Abstract:A new model was developed to describe the diffusion limitation on free radical polyme-rization. In this model the termination rate coefficient ( k t ) and propagation rate coefficient ( k p ) were expressed as a function of bulk viscosity (η). This model was used to simulate the batch thermal polymerization of styrene (St) and the continuous thermal bulk copolymerization of St (monomer 1) and maleic anhydride (MAH, monomer 2) in a CSTR with on-line monitor of the rheological behavior. The simulated results on polymerization conversion, copolymer composition, molecular weight and its distributions were compared with the experimental data, and the results calculated by two previous gel-effect models i.e. Martin-Hamielec and Tulig-Tirrell models. It was found that the present model produces better prediction than that of the Tulig-Tirrell model and has the same accuracy as that of the Martin-Hamielec model, but is much simpler.

Abstract:Controlled radical polymerization (CRP) represents an important advancement in polymer chemistry. It allows synthesis of polymers with well-controlled chain microstructures. Reactor engineering is essential in bringing lab-scale chemistry to industrial realization. This paper reviews the research progress in reactor engineering of CRP, namely, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer radical polymerization (RAFT), and nitroxide-mediated or stable free radical polymerization (NMP or SFRP). Research activities in semi-batch reactors, tubular reactors, and continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTR) of both homogeneous (bulk and solution) and heterogeneous (emulsion, mini-emulsion, heterogeneous catalyst, etc.) CRP systems are summarized. Typical examples are selected and discussed in detail. Perspectives on the current status and future development are also provided.

Abstract:The product from free radical and coordination polymerization generally are homopolymer or random copolymer with broad molecular weight distribution.In the past two decades,the breakthroughs in controlled/living radical and coordination polymerization and shuttling polymerization make it possible to use almost all vinyl monomers,particularly those cheap monomers,to produce more complex chain structures like di-,tri-block copolymer and gradient copolymers.With rational design,these copolymers might be high performance and high added value synthetic materials.The mechanisms and the up-to-date progress of these polymerization methods were introduced,and their possible applications were discussed.

Abstract:Although controlled/living radical copolymerization has been extensively studied, the control of copolymer composition distribution receives little attention. In this paper, taking RAFT copolymerization as an example, we develop a mathematical model and simulate copolymerization systems with various reactivity ratios. It is demonstrated that through semi-batch operations with programmed profiles of slow monomer feeding rate, precise control over copolymer composition distribution (uniform and designed gradient distributions) along polymer chain can be achieved. It is also found that the semi-batch operations have lower rates of polymerization than their batch counterparts. The reason for this difference is analyzed, and the magnitude depends on the reactivity ratios and targeted copolymer composition. The improvement of the semi-batch rate by distributing a part of the initiator amount to the monomer feeding tank is found to be minor.

Abstract:Controlled/living radical polymerization is a versatile method,by which the molecular weight,polydispersity and architectures of polymers can be controlled effectively.Polyacrylonitrile(PAN) and its copolymers have been widely used in many fields due to their excellent fiber-and membrane-forming properties.This review highlights the progress in synthesis of PAN and its block copolymers through controlled/living radical polymerization by addressing the mechanisms of nitroxide-mediated polymerization(NMP),iniferter,atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer(RAFT) polymerization.It also offers some suggestions as to future development and remaining challenges in this topical area.

Abstract:There are presently two ways to realize "controlled/living radical polymerization": one is by a reversible termination or reversible chain transfer to make active polymer chains continuously propagate; the other is by a physical method to suppress chain termination and to prolong radical lifetime, Here we report a new method called Graduation Initiating Radical Polymerization System for realizing "controlled/wing radical polymerization", Its principle and experimental setup are as follows: firstly, initiatable groups (i.e. peroxide groups) were introduced onto the polymer substrates like LDPE film by photo-oxidation reaction; secondly, the films carried peroxide groups were put and fixed to the bottom of polymerization bottle containing monomer and solvent, Afterwards, they were made to produce radicals(by heating or reductive agent), and finally the system polymerization was initiated. Once these radicals are produced on the surface of these films, they will undergo three different processes: terminating by combination, diffusing to monomer solution and taking in monomers (polymerizing), The reactive diffusion makes this system produce "two graduation": one is the graduation of radical concentration (i.e. the farther away from the surface of the film, the lower radical concentration); the other is the length-graduation of living chains, i.e. the farther away from the surface of the film the longer the propagating chains, By this way, we could obtain a polymerization field where the radical concentration is very low and there are no primary free radicals approximately, which are benefit to realize "controlled/living radical polymerization", This communication reports the first experimental results based on the above idea: with benzophenone(BP) as photo-catalyst and peroxide groups introduced on the LDPE surface in a concentration 10(-8) mol/cm(2); by these peroxided films as the sources of free radicals, polyacrylamide and polyacrylic acid were obtained with molecular weights more than 20 millions.

