Abstract:Objective: To explore the characteristics of sleep apnea during the period of withdrawal in the patients with alcohol dependence. Methods: Thirty-eight male inpatients met the criteria of ICD-10 on alcohol dependence were enrolled and the clinical data and polysomnography (PSG) parameters were collected. According to the scores of apnea hypopnea index (AHI), they were divided into two groups, one was alcohol dependent accompanying sleep apnea group (study group, ADSA, 18 cases) with AHI≥5 per hour, and another was alcohol dependent non sleep apnea group (control group 1, ADNSA, 20 cases) with AHI less than 5. In the same period, thirty-six outpatients with non-alcohol dependence being AHI≥5 per hour were enrolled as control group 2 (non-alcohol dependent sleep apnea group, NADSA). Then the proportion of sleep apnea in alcohol dependence patients and the differences of sleep parameters between study group and control groups were analyzed. Results: The proportion of sleep apnea in alcohol - dependent group was 47.37%. Compared with ADNSA group, the age of sleep apnea group was older(P=0. 019), the course of disease was longer (P=0. 018). Compared with the NADSA group, the sleep latency of ADSA group was prolonged (P=0. 008), but other parameters such as sleep efficiency, total sleep time, AHI, OAI (obstructive sleep apnea index), CAI (central apnea index), MAI (mixed apnea index), hypopnea index, oxygen saturation, arousal index were not statistically different(all P>0.05). As for different alcohol withdrawal duration (1 -14 days and 15 -28 days), there were no significant differences among sleep parameters (P>0.05). Conclusion: The proportion of sleep apnea in alcohol abstinence patients is higher. The parameters of sleep apnea in AD patients are the same with SA patients, and they are relatively stable within 1 month after withdrawal. Therefore, the sleep apnea during withdrawal period in AD patients should be paid more attention due to its effect on the health.
