Investigation on the Stress and Coping Style of the Liver Cancer Patients Receiving Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization

Abstract:Objective To investigate the stress and coping style among the liver cancer patients receiving transcathe-ter arterial chemoembolization (TACE), help them to cope effectively, improve their quality of life. Methods A self-designed stress scale and Jalowiec coping style scale for the liver cancer patients receiving TACE were used to study the stress and coping style of 83 liver cancer patients. Results The stress was generated from illness-related, environment-related and social stressors. The stress level of 25 stressors was at moderate or over. The petients cammonly used various coping styles. Each of the 60 coping strategies had been used by 20 (24. 1%) to 81 (97. 6%) of the patients. Most of the coping styles were positively related with patient's stress level (P0. 05). Conclusion Patients coped with stress using various types of coping strategies. Nurses can use Lazarus and Folk-man's stress, appraisal and coping model as a framework to assess and intervene liver cancer patients, help them release their stress, improve their quality of life.
