Abstract:Supercritical fluids have the unique characteristic of density-tuned physicochemical properties that can affect reaction rates and selectivities. We have studied homogeneously catalyzed styrene hydroformylation in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) and have shown that the reaction rate and the regioselectivity can be varied by changes in pressure at constant temperature. This rate and selectivity change is explained in terms of the transition state theory. We have determined the partial molar volumes of the reaction products based on the Peng-Robinson equation of state for an infinite-dilution solution model, a real solution model, and a real solution model with regressed interaction coefficients. Then, the estimated partial molar volumes were used to predict the experimentally observed selectivity behavior. Through these simulations, an understanding of the reaction rate and selectivity control by adjustment of the pressure was developed.

Abstract:Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) has been widely used as an environmentally friendly solvent to replace the conventional organic solvent in green chemical processes.Among those applications reported,the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides in supercritical CO2 has received a great interest.This review covered the recent progress in the synthesis of cyclic carbonates under supercritical carbon dioxide,with an emphasis on the state of the art of different kinds of catalysts employed in this reaction,including metal complex,quaternary onium salts,binary catalytic systems,ionic liquids,metal oxide,organocatalysts,et al.Furthermore,the advantages of supercritical carbon dioxide both as solvent and as reactant for this transformation were highlighted.From the economic and environmental point of view,organic catalysts,such as ionic liquids and quatemary onium salts,show promising potential application in the future development of chemical industry.It was also pointed out that the design and preparation of efficient and green catalysts are critical to this research field.

Abstract:This paper studies t he lipase catalyzed esterification of lauric acid and n butanol in supercritic al carbon dioxide. The method is the same as described in “Journal of Tsinghua Un iversity” (Qinghua Daxeu Xuebao), vol.39, No.6, pp31￣34, 1999, by CHEN Huiqing, YANG Jichu. The effect of pressure, temperature, water content of the enzym e, concentration and type of the substrates on the reaction are evaluated. Incre asing the pressure will make the hydration extend of the enzyme decrease, along with the decrease of the activity. However, the solubility of all substrates inc rease when turning the pressure from 8MPa to 20MPa, a higher reactio n rate thus is induced. In the range of 34℃￣60℃, increase of the t emperature will cause a tendency of higher reaction rate. The water contents of the enzyme h ave a great impact on the reaction. The activity of the enzyme reaches its peak at the water mass fraction of 40%. If the concentration of n butanol is greater than 100mmol/L, an obivous inhibition on the enzyme is observed. During e a ch experiment, lauric acid did not inhibit the reaction. The initial ra te increases with the extending of carbon chain in alcohol molecule. When the nu mber of carbon atom is more than 4, the reaction rate lowers down.

Abstract:Homogeneous catalysts offer many advantages, including high activity and selectivity, while they generally present problems at the separation stage of a process, both in product purification and in catalyst recovery. Biphasic systems can provide one way to deal with these problems. The biphasic catalysis systems using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) as the continuous phase and another green reaction medium, such as water, ionic liquid, polyethylene glycol, respectively, as the stationary catalyst phase are described herein for the metal-mediated chemical reactions. An important advantage of adopting scCO(2) with those biphasic systems from an engineering point of view was the possibility to combine reaction and separation into only one integrated process, namely the so-called homogeneously reacted while heterogeneously separated process. Recent progress in this field is reviewed in this paper.

Abstract:Nanospaces within enzymes play a crucial role in chemical reactions in biological systems, garnering significant attention from supramolecular chemists. Inspired by the highly efficient catalysis of enzymes, artificial supramolecular hosts have been developed and widely employed in various reactions, paving the way for innovative and selective catalytic processes and offering new insights into enzymatic catalytic mechanisms. In supramolecular macrocycle systems, weak non-covalent interactions are exploited to enhance substrate solubility, increase local concentration, and stabilize the transition state, ultimately accelerating reaction rates and improving product selectivity. In this review, we will focus on the opportunities and challenges associated with the catalysis of chemical reactions by supramolecular macrocycles in the aqueous phase. Key issues to be discussed include limitations in molecular interaction efficiency in aqueous media, product inhibition, and the incompatibility of catalysts or conditions in "one-pot" reactions.

