Characteristics of clinical research stages in articles of high impact factor journals

Abstract:Objective To explore and understand the stages of clinical research,and to summarize the characteristics of these stages.Methods A questionnaire was designed to collect relevant information on the characteristics of medical research articles after group discussion.A total of 286 articles were obtained by searching for 4 comprehensive and 4 specialist medical periodicals.276 articles were selected to analyze the characteristics of research stages after further screening.Four professional medical journal editors read these articles independently,extracted relevant information,and completed the questionnaire.The database was established by using Access.Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS18.0.Results In the 276 articles,there were 106 exploratory studies,71 nurturing studies and 99 confirmatory studies.The medians of sample size of exploratory studies,nurturing studies and confirmatory studies were 30,337 and 2816,respectively.The difference between these three groups was statistically significant.The proportion of crosssectional study (42.5 ％),was the highest in exploratory studies.However half of the nurturing studies and confirmatory studies were prospective studies.The proportions were 59.2 ％ and 57.6 ％ respectively.About 80％ of the nurturing studies and confirmatory studies had parallel control.But only 42.5％ exploratory study were parallel control designed.The proportions of exploratory studies,nurturing studies and confirmatory studies in the specialist medical periodicals were 49.5 ％,34.7 ％ and 15.8 ％ respectively.And the proportions in the comprehensive medical periodicals were 32.6％,21.0％ and 46.4％ respectively.The proportions of these characters were statistically significant in the three clinical research stages (p＜0.05).Conclusions after analyzed these articles in journals with high impact factors,we realized that clinical studies were divided into three stages.Each stage had its own characters and research goal.
