Abstract:The Ermiaogou Cu-Au deposit is located within the Zijinshan ore field in southwestern Fujian Province. This deposit has similar styles of mineralization and alteration with the Zijinshan Cu-Au deposit. Mineralization was surrounded by acidic subvolcanic and closely related to porphyritic dacites and breccias, which suggested that both deposits may share similar genesis. Both the Ermiaogou Cu-Au deposit and the Zijinshan Cu-Au deposit belong to high-sulfidation epithermal low temperature hydrothermal deposits, which are significantly different from the Luoboling porphyry Cu-Mo deposit and the Yueyang low-sulfidation epithermal low temperature hydrothermal deposit. The Ermiaogou porphyritic dacites are closely related to the Cu-Au mineralization within the deposit. Our new precise zircon U-Pb dating results reveal that the Ermiaogou porphyritic dacite was emplaced in the Early Cretaceous (106 similar to 108 Ma), which are similar to those of porphyritic dacite in the Zijinshan deposit. These results suggest that both deposits were resulted from the same period of magmatism and the large-scale volcanic-intrusive activity related to mineralization in the Cretaceous. Geochemically, the Ermiaogou porphyritic dacite shows high Si and K contents and weakly peraluminous. The rocks are enriched in LILEs and LREE; depleted in Nb, Ta, P, Ti; no/weak negative Eu; and characterized by strongly fractionated REE pattern and high Sr/Y and La/Yb ratios. It also exhibits low initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios (0. 712698 to 0. 713174), moderate epsilon(Nd) (t) (-6. 26 to -4. 94) and high zircon epsilon(Hf) (t) (-4. 52 to 1. 66) values. Interpretation of the elemental and isotopic data suggests that the Ermiaogou porphyritic dacite has some affinities with the adakite, and was most likely generated via a process including mixing of enriched mantle-derived mafic magmas and induced felsic magmas formed by partial melting of lower crust materials under a back-arc extensional environment that may have caused by the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific plate. Enriched mantle-derived melts have high oxygen fugacities and high H2O content, thus potentially are major sources for Cu-Au metals. Mafic magmas derived from enriched mantle can change their hydrous and redox state by mixing with crust-derived melts, and led to generate adakitic magma by magmatic differentiation under high pressure, which may further result in the relevant Cu-Au mineralization at Ermiaogou.
Chemical Compositions of Alloys from Podiform Chromitites in the Luobusa Ophiolite, Tibet

Abstract:A group of mantle minerals containing about 70～80 subtypes of minerals have been discovered from podiform chromitites in the Luobusa ophiolite, Tibet, China, in which the alloys attract the attention of geologists. This paper reports the types and compositions of the alloys. The alloys were mostly handpicked from heavy mineral separates of the chromitites, and a few of them can be found in thin sections of chromitites. PGE minerals associated with the alloys in the Luobusa chromitites have been reported by Bai et al. (2000). Some alloy systems are reported in this paper, including the Ni (Fe)-C-Cr, W-Cr-Co; Al-Fe-La; Fe-Si-Ti; Ag-Sn-Si; Ni-Ir-Fe; Fe-Pd-Pt and Fe-Ni-C systems. The alloys in the Luobusa chromitites clearly indicate that they were formed under reducing conditions, but we argue that the chromites may have been formed from boninitic melts and the alloys are xenoliths of crystals to be held up in the mantle during the core formation, or have been transported from the core to lower mantle by a plume, and then incorporated in the chromitites during its crystallization.
Petrogenesis and metallogeny of the Dongguashan Cu-Au deposit in the Tongling ore-cluster region, the Lower Yangtze River Metallogenic Belt: Constraints from geochemistry and geochronology

