Implementation and Evaluation of PACS Workflow Monitoring Programme

Abstract:Objective This article, by implementation and evaluation of a monitoring programme in PACS system, brings forward and discusses the issues of database security, which have to pay much attention to when integrating a PACS. Methods Our PACS system has been mostly integrated by a controller server (Fire V480, SUN Corp.) and a SCSI RAID (redundant array of inexpensi\e disks. RAID) of 800GB. The different imaging modalities have been connected to the PACS server by using a star topology. Image display workstations have been connected to the PACS server by a bus topology through switch equipments. A special web server has been linked to display workstations (personal computers) as our RIS system, whose database is directly controlled by the PACS server. Security monitoring for database utilizes images workflow and runs monitoring programme-'PACSMON', which can monitor the workflow and the use of images. Security monitoring for text files (diagnostic reports) has been performanced by monitoring the database flow of RIS system. Results After 10 months running of our PACS system, the PACSMON has perfectly showed acts of querying and retrieving of images on the whole. and monitored working status of any display workstations on real time. Especially for the acts of querying and retrieving, the PACSMON can accurately show the location of display workstations and the quantity. frequency of querying and retrieving, and has effectively controlled the system to be attacked and the images to be stolen. Conclusions The operating management of PACS must resolve some following problems:1.the security of system running; 2. the security of system database; 3.the security of images and files content; 4.the lose of database transmitted.
