene fixed in the cone conformation was synthesized and its complexation behavior with alkali and alkaline earth cations was studied by fluorescence spectrometry. The compound showed intramolecular excimer emission at approximately 480 nm in the fluorescence spectra. Upon complexation with alkaline earth metal cations, a decrease of excimer emission was observed. The decrease of excimer emission was accompanied by an increase of monomer emission of pyrenes at 397 nm. The order of complexation constants of PyCalix with metal ions was Sr(+ approximately Ca2+ > Ba2+ > Mg2+ > K+ > Na+ > Cs+ for all reagents. PyCalix doped polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane was fabricated and our results showed that this membrane can be used for selective detection of Sr2+.

Abstract:Two redox anion receptors based on calix[4]pyrrole and ferrocene have been synthesized. The electrochemical investigation revealed that these compounds can be response to the anions with different shifts of Fc/Fc+ couple. With the 1H NMR titration study, the selectivity to F− and AcO− ions in CD3CN solution was confirmed. The conformations of the mono-aromatic meso-substituted calix[4]pyrroles, which were the synthetical intermediate of the ferrocene based receptors, and their anion complexes in the solid state have also been studied by single X-ray crystallography, and the rationality of the crystal conformations was proved by theoretical study.

Abstract:Novel calix[4]arene-based anion receptors 1–3 with bis-squaramide moieties were designed and synthesized. Their sensing properties with various anions were investigated by UV–vis, ESI-MS, and 1H NMR spectra. The experimental results revealed that there were two types of interaction modes where receptor 1 bound biologically important H2PO4−, F−, and AcO− ions selectively over other anions in the hydrogen bonding interaction mode, while receptors 2 and 3 displayed deprotonation behavior with basic anions (F−, AcO−, and H2PO4−) via acid–base interaction mode. Receptors 2 and 3 were proved to be efficient ‘naked-eye’ sensors for F− and AcO− with marked color changes.

Abstract:Calix[4]arenes bearing urea units in the meta position(s) of the upper rim of the macrocyclic skeleton were prepared by the reaction of the corresponding amines with aryl isocyanates. As shown by the 1H NMR and UV/vis titration experiments, these systems are capable of effectively complexing selected anions even in a highly competitive environment (such as DMSO-d6). While the monoureido derivatives showed approximately the same complexation ability irrespective of the substitution (para vs meta isomers), the bisureas at the upper rim demonstrated interesting differences in the complexation. The meta,meta and para,para isomers were shown to prefer 2:1 complexes (regardless of the anion tested), while the analogous meta,para isomer formed 1:1 complexes with strongly coordinated anions (e.g. H2PO4-) based on synchronous complexation from both ureido groups. This suggests that the regioselective introduction of urea units into the upper rim of calix[4]arene brings with it the possibility of "tuning" the complexation properties depending on the substitution pattern of the functional groups.

Abstract:The solution binding properties of calix[4]pyrroles with anion (added as tetraalkylammonium salts) were investigated using UV-vis spectroscopic techniques. The obvious red-shift of absorption maximum band of calix[4]pyrrole in EtOH in the presence of the tetramethylammonium (TMA(+)) or tetraethylammonium (TEA(+)) salts were observed. These results displayed in electronic absorption spectra indicated calix[4]pyrrole receptors linking anionic species through multiple hydrogen bonding interactions are capable of using the periphery electron-rich "walls" for selectively binding electron-deficient tetraalkylammonium cation subunits by cation-pi charge-transfer interaction. It was seen that the stability of the calix[4]pyrrole-anion complex depends strongly on the cation. The meso-alkyl groups of the calix[4]pyrrole, the affinity for the anion subunits and the structure of tetraalkylammonium cations have considerable effects on the formation of cation-pi charge-transfer interaction.