Abstract:The Dongguashan Cu-Au deposit located in the eastern portion of the Tongling mining distrct, the Lower Yangtze River Metallogenic Belt (LYRB), Eastern China is a typical one associated with the Qingshanjiao quartz monzodiorite, including porphyry, skarn, and stratabound ores. In order to constrain the petrogenesis of the intrusive rocks and associated Cu-Au mineralization, detailed analyses of the zircon geochronology and geochemistry, whole-rock geochemistry and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes, and zircon Lu-Hf isotopes were performed. Magmatic zircons from quartz monzodiorite yield U-Pb ages of 136-138 Ma, revealing their formation ages of early Cretaceous. Geochemical characteristics of the quartz monzodiorites (SiO2 = 63.6-66.2 wt.%, high Sr, low Y and Yb concentrations) discriminate their adakitic affinity. They are enriched in LILE and LREE, depleted in HFSE and HREE, and has no or slightly negative Eu anomalies. These geochemical characteristics indicate that the monzodiorites may be primarily derived from the magma mixing of mantle- and LCC-derived melts. The relatively low εNd(t) values (-11.7 to -10.7) and high (87Sr/86Sr)i ratios (0.7075 to 0.7078) may be plausibly interpreted by contamination of enriched mantle materials and/or continental crust. The high radiogenic Pb isotopes with (206Pb/204Pb)i=17.98-18.09, (207Pb/204Pb)i=15.51-15.53, and (208Pb/204Pb)i= 38.18-38.26 plot in the field of MORB, near the intersection of EM-1 and EM-2, and are considerably different from those of the upper and lower continental crust and the Dabie adakites, which exclude major contamination from the continental crust. Ti-in-zircon temperatures and calculated Ce4+/Ce3+ values fall within the field between MH and FMQ. The results indicate that the intrusive rocks and associated large-scale Cu-Au mineralization in the Dongguashan deposit are resulted from the magma mixing of mantle- and LCC-derived melts. in a lower magma temperature, yet higher fO2 and water content environment.

Abstract:The northwestern Zhejiang Province, located in the southern part of the Yangtze block, belongs to a part of the Qinzhou- Hangzhou metallogenetie belt together with the northeastern Jiangxi Province. Mineral occurrence and metal and non-metal mineral compositions from the samples in the Yinshan ore district in the Chun' an County of the northwestern Zhejiang Province are analyzed using the SEM and EPMA techniques, and then enrichment mechanism of metal elements (e.g. , silver, lead and zinc) and mineralization are discussed in this study. The polvmetallie ore deposit of silver, lead, zinc and copper in the Yinshan area, layered and layered-like distributed, mainly occurs in the fracture zone between the upper Lantian and Piyuancun formations, and the interface of the lithology boundary partly as well as that between the dolomitized limestone in the bottom of the Lantian Formation and conglomeratic mudstone in the Nantuo Formation. Two groups of metallic mineral assemblages are subdivided. One is pvrite- chaleopyrite-galena-sphalerite assemblage, located between the Lantian Formation and Piyuancun Formation, indicating a hydrothermal mineral group formed under a medium to low-temperature condition. The other is pvrrhotite-arsenopv rite -sphalerite assemblage, located between the bottom of Lantian and the Nantuo formations, recognized as a hydrothermal mineral group formed under the medium- Temperature condition. The gangue minerals in the area are such as quartz, calcite, chlorite and muscovite, particularly, clinopvroxene. According to a chemical study, elinopvroxene in the area has two types of hedenbergite and diopside, indicating an influence of strong hydrothermal process. The main metallic minerals are galena, sphalerite, pvrite, pvrrhotite, arsenopvrite, chalcopyrite; and the silver element is enriched mainly in the galena. There are granular and replacement remnant, disseminated and net-veined textures, and mass structure. We proposed a metallogenetie mechanism that the metallic elemental enriched sedimentary layer of the Lantian Formation can be as an ore source for the formation of the deposit; a Yanshanian felsic magmatism along a faulted zone provides not only hot to make the polvmetallie elements even more enriched, but some metallic fluids, and then the Yinshan ore deposit is formed along the lithological interface of the earth chemical barrier.

Abstract:Cuttings of garnet peridotite were collected between 603. 2 and 683. 5 m in the CCSD at Donghai. Minerals were separated by various methods and handpicked under a binocular microscope. The selected minerals were identified by SEM-EDS, microprobe, Laser Raman, and EDXD (Synchrontron X-ray Diffraction). A number of unusual minerals have been recognized from the cuttings, e.g., moissanite, w stite, native Fe, native Cr, native Ni, native Au, native Cu, native Al, taenite, kamacite, Ni-Fe-Cr alloy, Ni-Fe alloy, Fe-Cr alloy, Si-Fe alloy (Fe3 Si7), and Co-Ni alloy. Two grains of Fe2P alloy (barringerite), have also been found. They are spheroidal in shape, with diameters of about 200 μm, and they have identical hexagonal structures with cell parameters of a = 5. 877Å, c = 3.437Å, and a: c = 1:0.5848. They belong to space group P62m. This mineral, which is similar in structure and composition to artificial Fe2P (ICDD 83-2337), has previously only been found in meteorites. This is the first reported natural terrestrial occurrence of barringerite. Further study on its genesis and formational conditions is underway.
Chronology, Hf Isotopes, Geochemistry, and Petrogenesis of the Magmatic Rocks in the Shizishan Ore Field of Tongling, Anhui Province

