Abstract:As a non-invasive geophysical tool for delineating buried features in shallow subsurface,ground-penetrating radar (GPR)has been applied to study coarse roots since 1999.So far,the feasibility of applying GPR to detect and quantify coarse roots has been validated in different soils. This paper reviews the recent important improvements in GPR-based coarse roots in-vestigation,including the establishment of a theoretical forward simulation protocol of root GPR radar signal, the assessment of the impacts of limiting factors on the accuracy of GPR-based coarse roots detection and quantification, the improvement of using GPR to estimate coarse root biomass, and the development of GPR-based 3D root system architectural reconstruction.Such ad-vances extend the application of GPR in coarse roots detection and quantification, which improves the non-invasive roots study in the field. As GPR system design,GPR data processing software, and GPR data collection settings are continuously improved, this noninvasive technique could offer greater potential to study coarse roots.
