Illness uncertainty and coping styles in cervical cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy

Abstract:Objective:To explore the relationship between illness uncertainty and coping styles in cervical cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. Methods:All 68 cervical cancer patients were assessed by convenient sampling and investigated with Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale(MUIS)and Jalowiec coping scale(JCS-60). Results:The total score of MUIS was(93. 06 ± 7. 91). Optimistic coping scored was highest with score of(2. 11 ± 0. 45),which was the style most often applied by cervical cancer patients . Emotive coping scored was lowest with score of(0. 97 ± 0. 62). Among 60 coping items,〞Hoped that things would get better〞 was the most often used coping strategy,〞Took a drink to make yourself feel better〞 was the least used coping strategy. MUIS was positively correlated with evasive coping,fatalistic coping and emotive coping(r=0. 285,P=0. 02;r=0. 369,P=0. 002;r=0. 248,P=0. 045). Self-reliant coping was negatively related to unpredictability(r= -0. 265,P=0. 031). Conclusion:Illness uncertainty and the coping styles in cervical cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy are closely related. Health care workers should provide the patients more relevant information to reduce illness uncertainty and establish effective coping styles.