Abstract:Radical polymerization (RP) of multivinyl monomers (MVMs) provides a facile solution for manipulating polymer topology and has received increasing attention due to their industrial and academic significance. Continuous efforts have been made to understand their mechanism, which is the key to regulating materials structure. Modelling techniques have become a powerful tool that can provide detailed information on polymerization kinetics which is inaccessible by experiments. Many publications have reported the combination of experiments and modelling for free radical polymerization (FRP) and reversible-deactivation radical polymerizations (RDRP) of MVMs. Herein, a minireview is presented for the most important modelling techniques and their applications in FRP/RDRP of MVMs. This review hopes to illustrate that the combination of modelling and wet experiments can be a great asset to polymer researchers and inspire new thinking for the future MVMs experiment optimization and product design.

Abstract:A kinetic model has been developed using the method of moment for surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (s-ATRP) from flat solid surfaces based on a moving boundary physical model. The model is verified with the experimental data of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine from silicon wafer, which were carried out by either adding free initiator (Method I) or excess deactivator (Method II) to the solution. It is shown through the modeling that Method II gives better control over polymer molecular weight and thicker graft layer under similar conditions than Method I. A new mechanism is proposed for the radical termination based on the fact that the rapid activation/deactivation cycle reactions facilitate "migration" of radical centers on the surface. The rate constant of "migration termination" is thus catalyst concentration dependent with higher catalyst concentration resulting in higher termination. Lowering catalyst concentration suppressed migration termination that could improve the control and livingness of s-ATRP. However, there exists a catalyst concentration for the optimal control performance.

Abstract:Since atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was developed, various strategies have been adopted to design well-controlled ATRP procedures. However, there is no single criterion that could be used for various ATRP reaction conditions (e.g., different monomers, different targeted degrees of polymerization, conversions, etc.). In this work, we introduce a new factor Active Kinetic Chain Length (AKCL) as a parameter that can guide the design of well-controlled ATRPs. Under a certain reaction system with a specific monomer type (kp), monomer concentration ([M]0), and targeted degrees of polymerization, the smaller value of AKCL, i.e., a smaller initial number of monomer units added to a growing chain during a chain active period, can decrease polymer dispersity and also diminish the radical termination. The effects of AKCL were compared with other parameters affecting dispersity and livingness in ATRPs, which clearly demonstrates the design principle of AKCL. The model examples of deactivation-enhanced ATRP (DE-ATRP) have further shown the effectiveness of this criterion.

Abstract:The construction of complex polymer architectures with well-defined topology, composition and functionality has been extensively explored as the molecular basis for the development of modern polymer materials. The unique reaction kinetics of free-radical polymerization leads to the concurrent formation of crosslinks between polymer chains and rings within an individual chain and, thus, free-radical (co)polymerization of multivinyl monomers provides a facile method to manipulate chain topology and functionality. Regulating the relative contribution of these intermolecular and intramolecular chain-propagation reactions is the key to the construction of architecturally complex polymers. This can be achieved through the design of new monomers or by spatially or kinetically controlling crosslinking reactions. These mechanisms enable the synthesis of various polymer architectures, including linear, cyclized, branched and star polymer chains, as well as crosslinked networks. In this Review, we highlight some of the contemporary experimental strategies to prepare complex polymer architectures using radical polymerization of multivinyl monomers. We also examine the recent development of characterization techniques for sub-chain connections in such complex macromolecules. Finally, we discuss how these crosslinking reactions have been engineered to generate advanced polymer materials for use in a variety of biomedical applications.

Abstract:Molecular oxygen is a radical scavenger in both conventional and controlled radical polymerization (CRP), resulting in many time-consuming methods for physically removing oxygen before the polymerization. Different approaches have been developed to have oxygen tolerance by chemically consuming or converting molecular oxygen into non-initiating species to address this issue. Recently, we propose another approach called oxygen initiation that directly transforms molecular oxygen into the initiating carbon radical in CRP. This feature article summarizes our recent developments in this direction. Oxygen-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization has been successfully conducted using oxygen and trialkylborane as co-initiators under the ambient conditions and atmosphere without any prior degassed procedures. This gas-triggered initiation provides the opportunity for spatiotemporal control of the polymerization by molecular oxygen or air. Rationally synthesized alkylborane compounds could derive the predesigned structure of the initiating alkyl radical to minimize the side reactions and free polymer chains, achieving the synthesis of ultra-high molecular weight polymers. The challenges and perspectives are also discussed in the end.

