Clinical therapeutic effects on ulcerative colitis treated with the modified baitouweng decoction and the retention enema

Abstract:Objective To observe the therapeutic effects on ulcerative colitis treated with the modi-fied baitouweng decoction and the retention enema.Methods Observing the cases of the mild and moderate ulcerative colitis of the left half colon,40 patients were differentiated as the internal retention of damp heat in TCM and were randomized into a Chinese herb medicine group and a western medicine group.In the Chinese herbal medicine group,the combined treatment was applied with the oral administration of the modified bai-touweng decoction and the retention enema of Chinese herbal medicine.In the western medicine group,the mesalazine enter-coated tablets were prescribed.The duration of treatment was 8 weeks.The symptom scores and the mucosal score of colonoscopy were compared between the Chinese herbal medicine group and the western medicine group before and after treatment.Results After treatment,the scores of diarrhea,abdomi-nal pain and mucopurulent stool as well as intestinal tract mucus score were different significantly as com-pared with those before treatment in the two groups.After treatment,the differences were significant in the scores of diarrhea and pucopurulent stool between the two groups(P<0.05).The differences were not signif-icant in the scores of abdominal pain and intestinal tract mucus(P >0.05).Conclusion The combined treatment with the oral administration of the modified baitouweng decoction and the retention enema of Chi-nese herbal medicine achieves the better effects on mild and moderate ulcerative colitis of the left half colon as compared with mesalazine enter-coated tablets.But,this research results do not prove that the Chinese herbal medicine can promote intestinal mucosa healing successfully.
