An epidemiological investigation of diabetes among elderly residents in Xingtai city

Abstract:Objective To explore the current epidemic situation of diabetes among elderly residents in Xingtai city of Shandong Province .Methods A total of 1 202 residents over 40 years of age in 7 communities in Xingtai city were chosen with random cluster sampling method and surveyed with diabetes questionnaire .Physical examina-tion and blood biochemical detection were conducted .Prevalence and influencing factors of diabetes were analyzed with SPSS statistical software .Results The prevalence rate of diabetes was 20 .7% ,the awareness rate was 10% , cure rate was 9 .2% ,control rate was 4 .1% ,and the rate of impaired glucose regulation was 17 .1% .The preva-lence of diabetes significantly increased with age ,occupation ,educational level ,body mass index ,diet ,and exercise habits .Lower educational level ,greater BMI ,more sweet intake and lower labor intensity were closely correlated with higher prevalence .Conclusions There is high prevalence of diabetes ,low awareness rate ,treatment rate and control rate among elderly residents in Xingtai city .It is essential to promote health education on diabetes ,lifestyle and medical intervention ,in order to reduce the incidence and improve the treatment of diabetes .