Abstract:A new ditopic ion-pair receptor 1 was designed, synthesized, and characterized. Detailed binding studies served to confirm that this receptor binds fluoride and chloride ions (studied as their tetraalkylammonium salts) and forms stable 1:1 complexes in CDCl(3). Treatment of the halide-ion complexes of 1 with Group I and II metal ions (Li(+), Na(+), K(+), Cs(+), Mg(2+), and Ca(2+); studied as their perchlorate salts in CD(3)CN) revealed unique interactions that were found to depend on both the choice of the added cation and the precomplexed anion. In the case of the fluoride complex [1⋅F](-) (preformed as the tetrabutylammonium (TBA(+)) complex), little evidence of interaction with the K(+) ion was seen. In contrast, when this same complex (i.e., [1⋅F](-) as the TBA(+) salt) was treated with the Li(+) or Na(+) ions, complete decomplexation of the receptor-bound fluoride ion was observed. In sharp contrast to what was seen with Li(+), Na(+), and K(+), treating complex [1⋅F](-) with the Cs(+) ion gave rise to a stable, receptor-bound ion-pair complex [Cs⋅1⋅F] that contains the Cs(+) ion complexed within the cup-like cavity of the calix[4]pyrrole, which in turn was stabilized in its cone conformation. Different complexation behavior was observed in the case of the chloride complex [1⋅Cl](-). In this case, no appreciable interaction was observed with Na(+) or K(+). In addition, treating [1⋅Cl](-) with Li(+) produces a tightly hydrated dimeric ion-pair complex [1⋅LiCl(H(2)O)](2) in which two Li(+) ions are bound to the crown moiety of the two receptors. In analogy to what was seen in the case of [1⋅F](-), exposure of [1⋅Cl](-) to the Cs(+) ion gives rise to an ion-pair complex [Cs⋅1⋅Cl] in which the cation is bound within the cup of the calix[4]pyrrole. Different complexation modes were also observed when the binding of the fluoride ion was studied by using the tetramethylammonium and tetraethylammonium salts.

Abstract:Anion-binding chemistry has emerged in recent years as one of the most intensely explored areas of supramolecular chemistry. The binding of different halide anions to four strapped calix[4] pyrroles was studied by means of molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics simulations methods. The results indicate that the anion binding ability of calix [4] pyrrole-type systems could be effectively tuned by modifying the length and nature of the bridging straps. In this process, it was the most stable conformation upon anion binding due to the formation of four NH-halide hydrogen bond, simultaneity, the difference of cavity by modifying straps adapted themselves to different halide anion.

Abstract:Three diastereomeric bis-phosphonate cavitands based on an aryl extended calix[4]pyrrole can act as ion-pair receptors for alkylammonium/phosphonium chloride salts. In this contribution, the ion-pair binding mode and binding affinity were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and new nonconvalent weak interaction analysis method. One of the three receptors was chosen as the host and two guests were chosen to model quaternary phosphonium chloride salts and primary ammonium chloride salts respectively, and two types of arrangements - separated and contact - were taken into account for each guest. The binding energy suggests that contact arrangement is the favorable binding mode for this receptor and it prefers to bind primary ammonium chloride salts rather than quaternary phosphonium chloride salts both in the gas-phase and in solution, in agreement with the experiment. Moreover, geometry analysis and charge transfer based on natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis suggest that the binding modes and binding affinities of the receptor towards different ion-pairs are determined by the amount and strength of hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, nonconvalent weak interactions between the host and the guests have been explored to unravel the driving forces responsible for the ion-pair recognition. There are hydrogen bonding, van der Waals, cation-pi, ion-induced dipole and charge-charge interactions in ion-pair recognition, and hydrogen bonding interactions play the dominant role in this process. This work unveils the mechanism of ion-pair recognition by new calix[4]pyrrole bisphosphonate receptors, while opening exciting perspectives for the design of novel calix[4]pyrrole-based ion-pair receptors.

Abstract:Because they hold together molecules by means of non-covalent interactions - relatively weak and thus, potentially reversible - the anionic calixarenes have become an interesting tool for efficiently binding a large range of ligands - from gases to large organic molecules. Being highly water soluble and conveniently biocompatible, they showed growing interest for many interdisciplinary fields, particularly in biology and medicine. Thanks to their intrinsic conical shape, they provide suitable platforms, from vesicles to bilayers. This is a valuable characteristic, as so they mimic the biologically functional architectures. The anionic calixarenes propose efficient alternatives for overcoming the limitations linked to drug delivery and bioavailability, as well as drug resistance along with limiting the undesirable side effects. Moreover, the dynamic non-covalent binding with the drugs enables predictable and on demand drug release, controlled by the stimuli present in the targeted environment. This particular feature instigated the use of these versatile, stimuli-responsive compounds for sensing biomarkers of diverse pathologies. The present review describes the recent achievements of the anionic calixarenes in the field of life science, from drug carriers to biomedical engineering, with a particular outlook on their applications for the diagnosis and treatment of different pathologies.

Abstract:Calixarenes are highly versatile scaffolds for the design of 3-D cavities, and have been regarded as the third generation of host molecules after crown ethers and cyclodextrins in supermolecular chemistry, which can selectively form complexes with guest molecules or ions. Recently, calixarenes containing polymers have attracted much attention. Due to the good stability and machinability of polymer materials, calixarenes containing polymers are expected to be developed as novel functional materials, which have been widely studied in ion selective electrodes and membranes I chemical and biochemical sensors and selective extraction of ions and neutral molecules. Based on the chain structures, there are three kinds of calixarenes containing polymers: calixarene in polymer backbone, calixarene as polymer side group and star polymer with a calixarene core. In this paper, the recent progress on the synthesis and application of these calixarenes containing polymers is reviewed.

