Abstract:One of the methods for prediction of submarine manoeuvring is to solve the submarine motion equations. For such a method, the key issue is to obtain the accurate hydrodynamic forces and moments in the motion equations. Nowadays, they can be directly computed by means of a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) approach or be approximated by using a manoeuvring mathematical model with hydrodynamic derivatives. For the latter, however, it has to make very clear the manoeuvring hydrodynamic performance for the submarine performing coupling motions in space. The existent reported studies might be still lacking in this regard. For this reason, we now enable the old self-developed RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes) code based on OpenFOAM, which can be applied to simulate the flow around a surface ship in captive motions, to have the ability for a submarine in six DoF (Degree-of-Freedom) motion. The new RANS code is applicable for a submarine performing any steady coupling motion in space. First of all, the RANS code is validated by comparing the computed surge forces, sway forces and yaw moments for the submarine SUBOFF in oblique motion with available experimental data. Acceptable agreements between them are found. Then, the hydrodynamic performance is fully investigated by analysing the computed manoeuvring forces and moments for the submarine in a series of steady captive coupling motions, i.e. steady sway-yaw, etc. It is found that a few hydrodynamic derivatives, which were neglected in the traditional manoeuvring mathematical model for submarines, are not small, and should be considered for manoeuvring prediction. The present work may provide a valuable reference for the improvement of accuracy in modelling of manoeuvring forces and moments for a submarine, and consequently for the improvement of manoeuvring prediction accuracy.
