Abstract:Leaf senescence happen in the late stage of leaf development.During the process of leaf senescence,chlorophyll and other macromolecules are degraded,photosynthetic capacity declines and nutrients of the degraded products tissues are transferred from senescing to young tissues and reproductive organs.Leaf senescence is influenced by the leaf developmental stage and environmental stresses,like dark,drought,salinity,low temperature,ozone,nutrient deficiency and pathogen infection,etc.Reactive oxygen species(ROS) accumulates during leaf senescence with reduced antioxidase activities(SOD,CAT and APX).Unfavorable conditions might accelerate and lead to a premature senescence,inducing expression of senescence associated genes(SAGs),speeding up the plant maturation and decreasing the crop yield.The measures utilized in production practice,i.e.nitrogen management,plant intensity,and chemical regulator are involved in the process.In this review,we summarized the advancement in this field.

Abstract:The studies showed that 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate(ACC),1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase(ACO),lipoxyenase(LOX)had participated in the regulation of senescence in fruits and vegetables,and superoxide reductase(SOD),peroxidise(POD),catalase(CAT)as antioxidase influenced the process of ripening and senescence on fruits and vegetables. It was briefly reviewed the research progress of ACC,ACO,LOX,SOD,CAT and POD in fruits and vegetables in the postharvest senescence in this article.

Abstract:Phytochemicals are widely present in food and have been confirmed to be bioactive, thereby contributing to human health. However, some phytochemicals are sensitive to light owing to their structures and may suffer from photodegradation, especially when sensitizers exist, resulting in sensory quality change, nutrient loss in food, and even the formation of toxic compounds. The photooxidation of phytochemicals occurs through three different mechanisms: (1) by directly absorbing luminous energy, (2) with triplet-excited state sensitizers through electron transfer or proton transfer (type I photooxidation), and (3) with singlet oxygen produced byO(2) (type II photooxidation). On the basis of these mechanisms, adequate antioxidants can be added to quench the triple-excited state sensitizers or singlet oxygen to protect against the photooxidation of phytochemicals in food. Here, we summarize and discuss the possible pathways and products of the photooxidation of phytochemicals that have been reported and the relationships between structures and photooxidation. We also propose some control measures, with special attention paid to the potential abilities of phytochemicals in the prevention of food photooxidation.

Abstract:Exposure to a variety of environmental factors such as salinity, drought, metal toxicity, extreme temperature, air pollutants, ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation, pesticides, and pathogen infection leads to subject oxidative stress in plants, which in turn affects multiple biological processes via reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. ROS include hydroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen, and hydrogen peroxide in the plant cells and activates signaling pathways leading to some changes of physiological, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms in cellular metabolism. Excessive ROS, however, cause oxidative stress, a state of imbalance between the production of ROS and the neutralization of free radicals by antioxidants, resulting in damage of cellular components including lipids, nucleic acids, metabolites, and proteins, which finally leads to the death of cells in plants. Thus, maintaining a physiological level of ROS is crucial for aerobic organisms, which relies on the combined operation of enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants. In order to improve plants’ tolerance towards the harsh environment, it is vital to reinforce the comprehension of oxidative stress and antioxidant systems. In this review, recent findings on the metabolism of ROS as well as the antioxidative defense machinery are briefly updated. The latest findings on differential regulation of antioxidants at multiple levels under adverse environment are also discussed here.

Abstract:Plant can produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) in normal physiological activity. However, ROS can increase dramatically by environmental stress. The increase may break the ROS balance in the plant. To control ROS levels in plants, an antioxidant system is needed to protect the cell. This paper introduced the types and functions of antioxidant enzymes, and studied the effects of plant and environmental factors on the activities of antioxidant enzymes. At last, the paper discussed the research hot fields of the effect of environmental stress on antioxidant enzymes, and gave the research strategies to the problems which happened in the studies.

Abstract:We investigated the frequency and subset origin of circulating factor VIII (FVIII)-specific CD4 T cells in healthy donors. Total CD4 T cells and purified CD4 T-cell subsets were stimulated with FVIII-loaded autologous dendritic cells and challenged for specificity in interferon-γ enzyme-linked immunospots. The number of specific T-cell lines allowed estimation of the frequency of T cells circulating in the blood of the donors. All the 16 healthy donors generated strong in vitro T-cell responses, leading to the generation of 154 FVIII-specific T-cell lines. The mean frequency of FVIII-specific CD4 T cells in healthy donors was similar to that of T cells specific for foreign antigens and greater than that of T cells specific for known immunogenic therapeutic proteins. Normal levels of endogenous FVIII in healthy donors therefore do not prevent a significant escape of FVIII-specific CD4 T cells from negative thymic selection. FVIII-specific T cells mainly originated from both the naïve and central memory cell subsets, but their frequencies remained low as compared with those of cells specific for foreign antigens in immunized donors. The observation of a spontaneous generation of FVIII-specific memory T cells without a global expansion suggests peculiar peripheral tolerance mechanisms to FVIII in healthy donors.

