Research progress in podocyte regeneration

Abstract:Podocyte is an important part of glomerular filtration barrier.A variety of stress and/or injury factors may lead to reduction in the number of podocytes, which is the leading cause of glomerulosclerosis initiation and progression.Recent studies have found that kidney stem cells may be regenerated by renal intrinsic cells or precursor stem cells to compensate for the lost podocytes.There are three possible precursor stem cells in humans and rodents that are involved in podocytes regeneration:bone marrow-derived stem cells,glomerular parietal epithelial cells,and juxtaglomerular apparatus renin-secreting cells.Although some progress has been made in research on podocytes regeneration,there are still many issues to be further explored.
