Abstract:Controlled/living radical polymerization is a versatile method,by which the molecular weight,polydispersity and architectures of polymers can be controlled effectively.Polyacrylonitrile(PAN) and its copolymers have been widely used in many fields due to their excellent fiber-and membrane-forming properties.This review highlights the progress in synthesis of PAN and its block copolymers through controlled/living radical polymerization by addressing the mechanisms of nitroxide-mediated polymerization(NMP),iniferter,atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer(RAFT) polymerization.It also offers some suggestions as to future development and remaining challenges in this topical area.

Abstract:The product from free radical and coordination polymerization generally are homopolymer or random copolymer with broad molecular weight distribution.In the past two decades,the breakthroughs in controlled/living radical and coordination polymerization and shuttling polymerization make it possible to use almost all vinyl monomers,particularly those cheap monomers,to produce more complex chain structures like di-,tri-block copolymer and gradient copolymers.With rational design,these copolymers might be high performance and high added value synthetic materials.The mechanisms and the up-to-date progress of these polymerization methods were introduced,and their possible applications were discussed.

Abstract:This paper aims at reporting on the "living"/controlled radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated with the benzoyl peroxide (BPO)/ (CuX)-X-I (X=Br,Cl)/2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) redox system at room temperature. No control is observed for the polymerization conducted in bulk and in toluene, whereas a polymer with predetermined molecular weight and rather narrow molecular weight distribution is formed in butanone. The solvent has thus a decisive effect on the reserve atom-transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated with the BPO/(CuX)-X-I (X=Br,Cl)/byp ternary system at 25 degreesC.

Abstract:In recent years,the controlled radical polymerization through photoredox catalysis has been developed rapidly.The extension of the suitable monomer range and the optimization of reaction conditions make this method a useful way to synthesize functional polymer materials.In this review,the recent progress in photoredox controlled living polymerization was summarized,and some representative examples involving the use of monomer types were discussed.We hope this review can provide researchers with new ways and ideas for designing novel photopolymerization and functional polymer materials.

By using stable free radical, such as nitroxides, as reversible terminating agents of the polymerization process, the propagation chains can be deactivated reversibly, so they are able to initiating and growing again in photoactiving and thermalactiving polymerization. The living radical polymerization can control the molecular weight, polydispersity, the chain-end, the architectural and structure of disterent polymers.

Abstract:Solvated electron (esol−) is highly reducing species and apt to initiate monomers via one‐electron transfer reaction. Herein, utilizing the esol− solution of Na/hexamethylphosphoramide, radical and anionic initiations were observed respectively, which heavily depended on Na concentrations. Interestingly, this initiation system, in states of lower Na concentrations, higher molar conductivities and less paired esol−, gave rise to a controlled radical polymerization (CRP) to yield polymers with predictable molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions (the lowest Ð = 1.25). This CRP presented unique behaviors, like solvent effect, electric field effect and unusual copolymerization phenomenon. A semi‐conjugated radical carrying a negative charge is proposed to be responsible for the CRP. This system gives a distinct way to regulate CRP from current CRPs, and offers new insights into the monomer initiation by esol−. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Abstract:The developments of the living alkene polymerization method have achieved great progress and enabled the precise synthesis of important polyalkenes with controlled molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and architecture through an anionic, cationic or radical strategy. However, it is still challenging to develop a living alkene polymerization method through an all-in-one strategy where anionic and radical characteristics are merged into one polymerization species. Here, a versatile living polymerization method is reported by introducing a well-established all-in-one covalent-anionic-radical Barbier strategy into a living polymerization. Through this living covalent-anionic-radical Barbier polymerization (Barbier CARP), narrow distributed polystyrenes, with <i>Đ</i> as low as 1.05, are successfully prepared under mild conditions with a full monomer conversion by using wide varieties of organohalides, for example, alkyl, benzyl, allyl, and phenyl halides, as initiators with Mg in one pot. This living covalent-anionic-radical polymerization via a Barbier strategy expands the methodology library of polymer chemistry and enables living polymerization with an unconventional polymerization mode.