Abstract:In this work, supercritical carbon dioxide was used as reaction media in the lipase-mediated epoxidation of alkenes for the first time. Under the optimal conditions (alkene (1 mmol), novozym 435 (15 mg), H2O2 (50% aqueous solution, 1.4 mmol), n-caprylic acid (0.05 mmol), 40°C, scCO2 (10 MPa, 25 mL)), high yields (83–98%) of epoxidation of alkenes could be obtained in a short reaction time. Furthermore, novozym 435 exhibited a satisfactory reusability in the epoxidations. Thus, this work not only presents a green and mild method of lipase-mediated epoxidation with higher yield and reaction rate than other lipase-mediated routes ever reported but also expands the application of supercritical carbon dioxide in enzyme catalytic promiscuity.

Abstract:The research progress on several asymmetric synthesis in supercritical carbon dioxide was presented in this paper,which included hydroformylation,hydrogenation of C-C double bonds and imines,diels-alder reactions,alkylation,mukaiyama reactions and enzymic catalytic reactions.The asymmetric synthesis in mixed medium consisting of the ionic liquid and supercritical carbon dioxide were also introduced.The basic problems both in theory and in experiments in this field to be studied were proposed.

Abstract:With the rapid development of modern industry, coal, petroleum, natural gas and other fossil fuels have been excessively consumed, along with an increasing large quantities of greenhouse gases (e.g. carbon dioxide, CO2) are produced. It is urgent to develop sustainable green energy and abate the detriment of carbon dioxide on global environment. CO2 is a cheap carbon source that can be converted into high value-added chemicals by chemical, photochemical, electrochemical or enzymatic methods to realize the recycling of CO2. It is a win-win strategy to solve the energy and environmental crisis caused by global carbon emissions. Inspired by natural CO2 metabolic process, enzymatic transformation provides an alternative strategy for efficient recycling of CO2. Compared with traditional chemical, photochemical or electrochemical methods, the enzymatic mute holds advantages of green, high efficiency, mild and excellent selectivity, which is expected to bring new revolutionary opportunities for efficient utilization of CO2. Thus, in this present review, we firstly introduce the brief background about enzymatic conversion for CO2 capture, sequestration and utilization. Next, we depict six major routes of the CO2 metabolic process in cells, which are taken as the inspiration source for the construction of enzymatic systems in vitro. Subsequently, recent advances in enzymatic conversion of CO2 that catalyzed by various single enzymes and multi-enzyme cascade systems are systematically reviewed. Some emerging approaches for construction of immobilized single- or multi-enzyme systems, directed evolution and artificial modification of enzymes, and cofactor regulation during the enzymatic processes are also discussed. Finally, the defects and shortcomings of enzymatic approaches are summarized, and the future perspectives are finally put forward. Based on this present review, we aim to provide theoretical reference and practical basis for more efficient enzymatic utilization of CO2 to produce high value-added chemicals.

Abstract:Supercritical carbon dioxide is the most extensively studied supercritical fluid (SCF) medium for polymerization reactions and organic transformations. This can be attributed to a list of advantages ranging from solvent properties to practical environmental as well as economic considerations. In addition, when CO 2 is used for the synthesis and processing of porous materials additional advantages are also realized. The subject of this review will be the synthesis of porous materials and in particular emulsion-templated polymers. The development of inexpensive hydrocarbon surfactants will also be discussed.
Unveiling the hidden reaction kinetic network of carbon dioxide in supercritical aqueous solutions

