Abstract:Reverse saturable absorbers have shown great potential to attenuate laser radiation. Good candidate molecules and various particles have successfully been incorporated into different glass matrices, enabling the creation of self-activated filters against damaging laser radiation. Although the performance of such filters has been impressive, work is still ongoing to improve the performance in a wider range of wavelengths and pulse widths. The purpose of this tutorial is, from an optical engineering perspective, to give an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of this class of smart materials, how relevant photophysical parameters are measured and influence system performance and comment on the pitfalls in experimental evaluation of materials. A numerical population model in combination with simple physical formulas is used to demonstrate system behavior from a performance standpoint. Geometrical reasoning shows the advantage of reverse saturable absorption over nonlinear scattering due to a fraction of scattered light being recollected by imaging system optics. The numerical population model illustrates the importance of the optical power limiting performance during the leading edge of a nanosecond pulse, which is most strongly influenced by changes in the two-photon absorption cross section and the triplet linear absorption cross section for a modeled Pt-acetylide. This tutorial not only targets optical engineers evaluating reverse saturable absorbing materials but also aims to assist researchers with a chemistry background working on optical power limiting materials. We also present photophysical data for a series of coumarins that can be useful for the determination of quantum yields and two-photon cross sections and show examples of characterization of molecules with excited triplet states.

Abstract:Optical limiting properties based on reverse saturable absorption and thermal defocusing effect of organically modified sol-gel doped with octa-PdPc were studied. By utilizing this material, one optical limiter for indoor protection against visible pulse and continuous wave lasers was designed. The limiting effect of the limiter can be further enhanced by means of adjusting the size of the aperture or increase of the limiting medium layers. For the light with the wavelength of 488 nm, the transmittance of the limiter is less than 9% when aperture size is 2.2 cm. For lights of 632.8 nm, 514.5 nm and 457.9 nm, they have the similar limiting behaviors as the light of 488 nm.

Abstract:Although laser technology brings convenience to production and daily life, it also causes high-energy damage. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop optical limiting materials for laser protection. In this study, a novel nonlinear optical material, red/black phosphorus lateral heterojunction, is successfully prepared through solvothermal and ultrasonic treatment. Using the Z−scan method, the nonlinear optical properties of the red/black phosphorus heterojunction are determined at wavelengths of 532 and 1064 nm. These results indicate that the red/black phosphorus heterojunction exhibits reverse saturable absorption properties in 1.2.3-glycerol. Interestingly, the red/black phosphorus heterojunction shows an enhanced performance over red phosphorus by introducing the black phosphorus phase. Moreover, the red/black phosphorus heterojunction is doped into organically modified silicate gel glass with excellent broadband optical limiting performance. This study highlights the promising prospect of the red/black phosphorus heterojunction in the nonlinear optical and optical limiting fields.

Abstract:Broadband reverse saturable absorption is systematically investigated via Z-scan, transient absorption spectrum (TAS). The excited state absorption and negative refraction of Orange IV are observed in the Z-scan experiment at 532 nm. Meanwhile, two-photon-induced excited state absorption and pure two-photon absorption are observed at 600 nm and 700 nm with the pulse width of 190 fs, respectively. An ultrafast broadband absorption in the visible wavelength region is observed via TAS. The different nonlinear absorption mechanisms at multiple wavelengths are discussed and interpreted from the results of TAS. In addition, the ultrafast dynamics of negative refraction in the excited state of Orange IV are investigated via a degenerate phase object pump-probe, from which the weak long-lived excited state is extracted. All studies indicate that Orange IV has the potential to be further optimized into a superior broadband reverse saturable absorption material and also has certain reference significance for the study of optical nonlinearity in organic molecules containing azobenzene groups.

Abstract:We present a theoretical investigation on the open-aperture Gaussian-beam Z-scan technique for two dominant saturable absorption models, by using the Adomian decomposition method. Analytic expressions of the Z-scan traces are deduced for a cw laser and a pulsed laser, respectively; in particular, for performable simulations, the optimal sum upper limit is found. We give an experimental demonstration, in which a side-chain azobenzene polymer poly [6-[1-(4-(4-nitrophenylazo)phenyl) piperazine] hexyl methacrylate] (Pda) film behaves as a test sample. The results manifest that our theory is reasonable and the Pda film is a good saturable absorber at the wavelength of 532 nm.