Abstract:The senescence of fruit is related to the active oxygen metabolism and membrane lipid peroxidation. Active oxygen and free radicals are effectively cleared away by some scavengers of free radicals-SOD,POD and CAT,while maintain the balance of active oxygen in fruit and decrease membrane lipid peroxidation and MDA accumulation contents.Activities of SOD,POD,CAT are seemed as the indices deciding the storage life of fruit and the marks of fruit ripening.During storage periods,the activities of SOD,POD and CAT cause to change as well as show different tendency among the different varieties. The activities of SOD,POD and CAT are influenced by storage temperatures,gas conditions,vibration stress,cold shock,heat shock and coating treatments, thereby, influence the process of ripening and senescence in fruit.

Abstract:Iron has a pivotal and dual role in free radical chemistry in all organisms. On the one hand, free Fe can participate in Fenton reactions and catalyze (‘catalytic Fe’) the generation of hydroxyl radical and other toxic oxygen species. On the other hand, Fe is a constituent of the antioxidant enzymes catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol peroxidase, and ferro-superoxide dismutase. Protein Fe is Fenton inactive but can be released from proteins upon attack by activated oxygen. Healthy, unstressed plants avoid the interaction of catalytic Fe and peroxides by disposing of Fe in vacuoles and apoplast, by sequestering Fe in ferritin, and by having high levels of antioxidant enzymes and metabolites in most subcellular compartments. However, when plants are exposed to a variety of adverse conditions, including chilling, high light, drought and paraquat, oxidative stress ensues due primarily to the decrease in antioxidant defenses but also to the increase in free radical production mediated by catalytic Fe. The latter accumulates in many stressed plant tissues. Oxidative stress may lead to metabolic dysfunction and ultimately to plant cell death, so it needs to be estimated conveniently by quantifying the oxidation products of lipids (malondialdehyde and other cytotoxic aldehydes), proteins (total carbonyls, methionine sulfoxide, 2-oxohistidine), and DNA (8-hydroxyguanine, 5-hydroxycytosine). Protein oxidation appears to be a more sensitive and precocious marker than is lipid peroxidation, and DNA damage may also prove to be a useful marker for stress studies in plants.

Abstract:The relationship between leaf senescence and the activities of protective enzymes was studied through comparion of a xanthan rice mutant HuangyuB with its wild type parent Longtefu B.During 5～25 days after flowering,compared to the wild type the decreases in the contents of chlorophyll and protein,and increases in the content of malondialdehyde(MDA) were significantly slower in the mutant.The activities of three protective enzymes,superoxide dismutase(SOD),peroxidase(POD) and catalase(CAT),were relatively stable in the mutant,indicating the stronger ability in removing free radicals and active oxygen in HuangyuB than the wild type.The criterion of rice senescence was also discussed.

Abstract:Nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) are gradually becoming established as critical regulators in plants under physiological and stressful conditions. Strong spatiotemporal correlations in their production and distribution have been identified in various plant biological processes. In this context, NO and H2O2 act synergistically or antagonistically as signals or stress promoters depending on their respective concentrations, engaging in processes such as the hypersensitive response, stomatal movement, and abiotic stress responses. Moreover, proteins identified as potential targets of NO-based modifications include a number of enzymes related to H2O2 metabolism, reinforcing their cross-talk. In this review, several processes of well-characterized functional interplay between H2O2 and NO are discussed with respect to the most recent reported evidence on hypersensitive response-induced programmed cell death, stomatal movement, and plant responses to adverse conditions and, where known, the molecular mechanisms and factors underpinning their cross-talk.

Abstract:Reactive oxygen species (ROS, partial reduction or derivatives of free radicals) are highly reactive, dangerous and can cause oxidative cell death. In addition to their role as toxic by-products of aerobic metabolism, ROS play a role in the control and regulation of biological processes such as growth, the cell cycle, programmed cell death, hormone signaling, biotic and abiotic stress reactions and development. ROS always arise in plants as a by-product of several metabolic processes that are located in different cell compartments, or as a result of the inevitable escape of electrons to oxygen from the electron transport activities of chloroplasts, mitochondria and plasma membranes. These reactive species are formed in chloroplasts, mitochondria, plasma membranes, peroxisomes, apoplasts, the endoplasmic reticulum and cell walls. The action of many non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidants present in tissues is required for efficient scavenging of ROS generated during various environmental stressors. The current review provides an in-depth look at the fate of ROS in plants, a beneficial role in managing stress and other irregularities. The production sites are also explained with their negative effects. In addition, the biochemical properties and sources of ROS generation, capture systems, the influence of ROS on cell biochemistry and the crosstalk of ROS with other signaling molecules/pathways are discussed.

