Expression of stanniocalcin 2 protein in colorectal cancer tissue and its clinical significance

Abstract:Objective To investigate the expression of starmiocalcin 2 (STC2) protein in colorectal cancer tissue and its clinical significance.Methods Immunohistochemistry (SP) was conducted to detect STC2 expression in paraffin-embedded colorectal cancer tissues of 105 cases and normal tissues of 50 cases.The clinicopathologic parameters for this study included sex,age,maximum tumor size,tumor stage,lymphatic metastasis,histologic grade,depth of invasion and distant metastasis.Results The positive expression rate of STC2 protein in colorectal cancer tissues was significantly higher than in normal tissues (85.71％ vs.18.00％,P ＜ 0.01).Sex ratio,age,tumor size,histologic grade,tumor stage and lymphatic metastasis in different groups did not show significant differences in STC2 expression (P ＞ 0.05).However,STC2 protein expression was significantly higher in cases with metastasis (100.00％) than in those without metastasis (81.93％,P ＜0.05),and the serosa-invasion group had a higher rate of STC2 protein expression than that without serosa-invasion (90.80％ vs.61.11％,P ＜ 0.01).The expression intensity of STC2 protein was correlated with metastasis (P ＜ 0.01).Conclusion The abnormal expression of STC2 protein in colorectal cancer is closely correlated to the tumor invasion and metastasis,and could play a role in the process of tumor metastasis.