Abstract:"Living" radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate was investigated in a new reaction system.Ethyl 2-bromoisobutyrate/CuBr/[Hmim][CH_3COO]/MMA,in which [Hmim][CH_3COO] ionic liquid is a good solvent to CuBr.The polymerization belongs to an ATRP process.The effect of initiator concentration on the polymerization was examined.With the increasing of the concentration of initiator,the efficiency of initiation decreases.The polymerization is well controlled and exhibited living characteristics at 50 ℃.PMMA obtained by this procedure are narrow disposed.PDI is less than 1.26.

Abstract:There are presently two ways to realize "controlled/living radical polymerization": one is by a reversible termination or reversible chain transfer to make active polymer chains continuously propagate; the other is by a physical method to suppress chain termination and to prolong radical lifetime, Here we report a new method called Graduation Initiating Radical Polymerization System for realizing "controlled/wing radical polymerization", Its principle and experimental setup are as follows: firstly, initiatable groups (i.e. peroxide groups) were introduced onto the polymer substrates like LDPE film by photo-oxidation reaction; secondly, the films carried peroxide groups were put and fixed to the bottom of polymerization bottle containing monomer and solvent, Afterwards, they were made to produce radicals(by heating or reductive agent), and finally the system polymerization was initiated. Once these radicals are produced on the surface of these films, they will undergo three different processes: terminating by combination, diffusing to monomer solution and taking in monomers (polymerizing), The reactive diffusion makes this system produce "two graduation": one is the graduation of radical concentration (i.e. the farther away from the surface of the film, the lower radical concentration); the other is the length-graduation of living chains, i.e. the farther away from the surface of the film the longer the propagating chains, By this way, we could obtain a polymerization field where the radical concentration is very low and there are no primary free radicals approximately, which are benefit to realize "controlled/living radical polymerization", This communication reports the first experimental results based on the above idea: with benzophenone(BP) as photo-catalyst and peroxide groups introduced on the LDPE surface in a concentration 10(-8) mol/cm(2); by these peroxided films as the sources of free radicals, polyacrylamide and polyacrylic acid were obtained with molecular weights more than 20 millions.

Abstract:Fluoroalkenes are feedstocks in the manufacture of high-performance fluoropolymers with various applications. However, the synthesis of well-defined fluoropolymers typically requires harsh conditions and high-pressure techniques to handle gaseous fluoroalkenes. Here, we report the combination of a redox-relay pathway and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) catalysis to enable controlled copolymerizations of various fluoroalkenes, under ambient conditions. Using this method, a broad scope of main-chain fluoropolymers is prepared with excellent selectivity at low organocatalyst dosages (loadings down to 5 ppm). In addition, polymers with various sequences (for example, diblock and triblock) and topologies (either brush or branched) are synthesized by integration with different agents and synthetic protocols. Mechanistic studies reveal that the rationally designed organic TADF catalyst displays the unique characteristics of redox-relay-based electron transfer, a long lifetime of delayed fluorescence and fine-tuned electronic properties. This work provides an informative concept for precise polymer synthesis and may inspire advanced applications in fluoropolymer engineering.

Abstract:A visible-light-induced free radical polymerization has been developed. Distinct from living radical polymerizations, this polymerization process is not controlled in the chain growth step but the initiation step, by in situ generation of a constantly low concentration of initiator radicals. On-off experiments demonstrate the ease of controllability of the process, which indicate that it may be an improved method for radical polymerization, since it can be initiated immediately by powering on a light, without any process of preheating the reaction mixture, and can also be sharply stopped by turning off the light, without any cooling process. By adjusting the photo irradiation strength, reaction temperature, and the amount of the initiator system, the molar mass as well as conversion rate can be accurately tuned, which is not easy to realize in other free radical polymerization systems. Notably, a molar mass as high as 5.64 x 10(5) g mol(-1) (D = 1.71) is achieved with this new methodology.

