Abstract:An efficient, practical and flexible multi-disciplinary design optimization (MDO) support is established. The turbomachinery blade is optimized to test the support through different simulator. The result shows that the performance of the blade is improved remarkably.

Abstract:An integrated,three-dimensional,multi-disciplinary optimization design system for turbine blades has been set up,which enables the design and analysis of certain blades optimized involving five disciplines.In this system,quintic polynomial is used for parameter modeling of three-dimensional turbine blades,and unit linear interpolation method used for transfer of interdisciplinary load information,while MIGA(Multi-island Genetic Algorithm) and SQP(Sequential Quadratic Programming) are used for overall optimization.The case study shows that, optimization efforts could improve greatly the performance of turbine blades,and the system exhibits higher stability,feasibility and efficiency for engineering applications.

Abstract:It presented a Kriging model-based multidisciplinary design optimization(MDO) framework for turbine blade.The approximation model,Kriging model,was reviewed and discussed systematically.Interdisciplinary coupling was considered by using loosely-coupled method.Based on multidisciplinary coupling analysis,the multidisciplinary feasible(MDF) method and Kriging model-based MDO method were founded respectively and compared subsequently.The results of optimizing a true blade show that the latter method can converge to the optimum fast and no precision lost obviously.And the overall blade performance improved remarkably demonstrates the efficiency and applicability of the proposed MDO framework.

Abstract:A multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) procedure for a vane with jet impinging cooling, film cooling of slots and holes, pin-fin array cooling was proposed in this paper. The structure of the vane and the prediction method of heat transfer were discussed and some of the formulas are presented. A mathematic model is established for multidisciplinary design optimization of a vane. A vane of a gas turbine is taken as an example to be optimized by using the procedure presented in this report. The obtained results show that the presented procedure is efficient.

Abstract:Quick multidisciplinary design optimization technique for complicated structures is studied,and the high computational costs and numerical noise issues are successfully resolved for cooling turbine blade design.Based on analytic and feature modeling methods,parametric geometric model is developed.The model can be rebuilt automatically according to the parameters changed,based on secondary development technology of CAD software.Coupled aerodynamic and heat transfer analysis is accomplished to get the result accurately.Pressure on the blade surface and temperature in the blade body obtained from former coupled analysis are specified as boundary conditions for structural analysis.As the grid for structural analysis keeps the same with the one for CFD analysis,these data are applied in one-to-one correspondence by the nodes.Creep life of blade is predicted by empirical formula according the strength result.18 parameters are taken as design variables at the blade tip and blade root sections.Optimal Latin hypercube sampling method is used to generate the experiment design points,and quick design optimization model is established by using Kriging functions.Thus,a cooling turbine blade multidisciplinary design optimization program,relating to aerodynamics,heat transfer,mechanics,vibration and fatigue life is established.The optimization objective is to minimize the blade temperature,total pressure loss and blade weight,with the constraints of resonance margin,stress,creep life and maximum deformation.Finally,the optimization is accomplished and blade comprehensive performance is improved,significantly.

Abstract:The study on MDO(multidisciplinary design optimization) technology is applied on compressor design and a multidisciplinary feasible system is set up to automatically optimize the design of centrifugal compressor. In this system, non-uniform rational B-spline is used to define radial blade profile and quintic polynomial with continuous three order derivatives is used to define diffuser blade profile. The transfer of load and deformation are finished by direct interpolation and the mesh regeneration methods. Based on parametric model design and coupling analysis methods, a centrifugal compressor is used to validate the feasibility of the optimization design system, the case study show that, optimization efforts could improve obviously the performance of centrifugal compressor. The calculation proves that the system is feasible, which can be applied on other multidisciplinary design system.

Abstract:The blade of axial turbocharger was parameterized into to a three dimensional model, and an optimization design platform was introduced for turbocharger turbine blade design. The platform was based on the iSIGHT software and implemented by NUME-CA, ANSYS and centrifugal stress code which is a fortran program coded by the authors. This platform can study aerodynamics, structure and vibration of the blade of turbocharger simultaneously. And an illustration had been studied. The result of optimization shows that the overall performance of the blade is improved remarkably. The method can be used to the blade design and to the whole turbocharger design.