Abstract:LA-ICPMS zircon U-Pb dating of intrusive rocks from the Shizishan ore field, Tongling, Anhui Province shows that the crystallization ages of Baimangshan pyroxene diorite, Shizishan and Dongguashan quartz diorite are 139±1.9, 138.0±1.7, and 138.4±1.7 Ma, respectively. These three intrusions are high-potassium, alkali-rich, meta-aluminous, and are characterized by enrichment of light rare earth elements and large-ion lithophile elements, depletion of heavy rare-earth elements (HREE) and high field strength elements, and slightly negative Eu anomalies. In-situ Hf analysis of zircon for these three intrusions shows large ranges of Hf isotope compositions: the ɛ Hf(t) values are ɛ Hf(t)= ∼3.3 to ∼14.4 for Baimangshan, ∼14.1 to ∼23.9 Dongguashan, and ∼14.7 to ∼26.9 for Shizishan. The ɛ Hf(t) values of both the Dongguashan and Shizishan quartz diorites are significantly lower than those of Baimangshan pyroxene diorite. Elemental geochemistry and in-situ zircon Hf isotope analyses indicate that the three intrusions were formed through mixing of granitic magma formed by partial melting of the lower crust and water-rich basic magma derived from the enriched lithospheric mantle. The Dongguashan and Shizishan quartz diorites involved greater crustal components than Baimangshan pyroxene diorite. The Dongguashan and Shizishan quartz diorites have geochemical features similar to the adakite, such as high Sr, low Y, and high Sr/Y ratios. Such geochemical features can be attributed to some fractional crystallization of apatite and sphene, and insignificant plagioclase fractional crystallization after magma mixing. These three intrusions are the products of complex crust-mantle interaction during the regional tectonic regime transition from compression to extension.

Abstract:The intermediate-felsic intrusive rocks show a close relationship with mineralization in the Jiurui ore district,howev-er,the studies of these rocks in the Dongleiwan deposit are relatively rare.In this study,we present a detailed study on zircon geochronology,mineral chemistry,whole rock geochemistry,and Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopes of both the intermediate-felsic intru-sive rocks and their mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs).LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating yields crystallization ages of 144.3-148.7 Ma for the felsic rocks and 146.4 - 147.1 Ma for the MMEs,indicating they are coeval.All the intrusive rocks from the Dongleiwan deposit are metaluminous with high Mg# (42.5-68.0,with an average of 56.0)and high contents of com-patible elements such as V,Cr,Co and Ni.The REE characteristics are LREE enriched and lack any significant Eu anomaly. The trace elements are characterized by enrichment of LILE and depletion of HFSE.The MMEs are characterized by micro-granular texture,and contain acicular apatites and K-feldspar phenocrysts.The Dongleiwan rock samples have a narrow Sr-Nd isotopic ratio range with initial 87 Sr/86 Sr ratios from 0.706 4 to 0.707 9,εNd (t )values from -5.80 to -3.31,and t 2DM (Nd) values from 1.2 to 1.4 Ga.The samples show radiogenic Pb isotopic ratios with values of 206 Pb/204 Pb(1 7.333 3 - 18.260 0), 207 Pb/204 Pb (1 5.5 13 5-1 5.621 0)and 208 Pb/204 Pb (37.404 1-38.395 4).The zircon Hf isotope analysis showsεHf (t )values of-1 5.9 to -3.6.These data suggest that the MMEs were probably produced by mixing of mafic and felsic magmas,and the mafic magma was derived from partial melting of delaminated lower crust and may have reacted with surrounded mantle perido-tites during its ascent.While the felsic intrusive rocks of this area have been formed by the upwelling of magma which have ex-perienced strong crust-mantle interaction after the delamination of lower crust into the asthenosphere.

Abstract:Four unusual varieties of Si-Fe alloys occur in ophiolite along the Yarlung Zangbo River. Podiform chromite deposits are distributed in the hurzburgite facies of the Luobusa ophiolite. The Si-Fe alloys are composed chemically of Fe 3Si 7, Fe 7Si 3, Fe 6Si 4, and Fe 4Ti 3Si 2P, and the associated minerals comprising Fe, FeO, SiO 2, Si and Mg silicates occur in chromitite. The intergrowth texture formed by 3 alloys indicate that these alloys have same genesis, and the texture developed in the Si-Fe alloys might be a product of chemical reaction between liquid iron and silicate on the boundary of mantle and core.
Sr-Nd-Pb and zircon Hf isotopic constraints on the petrogenesis of two types of early Cretaceous intrusive rocks in the Tongling ore-cluster region: Implications for Cu-Au polymetallic mineralization

