Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) preconditioning on post operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) and expression levels of miR-146a and miR-572 in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Methods Sixty-two patients who underwent elective CABG in the hospital from May 2017 to October 2018 were enrolled for study, and were randomly divided into the control group and the HBO group, each consisting of 31 patients. The patients in the control group received routine treatment during perioperative period, while the patients in the HBO group were treated with HBO before surgery. After surgery, cognitive function, life quality, levels of serum miR-146a and miR-572 and rate of POCD were compared between the 2 groups. Results After CABG, the scores in the 5 dimensions of Newman scale intelligence test, sequential digital retelling, reversal digital retelling, story recollection and connection time in the control group all significantly decreased as compared with those before surgery (P<0.05). The physiological function, mental status and social function of the life quality scale were significantly lower than those of the HBO group (P<0.05). The serum miR-146a level in the control group was significantly higher than that in the HBO group, and the serum miR-572 level was considerably lower than that in the HBO group (P<0.05) The rate of POCD in the control group was 38.7%, which was significantly higher than 9.7% of the HBO group, with statistical significance (P<0.05). Conclusion HBO pretreatment could effectively maintain blood oxygen concentration in the patients after CABG, reduce serum miR-146a level, increase miR-572 level, reduce the rate of POCD, and ultimately improve patient life quality after surgery. Key words: Hyperbaric oxygen; Coronary artery bypass grafting; Post operative cognitive dysfunction; miR-146a; miR-572
