Preliminary study of the psychological condition of halitosis patients

Abstract:Objective To assess the differences of psychological condition between patients with and without halitosis,and to explore the psychological problems of halitosis patients.Methods Patients who were complained of bad breath and were diagnosed as halitosis in the Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital were included into case group,while patients who were diagnosed without halitosis were included into control group.Questionnaires and measurement of the halitosis were used to collect the data.In questionnaires,information on participants' general status,Self-reporting Inventory(SCL-90) were collected.To measure the oral malodor,Oral Chroma and organoleptic test were used.SPSS19.0 was used for data analysis.Results The halitosis group had significantly higher SCL-90 scores than the control group (0.63 vs.0.48,P=0.002).The scores of the factors of interpersonal sensitivity,anxiety,depression,paranoid ideation were found significantly different between two groups.Conclusions Psychological condition in patients with halitosis is significantly worse than patients without halitosis.Four aspects are mainly manifested in the interpersonal sensitivity,anxiety,depression and paranoid ideation.It is suggested that to improve patients' quality of life,we should pay attention to the mental health of patients in the clinical treatment of halitosis patients,strengthen the education and guidance.
