Abstract:Abstract Gibberellin (GA), auxin (IAA) and brassinosteroid (BR) are indispensable in the process of plant growth and development. Currently, research on the regulatory mechanism of phytohormones in banana dwarfism is mainly focused on GA, and few studies are focused on IAA and BR. In this study, we measured the contents of endogenous GA, IAA and BR and compared the transcriptomes of wild-type Williams banana and its dwarf mutant across five successive growth periods. We investigated the relationship between hormones and banana dwarfism and explored differential gene expression through transcriptome analysis, thus revealing the possible metabolic regulatory mechanism. We inferred a complex regulatory network of banana dwarfing. In terms of endogenous hormone levels, GA and IAA had significant effects on banana dwarfing, while BR had little effect. The key gene in GA biosynthesis of is GA2ox , and the key genes in IAA biosynthesis are TDC and YUCCA . The differential expression of these genes might be the main factor affecting hormone levels and plant height. In terms of hormone signal transduction, DELLA and AUX/IAA repressor proteins were the core regulators of GA and IAA, respectively. They inhibited the process of signal transduction and had feedback regulation on hormone levels. Finally, the transporter protein PIN, AUX1/LAX protein family and ABCB subfamily played supplementary roles in the transport of IAA. These results provide new insights into GA and IAA regulation of banana growth and a reliable foundation for the improvement of dwarf varieties.

Abstract:Stomata provide the main route for gas exchange between the plant and the environment, which di-rectly affects transpiration and photosynthesis. Stomatal development is under the control of transcription fac-tors regulated by many peptide ligands and transmembrane receptors. Recent researches identify that auxin is a novel regulator during stomatal development, especially in cellular differentiation. This review summarizes the latest progress of plant stomatal development mechanism, and discusses how hormones and environmental fac-tors established signaling network to control cell-fate speciifcation, cell division and differentiation within the stomatal cell lineage. Furthermore, we also put forward some questions to be answered in the future.

Abstract:Brassinosteroids (BRs) are essential regulators of plant architecture. Understanding how BRs control plant height and leaf angle would facilitate development of new plant type varieties by biotechnology. A number of mutants involved in BR biosynthesis have been isolated but many of them lack detailed genetic analysis. Here, we report the isolation and characterization of a severe dwarf mutant, chromosome segment deleted dwarf 1 (csdd1), which was deficient in BR biosynthesis in rice.We isolated the mutant by screening a tissue culture-derived population, cloned the gene by mapping, and confirmed its function by complementary and RNAi experiments, combined with physiological and chemical analysis.We showed that the severe dwarf phenotype was caused by a complete deletion of a cytochrome P450 gene, CYP90D2/D2, which was further confirmed in two independent T-DNA insertion lines in different genetic backgrounds and by RNA interference. Our chemical analysis suggested that CYP90D2/D2 might catalyze C-3 dehydrogenation step in BR biosynthesis.We have demonstrated that the CYP90D2/D2 gene plays a more important role than previously reported. Allelic mutations of CYP90D2/D2 confer varying degrees of dwarfism and leaf angle, thus providing useful information for molecular breeding in grain crop plants.

Abstract:Many of the semi-dwarf but high-yielding crop varieties that were developed during Green Revolution are defective in gibberellin biosynthesis or unresponsive to gibberellin (Peng et al., 1999). Of the other kinds of plant hormones, brassinosteroids (BRs) seem to be among the most useful for controlling crop productivity –BR mutants can also be dwarfs and over-expression lines can be high yielding (Choe et al., 2001; Mori et al., 2002; Sakamoto et al., 2006).