Abstract:The invention discloses a three-dimensional dirac semi-metal material-based infrared saturable absorption device. A three-dimensional dirac semi-metal material with a zero band gap and a linear energy dispersion relation is utilized as a saturable absorption layer; an operating wavelength covers an infrared region; and a plurality of parameters have high adjustability. The three-dimensional dirac semi-metal material-based infrared saturable absorption device comprises the saturable absorption layer and an optical element, wherein the saturable absorption layer is formed by a three-dimensional dirac semi-metal material; and the optical element is required for bearing the saturable absorption layer; a reflective saturable absorption device comprises a functional layer (1), an optical substrate (2), the saturable absorption layer (3) and a reflecting layer (4) from top to bottom; a transmission type saturable absorption device comprises the functional layer (1), the optical substrate (2) an the saturable absorption layer (3); and the operating wavelength covers the infrared region. An infrared Q-switched and mode-locked laser device of the three-dimensional dirac semi-metal material-based saturable absorption device has the advantages of high stability, tunable operating wavelength, high output power and the like.

Abstract:The negative nonlinear index of a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) was investigated by using the reflection Z-scan technique. This is an experimental demonstration, for the first time to our knowledge, that the SESAM possesses comparable negative nonlinear index n(2) = -2.35 x 10(-10) esu, which may have important implications in design and alignment of Kerr-lens mode-locking based on the self-focusing effect.

Abstract:Two-dimensional mono-elemental material is an excellent saturable absorber candidate with low saturation intensity, large modulation depth, high nonlinearities, and fast recovery time of excited carriers. Typically, these mono-elemental material with two-dimensional structure possesses tunable bandgap from metallic to semiconducting according to different number of layers. The successful application of these materials as the saturable absorber has exploited the development of mode-locked fiber lasers. Therefore, this review is intended to provide an up-to-date information to the development of mono-elemental saturable absorber for the advances in mode-locked fiber laser, with emphasis on their material properties, synthesis process and material characterization. Meanwhile, issues and challenges of the review research topic will be highlighted and addressed with several concrete recommendations.

Abstract:Sb2Te3/GeTe bilayer films with different thickness ratios have been deposited on silicon substrate and fused quartz substrates by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering. Linear optical properties and optical bandgap of sample films were investigated firstly. With the thickness ratio changes, their transmittance differences decrease a lot at the wavelength range of 1500-1600 nm. Besides, the modulation depth of saturable absorption of samples will increase along to the incident power density or thickness ratio. Besides incident power density, interface states between topological insulation characteristic Sb2Te3 and ferroelectric GeTe layers will also affect the modulation depth greatly.

Abstract:The reverse saturable absorption and the optical limiting (OL) property of fullerene-functionalized polycarbonates (C60–PCs) which were synthesized by a direct reaction of C60 and PC in the presence of AIBN using 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane as the solvent under microwave irradiation (MI) was investigated by z-scan technique in femtosecond scale. Its reverse saturable absorption behavior was believed to being caused by the covalently attached fullerene to the polymer chain and was found to be of the same order as C60. The measured OL results revealed that the absorption cross-section of the photo-excited singlet state was larger than that of the ground state, and the ratio of the absorption cross-section of the photo-excited singlet state to that of the ground state was determined by fitting the experimental data to the numerical integration by using the rate equation treatment. These new synthesized materials which are soluble in common organic solvents can be considered as potential sources for further optical applications, especially in ultrashort scale.

Abstract:By using an Open-Aperture Z-scan technique with both femtosecond and nanosecond laser pulses at 1064nm, the nonlinear optical properties of GaAs and Bi-doped GaAs, including the saturable absorption property and reverse saturable absorption property are systematically measured and analyzed directly in detail. Compared to pure GaAs, Bi-doped GaAs has a lower saturation intensity, wider saturable absorption energy region, lower two-photon absorption coefficient, better saturable absorption response and stronger optical limiting response. The results suggest that the incorporation of Bismuth in GaAs is an effective way of improving the nonlinear optical properties of GaAs, which provide crucial experimental evidence for that the characteristics of the passively Q-switched laser with Bi-doped GaAs saturable absorber is better than pure GaAs.