Abstract:Early Cretaceous magmatic activities in the Tongling ore-cluster region of eastern China produced a series of igneous rocks, which can be divided into early-stage ore-bearing intrusions associated with large-scale Cu polymetallic mineralization, and late-stage intrusions that are generally ore-barren. Petrogeneses of these intrusive rocks and their relationship to mineralization are still controversial. To clarify these scientific issues, early-stage ore-bearing intrusive rocks (granodiorite from the Jinziwei deposit and granodiorite porphyry from the Yaojialing deposit) and late-stage ore-barren granodiorite dykes from the Jinziwei deposit are studied. Zircons from early-stage ore-bearing intrusions and late-stage ore-barren rocks yield U–Pb ages of 141–139 Ma, and 129 Ma, respectively, indicating that the gap between the two-stage magmatic events was approximately 10 Ma. The SiO2 contents of the two types of rocks are similar (62.15–68.11 wt% and 64.02–65.91 wt%, respectively), whereas their Sr/Y values (49.26–140.54 and 17.90–21.24, respectively) and Y contents (7.4–16.2 ppm and 20.2–24.0 ppm, respectively) are significantly different, suggesting that the former is adakite and the latter is non-adakite. Whole-rock Sr-Nd-Pb and zircon Hf isotopic compositions indicate that the early-stage ore-bearing intrusions were derived from partial melting of the subducted slab (oceanic crust with marine sediments), followed by the interaction of lithospheric mantle peridotite and the later incorporation of Middle-Upper Yangtze continental crust materials during magma ascent/emplacement. The late-stage ore-barren dykes evolved from the early-stage intermediate-basic magma in the Tongling region, which was originated from the enriched lithospheric mantle metasomatized by slab fluids/melts followed by the addition of a small amount of crustal materials. The zircon and apatite geochemical results show that high oxygen fugacity of the early-stage intrusion is a key factor in regional Cu-Au mineralization. Our study reveals the fact that magma with F-rich or Cl-rich characteristics directly controls the type of mineralization. Furthermore, the F-rich magma is favorable for Cu-Mo deposits, and on the other hand, the Cl-rich magma is favorable for Cu-Au-Zn deposits.

Abstract:The Jiaodong Peninsula is the largest gold concentration district in China and the third largest one in the world. It covers no >0.2% of China's total landmass yet accounts for 30% of the total national gold reserves with total proved resources near 5000 t Au. One wonders where all this gold comes from. Here we present detailed whole-rock element and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope, quartz H-O isotope and pyrite He-Ar isotope geochemical data for the Xiadian gold deposit, a large Jiaojia-type gold deposit in the Jiaodong district, which furnishes new constrains on the sources of ore-forming fluids and metals. The results indicate that the ore and alterated rock have much higher HREE (e.g. Yb and Y), HFSE (e.g. Nb, Ta, Zr and Hf) and transition elements (e.g. Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Co and Ni) than the host granites but similar to the lithospheric mantle-derived lamprophyres, suggesting an enriched lithospheric mantle origin. The H-O isotopes (delta DV-SMOW = -93.9 parts per thousand to -102.3 parts per thousand, delta O-18(H2O) = -0.2 parts per thousand to 1.6 parts per thousand) of fluid inclusions in quartzs collected from auriferous pyrite-sericite-quartz altered rocks are distinctly different from either primary magmatic water and metamorphic water or meteoric water in the Jiaodong district but similar to the local enriched mantle-derived fluids. The He-Ar isotopes [He-3/(4)/He = 0.58 x 10(-6) to 1.90 x 10(-6) (0.42-1.36 Ra), Ar-40/Ar-36 = 725-1358] of fluid inclusions in pyrites collected from auriferous pyrite-sericite-quartz altered rocks are also similar to the local enriched mantle-derived fluids. The ore and alterated rock have distinct Nd-Pb isotopic compositions either from the host Linglong granites or from the asthenosphere-derived mafic dikes but similar to the lithospheric mantle-derived mafic dikes. Their Sr isotopic compositions show a mix trend between the lithospheric mantle-derived mafic dikes and Neoarchaean basement. All the elemental and multiple isotopic features support a metallogenic model that the ore-forming fluids and metals were derived from the local previously enriched lithospheric mantle, and such deeply sourced fluids may have interacted with Neoarchaean basement along their flow path and mixed with a little meteoric water when they arrived high levels in the crust.
Geochemistry of minerals from Macaokuang peridotite in Rongcheng area,Shandong Province

