Abstract:Objective To explore the relationship between illness uncertainty and anxiety as well as depression in cervical cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy .Methods Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale ( HADS) and Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale ( MUIS) were used to investigate 68 cervical cancer patients .Results The total score of MUIS was 93.06 ±7.91.The average score of HADS-A was 6.90 ±3.50 and HADS-D was 6.26 ±4.06.The prevalence of depressive disorders , anxiety disorders, and comorbidity of both disorders was 39.7% (27), 35.3% (24) and 26.47% (18), respectively.HADS-A was positively correlated with total score of illness uncertainty and ambiguity (r=0.374,P=0.002;r=0.526,P=0.000).HADS-D was positively correlated with total score of illness uncertainty, ambiguity and inconsistency (r=0.381,P=0.001;r=0.397,P=0.001;r =0.318,P=0.009).Unpredictability was negatively correlated with HADS-A and HADS-D (r=-0.355,P=0.003;r=-0.272,P=0.026).Conclusion Illness uncertainty is closely related with the feeling of anxiety and depression in cervical cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy .Doctors and nurses should attach concerns to the uncertainty of the patients , and reduce illness uncertainty , anxiety and depression by providing more relevant information .