Abstract:Phytohormones are signaling molecules that control plant growth and development. Recent studies revealed that non-coding small RNAs play critical roles in plant development and stress responses via phytohormone signaling pathways. In this review, we summarize the present knowledge on the microRNAs (miRNAs) and secondary short interfering RNAs (siRNAs) involved in phytohormone signaling pathways, which include auxin, gibberellic acid, brassinosteroid and abscisic acid pathways. We also discuss their possible implications in phytohormone crosstalk during specific developmental processes.
Effects of exogenously applied hormones on seedling elongation and content of endogenous GA3 in a dwarf mutatant (Brassica napus L. )

Abstract:Effects of exogenous gibberellin(GA3),auxin(IAA)and brassinosteroids(BRs) application on early seedling growth of a Brassica napus dwarf mutant,namely 'DDF-1',was studied.The results showed that proper exogenous GA3(7 mg/L)applied could partially rescued the hypocotyl elongation of the dwarf,but no significant differences made by IAA and BRs at any levels of application.Furthermore,no interaction effects of GA3,IAA and BR on the elongation of the seedling hypocotyl were detected by orthogonal test of these hormones.Vertical section of hypocotyls of the dwarf indicated a reduction for the cell length in comparison with the wild type,which may lead to the shorter hypocotyl of the mutant.Endogenous GA3 content, determined by ELISA(enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay),showed higher in the dwarf than that in the wild type,and lower than that in the exogenous GA3 treated dwarf hypocotyl.The hypothesis,suggesting that the dwarf mutant was GA insensitive and controlled by mutated gene(s) in gibberellins biosynthesis pathway,was discussed.

Abstract:Biotic and abiotic stresses, especially heavy metal toxicity, are becoming a big problem in agriculture, which pose serious threats to crop production. Plant hormones have recently been used to develop stress tolerance in a variety of plants. Brassinosteroids (BRs) are the sixth class of plant steroid hormones, with pleiotropic effects on plants. Exogenous application of BRs to boost plant tolerance mechanisms to various stresses has been a major research focus. Numerous studies have revealed the role of these steroidal hormones in the up-regulation of stress-related resistance genes, as well as their interactions with other metabolic pathways. BRs interact with other phytohormones such as auxin, cytokinin, ethylene, gibberellin, jasmonic acid, abscisic acid, salicylic acid, and polyamines to regulate a variety of physiological and developmental processes in plants. BRs regulate expressions of many BR-inducible genes by activating the brassinazole-resistant 1 (BZR1)/BRI1-EMS suppressor 1 (BES1) complex. Moreover, to improve plant development under a variety of stresses, BRs regulate antioxidant enzyme activity, chlorophyll concentration, photosynthetic capability, and glucose metabolism. This review will provide insights into the mechanistic role and actions of brassinosteroids in plants in response to various stresses.

Abstract:Auxin, cytokinin, and abscisic acid (ABA) are important plant hormones that regulate many growth and developmental processes. In recent years, a number of genes involved in the metabolic and signaling pathways for auxin, cytokinin and ABA have been cloned and characterized. With organ- and tissue-specific or conditionally active gene promoters, it has become possible to manipulate concentrations of plant hormones in planta to create commercially desirable traits. Seedless fruit production and the extension of shelf life of green produce and ornamental plants are two successful examples of manipulating concentrations of these hormones in planta. In this review, we will focus our discussion on the effects of the over- or under-expression of genes involved in the biosynthetic and catabolic pathways of these hormones with an emphasis on their potential applications in ornamental crops. Abstract:Phytohormones regulate numerous important biological processes in plant development and biotic/abiotic stress response cascades. More than 50 and 100 years have passed since the initial discoveries of the phytohormones abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellins (GA), respectively. Over the past several decades, numerous elegant studies have demonstrated that ABA and GA antagonistically regulate many plant developmental processes, including seed maturation, seed dormancy and germination, root initiation, hypocotyl and stem elongation, and floral transition. Furthermore, as a well-established stress hormone, ABA plays a key role in plant responses to abiotic stresses, such as drought, flooding, salinity and low temperature. Interestingly, recent evidence revealed that GA are also involved in plant response to adverse environmental conditions. Consequently, the complex crosstalk networks between ABA and GA, mediated by diverse key regulators, have been extensively investigated and documented. In this updated mini-review, we summarize the most recent advances in our understanding of the antagonistically regulatory roles of ABA and GA in different stages of plant development and in various plant-environment interactions, focusing on the crosstalk between ABA and GA at the levels of phytohormone metabolism and signal transduction.