Abstract:Located in Tengjiaji of Rongcheng area, Shandong Province, the Macaokuang peridotite lies in the northeastern part of the Sulu ultrahigh pressure metamorphic belt. The protolith of the peridotite is the residual mantle harzburgite, which underwent ultrahigh pressure and then granulite-amphibolite facies metamorphism. Trace and rare earth element abundances of olivine, orthopyroxene and amphibole in the Macaokuang mantle peridotite and the orthopyroxenite veins and amphibolite veins within the peridotite were analyzed, and the result shows that Co and Ni are high and mainly concentrated in olivine, but their contents are low in orthopyroxene and amphibole, suggesting that the bulk rock is enriched in Co and Ni due to the high proportion of olivine in the rock. Although it makes up only 3%~8% of the whole rock, the amphibole controls the contents and distribution patterns of trace and rare earth elements of the bulk rock with the exception of Co and Ni. Orthopyroxene and olivine have much lower trace and rare earth element abundances than amphibole, and the element distribution patterns of orthopyroxene and olivine are quite similar to the pattern of amphibole. Amphibole in orthopyroxenite veins and amphibolite veins is more enriched in trace and rare earth elements than that in peridotite. Geochemistry of the elements shows that peridotite must have experienced repeated metasomatic actions of at least such components as Co and Ni-rich fluids, LREE, Ba, Sr, Ta-rich and Th, U-extremely low silicate fluids and carbonic fluids. Fluid metasomatism occurred after UHP metamorphism at a shallow mantle depth. Olivine, orthopyroxene and amphibole in the peridotite together with the intruded veins are characterized by normal mantle oxygen isotopic ratios and show equilibrium each other. Meanwhile, the oxygen fugacity of the peridotite is +1.0~+2.0, falling in the normal continental mantle range, implying that the rock has not experienced metasomatic action of crustal fluids.

Abstract:Early Paleozoic alkaline mafic rocks hosting Fe-(Ti) deposits and intermediate rocks hosting Nb-REE deposits are widely exposed in the North Dabashan area of China; however, their petrogenesis and relationship with regional mineralization remain unclear. In this contribution, a case study of alkaline diorite and dolerite dykes located in the Laogao-Zhenping area of the North Dabashan region is presented, aiming to shed light on the genesis of their parental magmas. Zircon U-Pb dating of the dolerite yields concordia plots and shows a Silurian intrusion age of 433 ± 3 Ma, coinciding with the regional ca. 440–430 Ma alkaline magmatic event. The mafic dykes exhibit enrichment in HFSE and REE, along with positive εNd(t) values (+1.08 to + 4.53), consistent with geochemical signatures of ocean island basalts (OIB). The (Th/Nb)PM (0.55–0.86) and La/Sm (3.05–5.12) ratios show narrow variations, and a Nd-isotopic mixing model of the depleted mantle and average lower crust suggests insignificant involvement of crustal contamination (3 %–7%) during magma ascent. In addition, high Dy/Yb (1.85–3.30), Ba/Rb (19.69–67.26), and low Rb/Sr (0.01–0.07) ratios point to a garnet-facies amphibole lherzolite source for the parental magma. The clinopyroxene thermobarometer constrains the dolerite’s crystallization temperatures between 1093–1224 °C and pressures between 0.4 and 8.3 kbar, suggesting that the mafic alkaline magma ascended from the mantle and emplaced at different upper crustal levels. Fractional crystallization is proposed as a key contributor to regional Fe-(Ti) and Nb-(REE) mineralization, supported by (a) similar trace elemental and Nd isotopic signatures and (b) evolutionary trends in major elements from the alkaline dolerite-basalt, through the diorite-dioritic porphyrite, to the syenite-trachyte assemblages in the Ziyang-Zhushan area.
Texture, geochemistry, and geochronology of titanite and pyrite: Fingerprint of magmatic-hydrothermal fertile fluids in the Jiaodong Au province

