Abstract:Objective To analyze hepatitis C virus (HCV) prevalence and associated risk factors among drug users in Dehong prefecture,Yunnan province and provide evidence for the development of prevention and control measures against HCV infection. Methods A repeated cross-sectional survey was conducted among drug users in Dehong prefecture from 2010 to 2016.Epidemiological data were collected through face-to-face interviews by using a structured questionnaire and blood samples were taken for serum antibody testing. The Chi squared test and multiple logistic regression were used to examine associated risk factors of HCV infection. Results From 2010 to 2016,the average prevalence of HCV infection was 22.7% among drug users in Dehong, with 18.6% of HIV negative individuals,64.3% of HIV positive individuals, and 74.7% of injection drug users (IDUs),respectively.Multiple logistic regression analyses showed that age, unmarried and divorced or widowed status, traditional drug use and mixed drug, and commercial sex behaviors in the last year were positively associated with HCV infection among HIV negative individuals.Year, male and Burmese nationality were positively associated with HCV infection among HIV positive individuals;and injection drug use was positively associated with HCV infection in both HIV negative individuals (OR=15.51,95% CI=13.17-18.27) and HIV positive individuals (OR=4.03,95% CI=2.88-5.62).Conclusion HCV infec tion prevalence is higher among IDUs in Dehong and increasing rapidly with years among HIV positive individuals.Injection drug use and sex behavior are, especially among HIV negative individuals, the main risk factors for HCV infection.Health education and behavior intervention are needed to carry out according to the characteristics of drug users.