Abstract:AbstractGlobal warming has great impacts on plant growth and development, as well as ecological distribution. Plants constantly perceive environmental temperatures and adjust their growth and development programs accordingly to cope with the environment under non-lethal warm temperature conditions. Plant hormones are endogenous bioactive chemicals that play central roles in plant growth, developmental, and responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. In this review, we summarize the important roles of plant hormones, including auxin, brassinosteroids (BRs), Gibberellins (GAs), ethylene (ET), and jasmonates (JAs), in regulating plant growth under warm temperature conditions. This provides a picture on how plants sense and transduce the warm temperature signals to regulate downstream gene expression for controlling plant growth under warm temperature conditions via hormone biosynthesis and signaling pathways.

Abstract:To adapt to fluctuations in light intensity, temperatures, and water/nutrient availability, plants have to dynamically and flexibly adjust their metabolism and growth processes. Specifically, hormone synthesis and signal transduction promptly respond to environmental stimuli. Understanding the mechanisms by which plants adapt to their environment is a hot spot of plant biology research. In this editorial, we provide a summary of recent advances in the roles and underlying mechanisms of abscisic acid (ABA) in coping with various stresses. Additionally, we highlight the functions of newly discovered hormones such as strigolactone. Furthermore, we emphasize future research directions aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of how plants maintain cellular homeostasis with the goal of improving crop yield in the background of global change.

Abstract:Flowering is the adaptability of plants in response to the environment, which is regulated by the complex flowering control network formed by a variety of exogenous and endogenous signals. Plant hormones, the most important endogenous signal participants, play important roles in the process of plant flowering. Recent reports reveal the pivotal roles of hormones in the epigenetic regulation and flowering promotion pathway. In addition, synergistic or antagonistic interaction has been observed among many hormones. Numerous hormones have been found to be involved in the regulation of the multiple flowering development regulation and signaling pathways mediated by DELLA protein in the gibberellin (GA) pathway. In this review, we summarize the recent advances ofthe flowering mechanisms related to GA pathway and discuss the effects of abscisic acid (ABA), auxin (IAA), cytokinin (CTK), salicylic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA), and ethylene (ET) on flowering, including their cross-regulation with DELLA, miRNAs, and transcription factor (TFs). This review provides a reference for further comprehensive analysis of the hormone-regulated network of plant flower formation.

Abstract:Plant hormones regulate many aspects of plant growth, development, and response to biotic and abiotic stress. Much research has gone into our understanding of individual plant hormones, focusing primarily on their mechanisms of action and the processes that they regulate. However, recent research has begun to focus on a more complex problem; how various plant hormones work together to regulate growth and developmental processes. In this review, we focus on two phytohormones, abscisic acid (ABA) and auxin. We begin with brief overviews of the hormones individually, followed by in depth analyses of interactions between auxin and ABA, focusing on interactions in individual tissues and how these interactions are occurring where possible. Finally, we end with a brief discussion and future prospects for the field.

