A Controlled Study on Clinical Efficacy of Chinese Herbal Compounds, Anjunning and Kanfuxin on Alleviating Opioid Protracted Abstinent Symptoms

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate and compare the efficacy of two Chinese herbal compounds: Anjunning and Kangfuxin on alleviating opioid protracted abstinence symptoms. Methods: 180 heroin addicts from compulsive detoxification institute who met the criteria of dependence in DSM-IV were randomly assigned to three treatment groups. Subjects of each group were treated for one month with Anjunning, Kanfuxin and placebo according to the principle of parallel-control and double blindness, and were assessed with self-rating scale of protracted abstinence symptoms on the days of 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 56, and 70 after admission. Results:①The total scores of the scale of the Anjunning group on the days of 21, 28 after administration were significantly lower than those of the placebo group, but there were no significant differences between the Kanfuxin and placebo group.②For the emotional symptoms factor, there were no significant differences among the three groups at all assessment points.③For the sleeping factor,there was statistically significant difference between the groups of Kanfuxin and placebo on day 7 after treatment, but no such difference found among the other groups. ④For the physical symptoms factor, there were no significant differences between the two experimental groups and the placebo group on the 7th day after the treatment, but the difference became significant between the groups of Kangfuxin and Anjunning on day 28 after the discontinuation of treatment. ⑤For the craving factor, the scores in the groups of Anjunning and Kangfuxin were significantly lower than those of the control group. Conclusion:①Generally, Anjunning and Kanfuxin can effectively alleviate the heroin protracted abstinence symptoms, it seems that Anjunning was better than Kangfuxin in terms of earlier efficacy. ②Anjunning, Kangfuxin had no obvious effects on alleviating emotional symptoms. ③Kangfuxin was effective on sleeping problems, but only on the 7th day after treatment. ④Physical symptoms were well alleviated in Kangfuxin, Anjunning groups but rebounded in Anjunning group after terminating the treatment.⑤Anjunning and Kangfuxing may significantly alleviate craving.