Abstract:The chain transfer and termination of vinyl acetate offen occur in polymerizatoin,so living/controlled radical polymerization of vinyl acetate is a large chanllenge.Different controlled radical polymerizations of vinyl acetate were summarized in this paper.Among these methods,RAFT mediated by xanthate and dithiocarbamate,cobalt mediated radical polymerization reallize the living/controlled radical polymerization of vinyl acetate.

Abstract:Controlled/living radical polymerization (CRP) is a widely used technique that allows the synthesis of defined polymer architectures through precise control of molecular weights and distributions. However, the architectures of polymers prepared by the CRP techniques are limited to linear, cross-linked, and branched/dendritic structures. Here, we report the preparation of a new 3D single cyclized polymer chain structure from an in situ deactivation enhanced atom transfer radical polymerization of multivinyl monomers (MVMs), which are conventionally used for the production of branched/cross-linked polymeric materials as defined by P. Flory and W. Stockmayer nearly 70 years ago. We provide new evidence to demonstrate that it is possible to kinetically control both the macromolecular architecture and the critical gelling point in the polymerization of MVMs, suggesting the classical Flory-Stockmayer mean field theory should be supplemented with a new kinetic theory based on the space and instantaneous growth boundary concept.

Abstract:It was reported that living radical polymerization of styrene,methyl methacrylate,methyl acrylate was initiated at lower temperature using ethyl α bromobutyrate as an initiator and CuBr/2,2' bipyridine as a catalyst.MMA could undergo living free radical polymerization at 20℃.The “living” characteristics of the polymerization were studied.Low Mw/Mn of the polymers (1.15～1.45) was obtained.The kinetic data of the three systems were calculated and the factors affecting the “living” characteristic of the polymerization were discussed.

Abstract:Although visible-light photoredox catalysis has implemented diverse reaction mechanisms for the synthesis of well-defined polymers with precision spatiotemporal control, the tolerance of redox-sensitive monomers remains a formidable challenge. In an alternative way, the photoiniferter polymerization technique offers an opportunity to address this unmet need. Herein, we report an efficient iodine-transfer radical ring-opening polymerization of vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs), affording unsaturated linear polymers with predictable molecular weight and low dispersity. Commercially available alkyl iodide and light strips are used to initiate and control the polymer chain growth. Notably, this light-driven system tolerates active pentafluorophenyl ester group, whereby nearly quantitative post-modifications proceed and have rendered one-for-all preparation of polymers including crystalline semi-fluorinated P(VCPs) with enhanced material properties.

Abstract:The use of light to mediate controlled radical polymerization has emerged as a powerful strategy for rational polymer synthesis and advanced materials fabrication. This review provides a comprehensive survey of photocontrolled, living radical polymerizations (photo-CRPs). From the perspective of mechanism, all known photo-CRPs are divided into either (1) intramolecular photochemical processes or (2) photoredox processes. Within these mechanistic regimes, a large number of methods are summarized and further classified into subcategories based on the specific reagents, catalysts, etc., involved. To provide a clear understanding of each subcategory, reaction mechanisms are discussed. In addition, applications of photo-CRP reported so far, which include surface fabrication, particle preparation, photoresponsive gel design, and continuous flow technology, are summarized. We hope this review will not only provide informative knowledge to researchers in this field but also stimulate new ideas and applications to further advance photocontrolled reactions.

Abstract:AbstractOrganocatalyzed reversible‐deactivation radical polymerizations (RDRPs) are attractive for many applications. Here, we developed photoredox‐mediated RDRP by activating (hetero)aryl sulfonyl chloride (ArSO2Cl) initiators with pyridines and designing a novel bis(phenothiazine)arene catalyst. The in situ formed sulfonyl pyridinium intermediates effectively promote controlled chain‐growth from ArSO2Cl, enabling access to various well‐defined polymers with high initiation efficiencies and controlled dispersities under mild conditions. This versatile method allows “ON/OFF” temporal control, chain‐extension, facile synthesis of different polymer brushes via organocatalyzed grafting reactions from linear chains. Time‐resolved fluorescence decay studies and calculations support the reaction mechanism. This work provides a transition‐metal‐free RDRP to tailor polymers with readily available aromatic initiators, and will promote the design of polymerization leveraged from photoredox catalysis.