Abstract:Plants synthesize various hormones in response to environmental cues and developmental signals to ensure their proper growth and development. Elucidation of the molecular mechanisms by which plant hormones control growth and development contributes to our understanding of fundamental plant biology and provides tools to improve crops. Because of their critical roles in plant growth and development, plant hormones have been studied extensively since the early days of plant biology. Indeed, much progress has been achieved in the past decade. Receptors for all of the classic plant hormones including auxin, abscisic acid (ABA), brassinolide (BL), cytokinin (CK), ethylene, jasmonate (JA), and gibberellin (GA) have been identified. However, the detailed mechanisms of how plant hormones modulate plant growth and development are far from completely understood. Hormone functions are regulated at the levels of synthesis, degradation, transport, and signaling. Moreover, plant hormones often display crosstalk with other hormones, environmental signals such as light, and other pathways. Articles in this special issue reflect the complexity of plant hormones. The following selected expert reviews and research papers update the current status of plant hormone research while contextualizing them with some historic perspectives. A main point presented in several papers is that crosstalk among plant hormones is a common theme and that crosstalk is important for many biological processes. An et al. (2011) detailed the interactions between SA and other classic hormones including auxin, ethylene, JA, ABA, and GA. The interaction between SA and auxin is particularly intriguing because it sheds light on the mechanisms that allow either plants or pathogens get an upper hand in the immunological arms race by modulating the two hormones. The SA- and auxin interaction appears to occur at the level of hormone conjugation and signal transduction. The review article by Hoffmann et al. (2011) highlights the crosstalk between auxin and JA, which is puzzling because the two hormones often have antagonistic effects. Hoffmann et al. (2011) used JA/auxin crosstalk as an example to discuss three categories of crosstalks: direct crosstalk, indirect crosstalk, and co-regulation. In addition, it is worth noting that crosstalk is not limited to hormones. Skylar et al. (2011) discussed the roles of crosstalk between cytokinin and sugar in meristem proliferation. Meanwhile, in the research article by Mai et al. (2011), auxin is linked to the flowering time pathway. Two review articles summarized the recent exciting progress in BL signaling and ABA signaling. Great progress has been made in elucidating the signal transduction mechanisms of BL, which is clearly described by Ye et al. (2011). BL binds its receptor at the cell surface and eventually regulates gene expression in the nucleus. A prominent feature of BL signaling is the involvement of at least three protein kinases and several phosphatases. Guo et al. (2011) elegantly discussed the recent findings in ABA signaling, a field that has generated many confusions as five putative ABA receptors have been identified. The expert review by Guo et al. (2011) clarified some of the confusions and provided a better understanding of the ABA signaling mechanism. Lastly, Zhang et al. (2011) presented evidence to show that transcription factor WOX1 is possibly involved in the regulation of shoot apical meristem (SAM) development by interacting with SAMDC1, a biosynthesis enzyme for polyamines. This interesting work raised the possibility that polyamines, a type of potential phytohormones, are involved in SAM development. Plant hormones are essential for plant growth and development. We hope that the articles in this special issue will allow readers to gain a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms through which various phytohormones interact to control plant growth and behavior.
Regulatory mechanism of plant hormones on seed dormancy and germination (review).

Abstract:Seed dormancy and germination are complex adaptive traits of plants influenced by a great number of genes and environmental factors.Although the utilization of quantity genetics methods(such as QTL analysis) and mutant approaches have made great development for dormancy and germination,the detailed mechanisms of dormancy and germination are not yet fully reported.Hormone,a factor to initiate seed germination,plays a key role in the regulation of seed dormancy and germination.Therefore,the relation between hormones and both germination and dormancy continues to be a research focus of seed physiology and biochemistry.With advancing understanding of the molecular biology and the discovery of a large number of mutants,regulatory mechanisms for a single hormone and interactions among hormones during seed dormancy and germination processes are better known.However,little knowledge about key points of networks for different hormones is known.This paper will focus on the functions of abscisic acid(ABA),gibberellin(GA),ethylene(ETH),brassinosteroids(BR) and other hormones during seed dormancy and germination progress,and further discusses the signaling relationship among these four hormones.

Abstract:Overall growth and development of a plant is regulated by complex interactions among various hormones, which is critical at different developmental stages. Some of the key aspects of plant growth include seed development, germination and plant survival under unfavorable conditions. Two of the key phytohormones regulating the associated physiological processes are gibberellins (GA) and abscisic acid (ABA). GAs participate in numerous developmental processes, including, seed development and seed germination, seedling growth, root proliferation, determination of leaf size and shape, flower induction and development, pollination and fruit expansion. Despite the association with abiotic stresses, ABA is essential for normal plant growth and development. It plays a critical role in different abiotic stresses by regulating various downstream ABA-dependent stress responses. Plants maintain a balance between GA and ABA levels constantly throughout the developmental processes at different tissues and organs, including under unfavorable environmental or physiological conditions. Here, we will review the literature on how GA and ABA control different stages of plant development, with focus on seed germination and selected abiotic stresses. The possible crosstalk of ABA and GA in specific events of the above processes will also be discussed, with emphasis on downstream stress signaling components, kinases and transcription factors (TFs). The importance of several key ABA and GA signaling intermediates will be illustrated. The knowledge gained from such studies will also help to establish a solid foundation to develop future crop improvement strategies.

