Expression and Biologic Significance of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) in Human Meningiomas

Abstract:Purpose]To explore the expression and biologic significance of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in human meningioma.[Methods]VEGF and microvascular density(MVD) were detected in 51 cases with meningiomas(benign(grade Ⅰ),38;atypical(grade Ⅱ),11 and malignant(grade Ⅲ),2)by immunohistochemical method.[Results]Expression level of VEGF protein was not significantly different between grade Ⅰ group and grade Ⅱ,Ⅲ group. The MVD of grade Ⅰ, grade Ⅱ and Ⅲ meningioma was 131.08±115.93 and 145.12±99.21(P0.05) respectively. The expression level of VEGF was positively correlated to MVD. However, the expression level of VEGF was not correlated to tumor invasion and brain invasion. [Conclusion] VEGF may play an important role in angiogenesis and participate the development of human meningiomas. VEGF was not correlateted to the progression of meningiomas from benign status to atypical ones, tumor invasion and brain invasion.
