Abstract:Objective To explore the value of ultrasound in the diagnosis of subacute thyroiditis (SAT). Methods Ultrasonic characteristics of the thyroid in 65 patients with SAT and 70 normal subjects (normal group) were analyzed retrospectively. Results In the 65 patients, bilateral lesions were detected in 19 patients, unilateral lesion was found in 41 patients and isthmus of thyroid single lesions was in 5 patients. Multiple lesions were noticed in 35 patients, while single lesion was found in 30 patients. All lesions showed low echo. Abundant signals of blood flow in lesions or the peripheral area were detected in 59 patients. Abnormal neck lymph nodes were noticed in 12 patients, with signals of blood flow in 5 patients. Compared with normal group, the anterior-posterior diameter, left-right diameter and thyroid isthmus in the group with SAT lesions enlarged (all P0.05), and the superior artery peak systolic velocity in the side of thyroid with SAT lesions increased (P0.05). Thirty-six patients after treatment were followed-up with dynamic ultrasoud, the size of all lesions reduced gradually, and the lesions disappeared completely in 5 patients. Conclusion Ultrasound plays an important role in diagnosis of SAT.