Abstract:Abstract The Au mineralization in the giant Jiaodong Au province is enigmatic and difficult to fit current classic mineralization models, primarily because of uncertainties as to the sources of ore-forming fluids and metals. The ca. 120 Ma Au mineralization has been previously proposed to have occurred during a magmatic lull, which would negate a magmatic-hydrothermal genetic model. However, recent drilling has revealed a buried mineralized monzonite equivalent in age to the Au mineralization in the Linglong goldfield. Here, we present comprehensive textural, geochemical [LA-(MC)-ICP-MS trace element, Nd and S isotopes] and geochronological (LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating) analyses of titanite and pyrite from this previously unrecognized monzonite. Three types of titanite were distinguished, including magmatic Ttn1 and hydrothermal Ttn2 and Ttn3, which show indistinguishable U-Pb ages (120.7 ± 3.1 and 120.9 ± 2.6 Ma), REE patterns and Nd isotopes [εNd(t) = –14.7 to –12.9], implying that hydrothermal fluids were directly exsolved from the monzonitic magma, contemporaneous with the large-scale Au mineralization at ca. 120 Ma. The Nd isotopes of titanite potentially indicate a lower crustal source mixed with mantle materials for the monzonite. Four types of pyrite were analyzed, including magmatic Py1 from fresh biotite monzonite, hydrothermal Py2 from altered biotite monzonite, hydrothermal Py3 from quartz-pyrite veins with a monazite U-Pb age of 118.2 ± 4.6 Ma, and magmatic Py4 from mafic enclaves of the Gushan granite at ca.120 Ma. The δ34S values of magmatic Py1 and Py4 (+1.9 to +6.3‰, and +5.0 to +6.4‰, respectively) and hydrothermal Py2 and Py3 (+6.4 to +9.5‰ and +6.5 to +7.6‰, respectively) are consistent with sulfur isotopic fractionation between melt and fluid. Hydrothermal Py2 and Py3 also have higher Co, As, Ag, Sb, and Bi contents and submicrometer gold inclusions, implying that the magmatic-hydrothermal fluids were fertile for mineralization. This study highlights the importance of monzonite magmatism and exsolved fertile fluids in regional Au mineralization. Hydrous magmas at ca.120 Ma probably extracted Au efficiently from the lower crustal-mantle sources and released auriferous fluids at the late magmatic stage, leading to the formation of Au deposits in the Jiaodong province.

Abstract:The Zhimafang peridotite from the pre-pilot hole of the CCSDP (Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling Project) is composed of lerzolite, harzbergite, wehrlite and dunite with or without garnet. These rocks show the layering but without rhythmic character. The contact between the layers is transitional. Major, trace (including REE) and isotope analyses have been do on the samples from the hole. Al2O3 and CaO decrease with decrease of MgO showing very good correlativity. From garnet peridotite to garnert-free peridotite, these rocks become even more refractory and all of them are more refractory than pyrolite in major composition. REE show enriched LREE. In Spider diagram, the highly incompatible and moderate incompatible elements also show enriched characters. There is no correlation between refractory degree and enrichment of trace elements, which indicates decoupling between major and trace elements were caused by two different deep processes; these two processes might be previous partial melting in the upper mantle and subsequent matsomatism by mantle fluid rich in incompatible elements. Sr and Nd isotope compositions also have the enriched characteristics and variation ranges are large; the more refractory the rocks, the more enriched isotope compositions. Mineral O isotope has the typical mantle compositional character ranging from between + 4‰ to + 6‰, which indicates the source of metasomatic fluid was in the mantle itself. The inverse correlation between (Ce/Yb)N and εNd and positive correlation between Rb abundance and Sr isotope composition indicate that the sources of fluids enriched in Sr, Nd isotopes and highly incompatible elements were the same.

Abstract:Recent discoveries of UHP eclogites from the northern Dabie Complex (NDC) in central China provide an opportunity to improve our understanding of the tectonic setting of the NDC and exhumation mechanism of UHPM rocks. The petrology, geochemistry, Sr–Nd–O isotopic compositions and Sm–Nd isotopic chronology of some eclogites from the NDC were obtained in this study. The major elemental compositions and relatively low ɛNd (T) of about −10 for the eclogites suggest that the protoliths of most eclogites were ancient basaltic rocks developed in continental crust, and thus these eclogites were produced by subduction of the Yangtze continental crust. However, some of the eclogites within foliated peridotites with relatively high ɛNd (T) values up to +2.4 are interpreted as pieces of lithospheric mantle scraped off the overlying mantle by subducting continental crust and then subducted together into mantle depths. Therefore, the metamorphosed mafic-ultramafic belt containing eclogite and meta-peridotite blocks along the southern part of the Mozitan–Xiaotian fault zone may represent the tectonic melange produced by the subduction of the Yangtze continental crust.
Immiscibility of Carbonatitic and Alkaline Silicate Melts from an Evolved Ultramafic Magma: Titanite Geochronology and In-Situ Ti Nd Isotope Insights