Abstract:Free radical polymerization（FRP） is one of the key polymerization reactions, its kinetic coefficient is imperative for mechanism study, chain structure customization, and reaction process control. In this paper, we review the state-of-art characterization technique involved in determination of critical parameters in FRP, i. e.,propagation rate coefficient and termination rate coefficient. A pulsed laser polymerization（PLP） in conjunction with size exclusion chromatography（SEC） is effective to determine propagation rate coefficient. A particular single pulse-pulsed laser polymerization（SP-PLP） in conjunction with near infrared（NIR） and electron paramagnetic resonance（EPR） spectroscopy is unrivaled to identify termination rate coefficient. The theory, test prerequisites,and testing conditions for each detection method are outlined, and the effects of increased radical chain length on propagation and termination rate coefficient are discussed. In addition, the potential on the improvement and development of new technique for the propagation rate coefficient and termination rate coefficient is delivered.

Abstract:There is a controversial debate about the mechanism of the Cu-0-catalyzed radical polymerization. Herein, a comparative analysis of a series of reactions catalyzed by different valent copper shows that the induction period and the subsequent autoaccelerated polymerization of a Cu-0/Me6TREN-catalyzed system originate from the accumulation of soluble copper species, and Cu-I is still a powerful activator under its disproportionation favored conditions.

Abstract:Controlled radical polymerization (CRP) is a versatile way to control polymer microscopic structures through establishing a dynamic equilibrium between radical and dormant polymers. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), a typical case of CRP, has the ability to be conducted in mild conditions and produce uniformly distributed polymers. Moreover, the amount of metal addition can be greatly reduced in ATRP processes with the development of photochemical techniques. Photo induced ATRP (photoATRP) has a significant impact on sustainable production in industry. Modeling the microscopic quantities of polymers for photoATRP systems provides insights into the kinetic characteristics. In this work, a Monte Carlo (MC) approach, based on Gillespie’s stochastic simulation algorithm, is developed for the photoATRP processes at microscopic resolution. The length dependency of the individual chains on the radical, dormant, and dead polymer information is captured. The polymerization rate of PhotoATRP is sensitive to light irradiation. The polymerization process model of photoATRP systems based on the MC method for temporal control over polymer growth is established. Kinetic characteristics are studied from the developed model under the condition of light source intermittency. The developed MC model is validated against the deterministic method of moments (MoM) and experimental results.

Progress in Polymer Science

Abstract:During the first 100 years of polymer science, controlled radical polymerization (also recommended as reversible deactivation radical polymerization) is undoubtedly a revolutionary discovery. Owing to the mild reaction conditions, the broad applicability, and the accessibility to produce well-defined functional polymers, controlled radical polymerization has gained a plethora of interest from both academia and industry. In this review, the efforts made by both polymer chemistry and reaction engineering communities to fully exploit the potential of controlled radical polymerization in precision polymer synthesis are retrospected. Highlights on how the synergetic experimental and modeling tools can offer the unique information on the mechanistic understanding, kinetic insights, and the chain microstructures tuning are provided. Future research directions in this area are also outlined. Hopefully, this review can stimulate future developments of controlled radical polymerizations in the next 100 years of polymer science.

MONTE-CARLO SIMULATION OF KINETICS AND CHAIN-LENGTH DISTRIBUTION IN RADICAL POLYMERIZATION

Abstract:In this paper, the Monte Carlo method for numerically simulating the kinetics and chain-length distribution in radical polymerization is described. Because the Monte Carlo method is not subject to the assumption of steady-state, it is particularly suitable for studying the kinetic behaviour before the steady-state has been reached and for systems in which the steady-state assumption may be violated. Illustrative applications of the algorithm given in this paper not only demonstrate convincingly both the feasibility and usefulness of the algorithm, but also provide some new insight into the illustrative examples. For the case of pseudostationary radical polymerization such as rotating-sector and pulsed-laser initiations, we have found that the pseudostationary radical concentration can be reached after two or three initiation periods. However, the number-average chain-length x(n)BAR reaches the pseudostationary value much slower than the radical concentration. It is oscillatively reaching the pseudostationary value, and the amplitudes of the oscillations are decreasing with time. We have also found that the chain-length distribution of the resulting polymer in the case of pseudostationary radical polymerization with termination by combination has stronger periodic modulation. Hence, it should be easier to locate the points of inflection in practice. Therefore, the rate constant of propagation, k(p), can be determined precisely for systems which are dominated by a combination-type of termination.
