The Features of Patients of General Practice Outpatient Clinic in Urban and Rural Areas

Abstract:Objective To compare the basic features and diseases of patients between the general practice clinic ( urban clinic) and the Liangzhu clinic ( rural clinic) of the First Affiliated Hospital of College of Medicine of Zhejiang University and investigate the medical care conduct and demands of patients, in order to provide scientific references for better carrying out general practice services in the future. Methods From January 1 to June 1 in 2013, we enrolled patients who established electronic medical records in the rural clinic and the urban clinic as subjects, and the patients without complete data were excluded. A retrospective analysis was conducted to compare the basic information and diseases. Results There were totally 681 patients in the urban clinic and 7 922 patients in the rural clinic, and the comparison among the two clinics in patients′gender, age and region distribution showed significant differences (P<0. 05) . The first five diseases with the highest numbers of patients in the urban clinic were abdominal pain (99, 14. 54%), gastritis (99, 14. 54%), hypertension (64, 9. 40%), lack of strength (64, 9. 40%) and diabetes mellitus (48, 7. 05%); the first five diseases with the highest numbers of patients in the rural clinic were upper respiratory tract infection (1 732, 21. 86%), hypertension (1 061, 13. 39%), external injuries (incised wound, joint sprain, hand injury and ocular injury; 420, 5. 30%), pharyngitis (235, 2. 97%) and diabetes mellitus (234, 2. 95%) . For the five diseases with the highest numbers of patients in the urban clinic, singificant differences existed in gender distribution of patients among abdomal pain, hypertension and diabetes mellitus ( P <0. 05 ); for the five diseases with the highest numbers of patients in the rural clinic, singificant differences existed in gender distribution of patients among upper respiratory tract infection and external injuries (P<0. 05) . Singificant differences existed in age and onset season of patients among the five diseases with the highest numbers of patients in the urban clinic ( P<0. 01 ); singificant differences existed in age and onset season of patients among the five diseases with the highest numbers of patients in the rural clinic ( P<0. 01) . Conclusion Differences exist in the features and diseases of patients between the rural clinic and urban clinic of the First Affiliated Hospital of the College of Medicine of Zhejiang University. Therefore, different demands of urban and rural areas should be taken into consideration, in order to provide covenient and high-quality medical services.