Abstract:Carbonatites and alkaline rocks often exhibit a close spatial association with Nb and rare earth elements (REE) mineralization. Petrological and experimental studies suggest that carbonated and alkaline silicate melts can be formed directly through low-degree partial melting of a carbonate-bearing mantle. Alternatively, some propose that fractional crystallization followed by liquid immiscibility from mantle-derived magmas could be a viable model for the formation of carbonatites and alkaline rocks. In this study, samples from ultramafic to alkaline rocks and carbonatites in the Shangzhuang P-REE deposit, Western China are analyzed to investigate this issue. The complexes consist of biotite clinopyroxenite, fluorapatite-rich biotite clinopyroxenite, and calcite-K-feldsparamphibole-rich clinopyroxenite, interspersed with minor syenite and carbonatite dykes. These suites of rocks exhibit similar ages and Nd isotopic characteristics, indicating their derivation from a common magma source. Field, petrological, geochemical, and Ti isotopic investigations reveal the parental ultramafic melts (with high Mg-#, low HFSE, and chondritic delta Ti-49 values) undergo a differentiation process into carbonate- and alkaline-rich ultramafic silicate melts (enriched in REEs, HFSE and Fe). These carbon- and alkaline-rich melts then formed immiscible carbonatitic- (high REE and negative delta Ti-49 values of -1.78 to -0.49 %o) and alkaline silicate-melts (high Nb and delta Ti-49 values of +0.18 to +0.62 %o). The enrichment of REE and Nb in the system is attributed to magmatic crystallization differentiation and subsequent liquid immiscibility. This process resulted in the enrichment of REE in carbonatites, whereas alkaline rocks show a higher enrichment in Nb. This study provides a possible mechanism to explain the genetic linkage between carbonatites and alkaline rocks that is likely applicable to similar rock suites worldwide.
Transcrustal magmatic systems in NE China: Insights from Early Cretaceous metaluminous–peraluminous–peralkaline rock associations in the southern Great Xing'an Range

Abstract:The generation and evolution of crustal-scale magmatic systems are important in revealing the continental crust differentiation. In the Bayangeer-Aliwula area of Inner Mongolia, metaluminous–peraluminous–peralkaline rock assemblages provide a rare opportunity to evaluate Early Cretaceous magmatic systems. This study presents new geochemical data, including whole-rock and zircon geochemistry, zircon U–Pb dating, and Hf–O isotopic analysis of rocks formed between 132 and 121 Ma. The metaluminous rocks exhibit low SiO 2 (55.35–65.65 wt%), low Rb/Sr (0.08–0.24) and (La/Yb) N (4.88–7.58) ratios, and positive ε Hf (t) values (+4.9 to +8.7). These features, along with enrichment in large-ion lithophile elements and depletion in Nb and Ta, suggest formation via partial melting of fluid-metasomatised lithospheric mantle. By contrast, peraluminous rocks have high SiO 2 (69.37–80.58 wt%), a high differentiation index (DI = 88–95), and Fe-index (0.84–0.95), resembling highly fractionated I-type granites. They show high Rb/Sr (0.77–3.35) and (La/Yb) N (5.79–22.75) ratios, and positive ε Hf (t) values (+6.7 to +10.8), combined with the modelling results, indicating origin from partial melting of K-rich mafic lower crust followed by magma fractionation. Peralkaline rocks display typical ferroan A-type granite characteristics (Zr + Nb + Ce + Y = 906–4292 ppm; Fe-index = 0.96–0.99), with high SiO 2 (74.02–77.50 wt%), high Rb/Sr (6.17–121.38), and (La/Yb) N ratios (2.19–17.72), and positive ε Hf (t) values (+3.1 to +9.6). Zircon geochemistry characteristics suggest that peralkaline and peraluminous felsic melts are different batches extracted from the same magma reservoir. Further analysis, including hyperbola diagrams and zircon oxygen isotope compositions, suggests peralkaline magma formation through the mixing of altered oceanic crust fluids and peraluminous melts after melt extraction. During Early Cretaceous, the transcrustal magmatic system provides a reasonable explanation for the petrogenesis of various contemporaneous rocks in the study area in southern Great Xing'an Range.