Abstract:Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials with vanishing permittivity exhibit unprecedented optical nonlinearity within subwavelength propagation lengths in the ENZ region, making them promising photoelectric materials that have achieved exciting results in ultrafast pulse laser modulations. In this study, we fabricated a novel saturable absorber (SA) based on a corrugated indium tin oxide (CITO) film with a symmetrical geometry using a low-cost self-assembly process. The strong saturable absorption of the CITO film triggered by the ENZ effect at normal incidence was comparable to that of the planar indium tin oxide (ITO) film at an optimal 60° incidence (TM polarization) at 1340 nm. In addition, the strong nonlinear optical properties of the CITO film were not limited by the incident angle and polarization state of the pump laser over a wide range of 0–20°. Benefiting from the excellent saturable absorption of CITO-based SA at normal incidence, a Q-switching operation with CITO-based SA at 1.34 μm was achieved in a Nd:YVO 4 solid-state laser system, obtaining pulses of a duration of 85.6 ns, which was one order of magnitude narrower than that of the planar ITO-based SA. This study presents a new strategy for developing high-performance ENZ-based SAs and ultrafast lasers.

Abstract:Layered transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are drawing significant attentions for the applications of optics and optoelectronics. To achieve optimal performances of functional devices, precisely controlled doping engineering of 2D TMDs alloys has provided a reasonable approach to tailor their physical and chemical properties. By the chemical vapor transport (CVT) method and liquid phase exfoliation technique, in this work, we synthesized WS1.76Te0.24 saturable absorber (SA) which exhibited high-performance of nonlinear optics. The nonlinear saturable absorption of the WS1.76Te0.24 SA was also measured by the open aperture Z-scan technique. Compared to that of the binary component WS2 and WTe2, WS1.76Te0.24 SA has shown 4 times deeper modulation depth, 28% lower saturable intensity and a much faster recovery time of 3.8 ps. The passively Q-switched laser based on WS1.76Te0.24 was more efficient, with pulse duration narrowed to 18%, threshold decreased to 28% and output power enlarged by 200%. The promising findings can provide a method to optimize performances of functional devices by doping engineering.

Abstract:Recently, the semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) has become a key component of passive mode-locked solid-state lasers. Here we present a simple method based on the reflection Z-scan technique to measure the key optical parameters of SESAM such as saturation fluence and modulation depth. The experimental results demonstrate that our method is able to perform with a high accuracy of 10−4 and a dynamic range of over four orders of magnitude.

Abstract:The optical limiting properties of four optically active phthalocyanine derivatives in chloroform solutions and epoxy resin thin plates were measured at 532 nm with 10 ns pulses. The excited state absorption cross-section σex and refractive-index cross-section σr were determined with the Z-scan technique. These chromophores possess larger σex than the ground state absorption cross-section σ0, indicating that they are the potential materials for reverse saturable absorption (RSA). The negative σr values of these chromophores add to the thermal contribution, producing a larger defocusing effect, which may be helpful in further enhancing their optical limiting performance. The optical limiting responses of the thin plate samples are stronger than those of the chloroform solutions.

Abstract:Nonlinear absorption properties of a newly-synthesized molecule 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (p-hexadecyloxyphenyl) porphyrin are studied experimentally and theoretically in this paper.Using a nanosecond optical parametric oscillator(OPO),we obtain the open aperture Z-scan data over the wavelength ranging from 710 nm to 820 nm.Results show that the porphyrin derivative has a large nonlinear absorption coefficient,which has potential applications as novel optical power limiting material.

Abstract:CsPbBr3 perovskite quantum dots (QDs) material was synthesized by a hot injection method. CsPbBr3/PMMA organic glasses (OGs) were fabricated by dispersing CsPbBr3 QDs in methyl methacrylate (MMA). The open-aperture (OA) and closed-aperture (CA) Z-scan technique were used to investigate the nonlinear absorption (NLA) and nonlinear refraction (NLR) property of CsPbBr3/PMMA organic glasses, respectively. The changeover from saturable absorption (SA) to reverse saturable absorption (RSA) was observed in CsPbBr3/PMMA organic glasses with the increasing of the input energy (30–110 μJ). When the input energy is 110 μJ, the NLA coefficient is β = 1.43 × 102 cm GW−1 and the NLR coefficient is γ = −4.5 × 10−4 cm2 GW−1. CsPbBr3/PMMA organic glasses exhibit excellent optical limiting (OL) performance due to the enhanced NLA and NLR effects. The results show that CsPbBr3 QDs can be used for laser protection.