Abstract:A new family of aryl-extended calix[4]pyrroles with two phoshonate groups can act as ion-pair receptors for guest alkylammonium/phosphonium chloride salts, and the ion-pair binding mode and binding affinity of these hosts are different. In the present contribution, the origin of opposite ion-pair binding behavior for two typical hosts ii and oo towards primary ammonium chloride salt and quaternary phosphonium chloride salt was investigated using quantum mechanics (QM) calculations and a new noncovalent weak interaction analysis method. Two types of arrangements - separated and contact - were taken into account for each complex. The binding energy suggests that contact and separated arrangements are the favorable binding modes for receptor ii and oo respectively. Furthermore, the primary alkylammonium chloride salt binds stronger to ii than to oo, while the quaternary phosphonium chloride salt binds stronger to oo than to ii, in agreement with the experiment. Moreover, geometry, charge transfer based on natural bond orbital (NBO) and noncovalent weak interactions analysis suggest that the hydrogen bonding and cation-pi interactions play a critical role in ion-pair recognition of ii and oo respectively due to the different orientation of the P=O groups. This work further unveils the mechanism of ion-pair recognition by new calix[4]pyrrole bis-phosphonate receptors, while opening exciting perspectives for the design of stronger and more efficient calix[4]pyrrole-based ion-pair receptors.

Abstract:A series of novel double-armed calix[4]arene derivatives, i.e. 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl -25,27-bis[2-[(2-hydroxy-5-(4-nitroazo)benzylidene)amino]ethoxy]-26,28-dihydroxy-calix[4]-arene (4), 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25,27-bis[2-[(2-hydroxy-5-(2-nitroazo)benzylidene) amino]ethoxy]-26,28-dihydroxycalix[4]arene (5), 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25,27-bis[2-[(2-hydroxy-5-(4-chloroazo)benzylidene)amino]ethoxy]-26,28-dihydroxycalix[4]arene (6), have been synthesized as an selective chromoionophore for Na+. The complexation behavior of ligands 4-6 with alkali metal ions Na+, K+, Rb+and Cs+ has been evaluated by using UV–Vis spectrometry in CH3CN–H2O (99:1/V:V) solution at 25°C. The UV–Vis spectra show that the complexation of 4-6 with Na+exhibits obvious bathochromic shifts (λmax 379→480 nm) and there is a unique color change in the solution from yellow to red upon complexation. The binding constants for Na+ are higher than that of other alkali metal ions, giving the highest cation selectivity up to 7 for Na+/K+. The binding ability and photophysical behavior of alkali cations by calix[4]arene derivatives 4-6 are discussed from the point of view of substituted effects at the lower rim of parent calix[4]arene and size-fit concept between host calix[4]arenes and guest cations.

Abstract:Calixarenes are "chalice like" phenol-based macrocycles that are one of the most fascinating studied scaffolds in supramolecular chemistry. Their preorganized nonpolar cavities and ion binding sites, and their well-defined conformations all lay important foundations for forming host–guest complexes. Conjugation of calixarene scaffolds with various fluorophores at either upper or lower rims has led to the development of smart fluorescent probes for inorganic molecules or ions, aliphatic or aromatic compounds, biomolecules, temperature and hypoxia, even multi-component traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Moreover, significant advancements have been made for biological applications. This review critically summarizes the recent advances made in these areas.

Abstract:A series of novel N-tert-butyl sulfinyl squaramide receptors have been designed and synthesized. Their interactions with a range of inorganic anions were studied in solution by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. This new type of squaramide displayed better anion-binding abilities over conventional diphenyl squaramides. The single crystal analysis and DFT calulations implied the role of the tert-butyl C-H protons in binding C1(-). The energies of C-H center dot center dot center dot C1(-) interactions were estimated to be 1.4-1.6 kcal/mol in solution.

Abstract:A new calix[4]pyrrole type anion receptor (1) containing two anti-symmetrically meso-situated acenaphthenequinone moieties has been constructed by a “one-pot” facile synthesis. The crystal structures of 1 and 1·F− complex were characterized by X-ray crystallography. The crystal of 1·F− complex witnessed that a CH group from the acenaphthenequinone participated in anion binding through CH…F hydrogen bond which was also conformed in solution by 1H NMR titration in CD2Cl2. The anion binding property of 1 was studied in CH2Cl2 using UV–vis spectrometry and the results reflected that it bound selectively with F− and Cl− ions.
