The effect of the bowel preparation on the postoperative recovery of gastric cancer patients

Abstract:Objective To study the effect of bowel preparation on postoperative recovery and investigate its necessity for gastric carcinoma patients. Method 66 patients with gastric cancer were randomized as mechanical bowel prepara-tion (MBP) group (n=35) and non-MBP group (n=31). The preoperative serum albumin level, score of daily living activi-ties, surgery measures and adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Result There were no statistical difference in preoperative serum albumin level, preoperative daily living activities, incision length, operative time, intra-operative blood loss, intraoperative washings volume, and time to first defecation after surgery between the two groups (P>0.05);The time to first flatus after surgery, and time of indwelling catheter were significantly shorter in MBP group compared with non-MBP group (P<0.01), and the hospitalization expenses were less in MBP group (P<0.01);The posi-tive rate of bacterial culture of abdominal drainage fluid, the incidence of anastomotic leakage and incision infection were similar between the two groups (P>0.05); The incidence of fever (>38.5 ℃), reuse of antibiotics, abdominal distention with obstructive causes, abdominal pain and the need for aided defecation were lower in MBP group compared with non-MBP group (P<0.01). Conclusion Proper bowel preparation before surgery can promote the quick postoperative recov-ery, which is beneficial for both doctors and patients.