Abstract:Most primary tin deposits are closely temporally and spatially related to peraluminous granites. These granites usually exhibit highly evolved geochemical characteristics that disguise their specific origin. This paper reports a study of whole-rock geochemistry and Sm–Nd isotopes, zircon U–Pb geochronology and Lu–Hf isotopes, and mineral chemistry of the Bozhushan granitic batholith in the Youjiang basin, South China. The Bozhushan batholith, producing the Bainiuchang large tin–polymetallic deposit, consists of metaluminous tin-barren monzogranites and peraluminous tin-bearing monzogranites. LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating suggests that the peraluminous rocks were emplaced during the Late Cretaceous (88.5 ± 0.7 Ma), which is largely consistent with the emplacement age of the metaluminous rocks. These granitic rocks have similar Nd-Hf isotopic compositions, supporting a common crustal source. Relative to the metaluminous monzogranites, the peraluminous tin-bearing rocks exhibit more evolved geochemical compositions with higher Si and lower Ca, P, Mg, Fe, and Ti and stronger depletion in Eu, Ba, Sr, Zr, Hf, and rare earth elements. These differing geochemical characteristics can be explained by the differentiation of biotite, plagioclase, zircon and apatite. The extremely low Nb/Ta (<5) and K/Rb (<150) ratios of the peraluminous rocks indicate a fluid exsolution process. We suggest that the peraluminous tin-bearing rocks were derived by magmatic differentiation and fluid exsolution of the metaluminous melts. Combining our new results with previous studies, we conclude that on a worldwide scale some peraluminous granites related to tin mineralization are derived by magmatic differentiation and fluid exsolution of metaluminous melts rather than from metasedimentary rocks.

Abstract:Mafic magmatic differentiation is an important mechanism to drive Fe-Ti enrichments in melt and final formation of layered Fe-Ti-(V) oxide deposits, but how the differentiation operates and how the state of magmatic reservoirs controls differential metallogenic potential are unclear. The Xialan magmatic complex in northern Guangdong Province is the only complex hosting layered Fe-Ti (V) deposits in Southeast China and the formation of such oxide deposits is not addressed in detail. Here, we present an integrated study of geochronology, mineral geochemistry, whole-rock major and trace elements, as well as Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes, on the mafic rocks associated with the Xialan layered Fe-Ti (V) oxide deposits. The investigated mafic rocks are cogenetic and can be classified into three types according to field and textural features: diabase, Fe-Ti rich gabbro, and Fe-Ti barren gabbro. Based on petrographic observation and major and trace element geochemistry, the gabbros and diabases represent cumulates and residual melts, respectively. However, the Fe-Ti rich gabbros show different Nd isotopes from the other rocks, which indicates an open-system differentiation for the Xialan parental magma. A two-stage evolution process for the Xialan parental magma before the final crystallization fractionation to form the oxide deposits is further proposed based on MELTs modeling results and the characters of mineral assemblages. At the early stage, the magmas started differentiation with 0.5 wt.% initial H 2 O content and moderate oxygen fugacity (△FMQ = ca. +0.5 – +1.5) at 5 kbar and generated Fe-Ti enriched melts. At the later stage, the Fe-Ti rich melts gradually evolved to a much higher H 2 O content (> 3 wt.%), which stabilized the Fe-Ti oxides and hornblendes. Wall-rock assimilation during the late-stage magma evolution is suggested to be the key factor to elevate the H 2 O contents and oxygen fugacity of the magma which finally produced the layered Fe-Ti oxides. As such, this study demonstrates that open-system differentiation of mafic magmas can play a key role in the final generation of some hornblende-bearing layered Fe-Ti oxide deposits.

Abstract:The Zhou'an ultramafic intrusion in Henan Province is mainly composed of peridotite and hosts a large Ni-Cu-PGE deposit.The mineralization occurs in the rim of the lense-like intrusive body.Rare earth elements of the ultramafic rocks are characterized by enriched LREE with La/Sm_N=1.3～4.7 and fractionated LREE and HREE with Sm/Yb_N=1.9～4.4.Primitive mantle-normalized trace element patterns decline to right,with weakly negative Nb-anomaly.Ni and Cu contents of the host peridotites range from 70 to 2120×10~(-6) and from 15 to 1056×10~(-6),respectivly,whereas Ni and Cu contents of ores range from 2592 to 6549×10~(-6) and from 1147 to 3239×10~(-6),respectively.The Ni/Cu ratios of ores are between 2.0 and 2.3,which are lower than those in sulfide-barren rocks(5 to 83).The concentrations of PGEs are highly variable in the ores with Pd/Ir ratios ranging from 1.4 to 21 and Pt/Ir ratios from 2.4 to 22.We propose that the Zhou'an ultramafic intrusion is a structurally emplaced segment of lithospheric mantle, and mineralization around the rim of the intrusion can be attributed to hydrothermal alteration.