Abstract:Dissolution of CO$_2$ in water followed by the subsequent hydrolysis reactions is of great importance to the global carbon cycle, and carbon capture and storage. Despite enormous previous studies, the reactions are still not fully understood at the atomistic scale. Here, we combined ab initio molecular dynamics simulations with Markov state models to elucidate the reaction mechanisms and kinetics of CO$_2$ in supercritical water both in the bulk and nanoconfined states. The integration of unsupervised learning with first-principles data allows us to identify complex reaction coordinates and pathways automatically instead of a priori human speculation. Interestingly, our unbiased modelling found a novel pathway of dissolving CO$_2$(aq) under graphene nanoconfinement, involving the pyrocarbonate anion (C$_2$O$_5^{2-}$(aq)) as an intermediate state. The pyrocarbonate anion was previously hypothesized to have a fleeting existence in water; however our study reveals that it is a crucial reaction intermediate and stable carbon species in the nanoconfined solutions. We even observed the formation of pyrocarbonic acid (H$_2$C$_2$O$_5$(aq)), which was unknown in water. The unexpected appearance of pyrocarbonates is related to the superionic behavior of the confined solutions. We also found that carbonation reactions involve collective proton transfer along transient water wires, which exhibits concerted behavior in the bulk solution but proceeds stepwise under nanoconfinement. Our study highlights the importance of large oxocarbons in aqueous carbon reactions, with great implications for the deep carbon cycle and the sequestration of CO$_2$.

Kinetic study on the one-pot synthesis of dimethyl carbonate in supercritical CO2 conditions

Abstract:The kinetics of one-pot synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) was investigated using ethylene epoxide (EO), methanol, and CO2 as raw materials and a mixture of KI and K2CO3 as a catalyst under supercritical CO2 conditions. The reaction pathway of the one-pot process is that EO first reacts with CO2 to form ethylene carbonate (EC) and then EC reacts with methanol to produce DMC and ethylene glycol (EG). EC formation is a relatively fast reaction, whereas the transesterification of EC with methanol to form DMC is a relatively slow reaction and the rate-control step of the one-pot synthesis. 2-Methoxyethanol (ME), which is the exclusive byproduct, is predominantly formed by the reaction of EC with methanol. An isothermal kinetics model and an isobaric kinetics model for the one-pot synthesis of DMC were developed. The relative standard deviations of the models from the experiment data were less than ±15% and ±10%, respectively. The effects of temperature and CO2 density on the reaction rates and selectivity were discussed.

Abstract:Due to the fascinating properties of low viscosity, zero surface tension, high gas-like diffusivity and high liquid-like density, as well as the characteristics of nontoxic, nonflammable and noncorrosive, supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) has been widely used in green, sustainable and effective technologies, especially in the field of chemical engineering for chemical synthesis and transformation. SCCO2-based technologies have attracted the increasing attention of researchers, but the high sensitivity of SCCO2 to the change of parameters during the chemical reaction process limits the practical applications of SCCO2-based technologies. The key to transferring these technologies into practical applications is the reasonable design and construction of SCCO2-applied equipments, and different SCCO2-based applications usually require to be implemented with specific equipment. Herein, different from most of the reviews that focused on SCCO2 application itself, this review takes a unique perspective of systematically and comprehensively summarizing the current researches about various SCCO2-applied equipments, including their design principles, components constitution, operation mechanisms and applied fields, according to different applications in the field of chemical engineering for chemical synthesis and transformation, and analyzed the commonalities and specificities among the equipments. Furtherly, forward directions to explore and commercialization challenges to overcome are proposed for more in-depth and extensive development of SCCO2-applied equipments. This review aims to provide the thoughts for the target design of SCCO2-applied equipments, and offer the technical guidance for their optimization and improvement, as well as provide the inspiration for developing new applications of SCCO2-based technologies in the field of chemical engineering for chemical synthesis and transformation, thus supplying a reliable and valuable reference for the development and industrial applications of SCCO2-based technologies.