Abstract:Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are signaling molecules that regulate many biological processes in plants. However, excess ROS induced by biotic and abiotic stresses can destroy biological macromolecules and cause oxidative damage to plants. As the global environment continues to deteriorate, plants inevitably experience abiotic stress. Therefore, in-depth exploration of ROS metabolism and an improved understanding of its regulatory mechanisms are of great importance for regulating cultivated plant growth and developing cultivars that are resilient to abiotic stresses. This review presents current research on the generation and scavenging of ROS in plants and summarizes recent progress in elucidating transcription factor-mediated regulation of ROS metabolism. Most importantly, the effects of applying exogenous substances on ROS metabolism and the potential regulatory mechanisms at play under abiotic stress are summarized. Given the important role of ROS in plants and other organisms, our findings provide insights for optimizing cultivation patterns and for improving plant stress tolerance and growth regulation.

Abstract:This article proposes a strategic framework or road map for sustainable m-health. The drivers and critical success factors of this framework are identified from the literature and a survey of the views of senior strategists in the New Zealand health sector. The success factors are associated with key tasks in the framework that identify suitable applications, channel development activity, and confirm activity by continued support of innovation whilst moving successful applications into the mainstream. The two most important outcomes from the research are that m-health has a crucial, even inevitable, role to play in future healthcare, and the development and exploitation of m-health demands a top-down strategy or framework to match and encourage bottom-up innovation by healthcare practioners. Without such a strategy to guide (but not direct) innovation, many otherwise valuable advances will not be sustainable and resources will be wasted on questionable applications that will slow development and reduce credibility.

Abstract:Abstract Main conclusion Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced oxidative stress results in low success or even total failure of cryopreservation. Better understanding of how the plant establishes resistance/tolerance to ROS-induced oxidative stress facilitates developments of robust cryopreservation procedures. Abstract Cryopreservation provides a safe and efficient strategy for long-term preservation of plant genetic resources. ROS-induced oxidative stress caused damage to cells and reduced the ability of the plant to survive following cryopreservation, eventually resulting in low success or even total failure. This paper provides updated and comprehensive information obtained in the past decade, including the following: (1) ROS generations and adaptive responses of antioxidant systems during cryopreservation; (2) expressions of oxidative stress-associated genes and proteins during cryopreservation; (3) ROS-triggered programmed cell death (PCD) during cryopreservation; and (4) exogenous applications of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants in improving success of cryopreservation. Prospects for further studies are proposed. The goal of the present study was to facilitate better understanding of the mechanisms by which the plant establishes resistance/tolerance to oxidative stress during cryopreservation and promote further studies toward the developments of robust cryopreservation procedures and wider application of plant cryobiotechnology.

Abstract:Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an essential role in the regulation of seed dormancy, germination, and deterioration in plants. The low level of ROS as signaling particles promotes dormancy release and triggers seed germination. Excessive ROS accumulation causes seed deterioration during seed storage. Maintaining ROS homeostasis plays a central role in the regulation of seed dormancy, germination, and deterioration in crops. This study highlights the current advances in the regulation of ROS homeostasis in dry and hydrated seeds of crops. The research progress in the crosstalk between ROS and hormones involved in the regulation of seed dormancy and germination in crops is mainly summarized. The current understandings of ROS-induced seed deterioration are reviewed. These understandings of ROS-dependent regulation on seed dormancy, germination, and deterioration contribute to the improvement of seed quality of crops in the future.

Abstract:Leaf senescence, the final stage of leaf development, is one of the adaptive mechanisms formed by plants over a long period of evolution. Leaf senescence is accompanied by various changes in cell structure, physiological metabolism, and gene expressions. This process is controlled by a variety of internal and external factors. Meanwhile, the genes and plant hormones involved in leaf aging affect the quality, yield and stress resistance in horticultural plants. Leaf senescence mediated by plant hormones affected plant quality at both pre-harvest and post-harvest stages. Exogenous plant growth regulators or plant hormone inhibitors has been applied to delay leaf senescence. Modification of related gene expression by over-expression or antisense inhibition could delay or accelerate leaf senescence, and thus influence quality. Environmental factors such as light, temperature and water status also trigger or delay leaf senescence. Delaying leaf senescence could increase chloroplast lifespan and photosynthesis and thus improve source strength, leading to enhanced yield. Accelerating leaf senescence promotes nutrient redistribution from old leaves into young leaves, and may raise yield under certain circumstances. Many genes and transcriptional factors involved in leaf senescence are associated with responses to abiotic and biotic stresses. WRKY transcriptional factors play a vital role in this process and they could interact with JA signalling. This review summarized how genes, plant hormones and environmental factors affect the quality, yield. Besides, the regulation of leaf senescence holds great promise to improving the resistance to plant biotic and abiotic stresses.