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Key message</h3>Auxin can alter the fertility of bin2-1 plants and depends on the expression of SHY2.Brassinosteroids (BRs) play important roles in plant growth and developmental processes. By systematically evaluating the phenotypes of BR biosynthesis and BR signaling mutants, researchers have reported that BRs positively regulate floral development. In this study, we found that brassinosteroid-insensitive 2 (bin2-1) and short-hypocotyl 2 (shy2-2) mutants exhibited significantly reduced fertility. These mutants had short inflorescences, decreased floral organ length (short petals, stamens, carpels, and stigmas), and short siliques. Exogenous auxin applications could partially rescue the shortened length of the floral organs and siliques of the bin2-1 mutants. Additional experiments revealed that a lack of SHY2 activity increased the fertility of the bin2-1 mutants. A search for downstream affected genes revealed that auxin influences the expression of ARFs and PINs in the bin2-1 mutants, suggesting that auxin plays a major role in the regulation of bin2-1 plant fertility. Thus, BIN2 plays a role in fertility by affecting auxin levels, mainly by altering the expression of SHY2.

Abstract:Heterotrimeric G proteins are known to function as messengers in numerous signal transduction pathways. The null mutation of RGA (rice heterotrimeric G protein alpha subunit), which encodes the alpha subunit of heterotrimeric G protein in rice, causes severe dwarfism and reduced responsiveness to gibberellic acid in rice. However, less is known about heterotrimeric G protein in brassinosteroid (BR) signaling, one of the well-understood phytohormone pathways. In the present study, we used root elongation inhibition assay, lamina inclination assay and coleoptile elongation analysis to demonstrated reduced sensitivity of d1 mutant plants (caused by the null mutation of RGA) to 24-epibrassinolide (24-epiBL), which belongs to brassinosteroids and plays a wide variety of roles in plant growth and development. Moreover, RGA transcript level was decreased in 24-epiBL-treated seedlings in a dose-dependent manner. Our results show that RGA is involved in rice brassinosteroid response, which may be beneficial to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of G protein signaling and provide a novel perspective to understand BR signaling in higher plants.

Abstract:The tubular-shaped unicellular extensions of plant epidermal cells known as root hairs are important components of plant roots and play crucial roles in absorbing nutrients and water and in responding to stress. The growth and development of root hair include, mainly, fate determination of root hair cells, root hair initiation, and root hair elongation. Phytohormones play important regulatory roles as signal molecules in the growth and development of root hair. In this review, we describe the regulatory roles of auxin, ethylene (ETH), jasmonate (JA), abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellin (GA), strigolactone (SL), cytokinin (CK), and brassinosteroid (BR) in the growth and development of plant root hairs. Auxin, ETH, and CK play positive regulation while BR plays negative regulation in the fate determination of root hair cells; Auxin, ETH, JA, CK, and ABA play positive regulation while BR plays negative regulation in the root hair initiation; Auxin, ETH, CK, and JA play positive regulation while BR, GA, and ABA play negative regulation in the root hair elongation. Phytohormones regulate root hair growth and development mainly by regulating transcription of root hair associated genes, including WEREWOLF ( WER ), GLABRA2 ( GL2 ), CAPRICE ( CPC ), and HAIR DEFECTIVE 6 ( RHD6 ). Auxin and ETH play vital roles in this regulation, with JA, ABA, SL, and BR interacting with auxin and ETH to regulate further the growth and development of root hairs.