Abstract:Multidisciplinary design optimization(MDO) considering aerodynamic,thermal and structural coupled system for turbine blade was performed by combining the Kriging approximate model and concurrent subspace optimization(CSSO) method.The case study shows that the optimal results are reasonable by CSSO based on Kriging approximation.Comparing to the commonly used single-level method,the CSSO method is more efficient,and can improve the design optimization result much better.It shows that the CSSO based on Kriging approximation method is well-suited for complex engineering.

Abstract:Multidisciplinary design optimization(MDO)methodology for turbine blades seeks to exploit the synergism of mutually interacting aerodynamics,heat transfer,structure and other disciplines to create improved designs,and deformation transfer among different models is an inevitable task encountered to dissolve the aero-structural coupling in the blade MDO process.In this paper the free-form deformation(FFD)was applied to transfer deformation of the MDO procedure for turbine blades.When transferring deformation from blade structural model to the aerodynamic model,FFD avoided regeneration of the aerodynamic model,and ensured the quality of the aerodynamic grids.Thus,this work can help to resolve the coupling among different disciplines in MDO of turbine blades and to complete the MDO procedure of a turbine blade exactly and directly.

Abstract:An automated multi-objective and multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) of a transonic turbine stage to maximize the isentropic efficiency and minimize the maximum stress of the rotor with constraints on mass flowrate and dynamic frequencies is presented in this article. The self-adaptive multi-objective differential evolution (SMODE) algorithm is studied and developed to seek Pareto solutions of the optimization, and a new constraint-handling method based on multi-objective optimization concept is applied for constraint handling. The optimization performance of the presented SMODE is demonstrated using the typical mathematical tests. By applying SMODE as an optimizer and integrating three-dimensional (3D) blade modelling method based on non-uniform B-spline, load-fitting transfer algorithm in parameter space, 3D Navier–Stokes solution technique, and finite element analysis method as well, seven Pareto solutions are obtained. Two Pareto solutions are analysed in detail. One is the highest isentropic efficiency individual, while the other is a compromise between efficiency and mechanical stress in the blade. The aerodynamic performance and strength characteristics of the optimized turbine stage are significantly improved. The analysis results indicate that the presented multi-objective and MDO method has a potential in the optimization of blade performance and can be applied as a promising method for the optimization design of axial turbomachinery blades

Abstract:This paper presents an automated optimization design methodology for turbomachinery blades using multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) and Navier-Stokes solver. The multi-branch Tournament selection and Pareto solution conception are used in the presented MOEAs. Elitist method and generation gap are adapted to ensure the optimization performance and decrease the computation expense. The Bezier-curves are utilized to parameterize the designed blade profile and corresponding control points are used as the designed variables. Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes solver is applied to evaluate the aerodynamic performance of the designed candidates. Two design cases of the 2D and 3D compressor blade are used to demonstrate the presented methodology performance. A 2D axial compressor blade is optimized for maximization of the static pressure rise and minimization of the total pressure loss at the fixed flow condition. The Pareto solutions are obtained using the presented optimization algorithm. The detailed analysis between the certain Pareto solutions with the higher static pressure rise and the lower total pressure loss and the initial design are illustrated. A 3D centrifugal compressor impeller blade is optimized as the second case. The maximization of the pressure rise and blade load and minimization of the rotational total pressure loss at the given flow conditions are worked as the design targets. The present method obtains many reasonable Pareto optimal designs that outperform the original centrifugal impeller at the designed condition.

