Abstract:In order to monitor the health conditions of veteran trees and provide guidance for reinvigorating measures,a ground-penetrating radar(GPR) was used to detect the horizontal and vertical distributions of roots of a veteran oriental arborvitae(Platycladus orientalis Franco.).Result showed that GPR could detect the distribution of roots in the surface soil at 0-60cm depth. It could also detect large-size roots in deeper soil layers. The detected horizontal distribution of roots was largely in agreement with the observed result. However,GPR could not detect overlapped and crossed roots. In general, the performance of GPR got better when the diameters of roots were larger. With improvements in the sensitivity of antennas and post-processing software of data,GPR can be used to study the root distribution of veteran trees and provide necessary information on the restoration of the vigor of veteran trees.