Abstract:In a traditional multidisciplinary design optimization loop for complex-shaped structures, the regeneration of structure geometry and its associated analysis grids may be unsuccessful or of poor quality, which will reduce the result validity and efficiency of multidisciplinary design optimization. In this Paper, an improved multidisciplinary design optimization method based on parameterized free-form mesh deformation is proposed. Using this method, the analysis grid can be directly updated with high quality instead of regenerating the geometry model when design variables change during optimization. To achieve the mesh deformation of a blade in a single turbine stage, threedimensional control volume needs to be constructed using two-dimensional control planes at different blade heights, where the control points in the two-dimensional control plane are arranged and parameterized according to the definition of profile design variables. The grids for both computational fluid dynamics and structural analysis are controlled by the same control volume to ensure grid consistency on the fluid-structure interface. Results for an example single turbine stage show that the proposed method can guarantee good controllability and high grid quality when updating design variables in optimization loop. Multidisciplinary design optimization for the single turbine stage is performed, and the optimization results indicate a significant improvement of isentropic efficiency and turbine blade fatigue life. Therefore, the proposed multidisciplinary design optimization method based on parameterized mesh deformation provides an efficient tool for the design of complex and high-performance engineering structures.

Abstract:An efficient reliability-based multidisciplinary design optimization（RBMDO） framework for turbine blade was proposed by combining the single-loop-based reliability analysis（SLBRA） method with concurrent subspace optimization（CSSO） method.The Kriging approximation model was used and updated during the optimization process.The proposed method is efficient because it does not need iterative process during finding the most probable points of failure（MPP）.A turbine blade design optimization was employed to illustrate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed method,it shows that the optimal results satisfied the required reliability.From the comparison with the commonly used double-loop based RBMDO method it indicates that the proposed method is much more efficient and well-suited for complex engineering.

Abstract:In order to obtain better integrated performance of aero-engine during the conceptual design stage, multiple disciplines such as aerodynamics, structure, weight, and aircraft mission are required. Unfortunately, the couplings between these disciplines make it difficult to model or solve by conventional method. MDO (Multidisciplinary Design Optimization) methodology which can well deal with couplings of disciplines is considered to solve this coupled problem. Approximation method, optimization method, coordination method, and modeling method for MDO framework are deeply analyzed. For obtaining the more efficient MDO framework, an improved CSSO (Concurrent Subspace Optimization) strategy which is based on DOE (Design Of Experiment) and RSM (Response Surface Model) methods is proposed in this paper; and an improved DE (Differential Evolution) algorithm is recommended to solve the system-level and discipline-level optimization problems in MDO framework. The improved CSSO strategy and DE algorithm are evaluated by utilizing the numerical test problem. The result shows that the efficiency of improved methods proposed by this paper is significantly increased. The coupled problem of VCE (Variable Cycle Engine) conceptual design is solved by utilizing improved CSSO strategy, and the design parameter given by improved CSSO strategy is better than the original one. The integrated performance of VCE is significantly improved.

Abstract:The multidisciplinary design optimization(MDO) framework for aeroengine turbine based on life and reliability which covers the total process is developed. The framework consists of three parts: design module of parts, subsystem and system. The parametric model and optimization of turbine components such as rotor, stator, disk, casing and axle, can be created in parts design module. The interaction in subsystems, such as rotor-stator interaction, blade-casing gap and tenon-mortise contact problem can be solved in subsystem design module. The system design module can give out the global optimal solution of the whole turbine. The MDO for an aeroengine turbine using this framework has been taken, the results show that the framework is available.

Abstract:A multidisciplinary design optimization system for gas turbine blade,which involves structure,aerodynamic,heat transfer,vibration and service life,etc,has been developed,serving the purpose of multidisciplinary design optimization of single-hole thin wall cooling blade.A parametric modeling method was also proposed for single-hole thin wall cooling blade.The blade surface geometry is defined by five-order polynomials,while 3-D coupling analysis was made for aerodynamic and heat transfer.The average temperature and maximum temperature of blade volume were optimized,with aerodynamic,vibration and service life as the constraints.A combined algorithm of annealing simulation and SQP(Sequential Quadratic Programming) was used to optimize the blade parameters.While the flow rate of cooling air was kept unchanged,the cooling effect was improved and the performance requirement on the blade materials was reduced.

Abstract:With higher operation temperature required by the advanced aero-turbine, the conventional single web turbine disk (SWD) has reached its limits. At this circumstance, a twin-web disk (TWD) has been proposed as a breakthrough by J Eng Gas Turbines Power Trans ASME 124:298–302, (2002) for its improvements in heat transfer, structural strength and weight loss. However, this novel structure needs new cooling process which brings problems with pressure loss. Fins are designed in this paper in order to increase the outlet pressure and enhance the heat transfer, at the same time demonstrated by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. Then, the multidisciplinary design of optimization (MDO) has been performed to find a proper shape and layout of the fins with the minimum stress and maximum outlet pressure. A Kriging surrogate model is also used to accelerate the optimization pace. Because it is a typical multi-objective optimization problem (MOP), the Pareto Front set is obtained in this paper. The results show that the TWD with fins exhibits a better performance in heat transfer and outlet pressure than the one without fins. This structure would be a future trend in TWD design.

Abstract:A new improved multidiscipline feasible (MDF) strategy based on the updating approximate function constructed by Response Surface Method (RSM) is firstly pointed out and denoted as MDF-update-RSM which involves double cycles. Before the start of inner loop on MDF-update-RSM strategy, the approximate function is initialized by RSM on a set of sampling points which are generated from the Design of Experiment (DOE). With the process of outer loop, the coefficients and one high-order term of polynomial are updated and upgrade by the Least Square Regression. The ability of this new strategy promotes the efficiency and saves huge calculational cost incurred by the MDF strategy which always runs on the multidisciplinary analysis (MDA). The MDF-update-RSM is good procedure to ameliorate the accuracy that has been tested by the Rosenbrock function in this paper. Finally, the optimization strategy is employed on executing the low pressure turbine shrouded blade design and provides a true optimal result compared to the classical MDF strategy.

Abstract:The newly designed structures are employed to improve the high pressure turbine (HPT) disk to the expected performance. The twin-web disk (TWD) has been proven to be the future trend of the HPT disk due to its breakthrough in weight loss, strength and heat transfer efficiency compared to the conventional single web disk (SWD). Because of the multi-physics working conditions and intense coupling of multiple disciplines, the conventional design of the HPT disk is a labor intensive work. A series of design procedures, including asymmetrical computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation method, multidisciplinary feasible method (MDF), and design of experiments (DOE), are proposed to obtain the proper design for both TWD and SWD in an efficient way. In the present work, the multidisciplinary design of optimization (MDO) has been performed to find the proper shape of the TWD disk with the minimum mass. The results showed that the TWD exhibits a better performance in heat transfer and weight loss than SWD. The modeling and optimization procedure of this work can be referred for engineering design.

Abstract:An automatic multiobjective optimization approach to multidisciplinary design of turbomachinery blades is proposed in this paper. Based on this approach, an algorithm named Multiobjective Differential Evolution (MDE) is introduced as an optimizer to find the Pareto solution sets of the multidisciplinary design problem. A typical multiobjective function has been applied to demonstrate the performance of the presented multiobjective optimization algorithm The Non-uniform B-Spline method is adopted to parameterize the turbomachinery blade profiles. The aerodynamic performance of design blade candidates is predicted by using a three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solution. The blade stresses and vibration frequencies are evaluated by means of a finite element analysis coupled with the surface pressure of blades obtained from CFD calculation.To validate the optimization capability of the multiobjective optimization algorithm, the multidisciplinary design of a typical transonic compressor blade, NASA Rotor 37, is conducted. The blade is optimized for the maximization of the isentropic efficiency and the minimization of the maximum stresses with constraints on mass flow rate, total pressure ratio, and dynamic frequencies. The Pareto solutions are obtained from the multiobjective optimization. Based on the analysis of the design objectives between the Pareto designs and reference design, it is indicated that the overall performance of the optimized designs is improved. The results demonstrate that the presented multiobjective optimization algorithm has a potential in blade performance optimization and it is a promising method for the multidisciplinary design of turbomachinery blades.
