Abstract:Effect of depth of grain bed, velocity of airflow, and cycle of airflow reversals on the moisture uniformity, drying rate and heat consumption of the paddy drying technology were studied. The results show that the moisture uniformity is mainly affected by airflow rate. An increase in airflow rate enhances moisture uniformity throughout the grain bed. The optimum drying parameters of the technology were obtained.

Abstract:The process of drying thin-layer radish strips under two drying conditions was analyzed and a predictive model was set up according to the mass and heat balance principles in drying.The corresponding experiment showed that the measured values were very close to the predicted values.The predictive result indicates that the drying speed of material first increases,then decreases and lastly the moisture content of material tends to equilibrium in drying,which accords with the law of drying.So it is feasible to forecast the process of drying thin-layer radish strips by the predictive model.

Abstract:The effects of heat on moisture diffusion, inner evaporation and internal-heat generation were considered by numerically simultaneous models of heat and mass transfer for microwave drying on apple, assuming that the heat-transfer and mass-transfer coefficients are variable. Abstract:This study investigated the effects of drying temperature, slice thickness and slice angle on cassava slice drying and determined suitable thin-layer model with an online weighing fixed bed (Macro-TGA). The experimental results showed that drying temperature and slice thickness were critical factors for cassava slice drying. Based on the experimental data, the activation energy for diffusion was calculated to be 39.37 kJ mol−1, characterizing the drying difficulty of the cassava slice drying. Ten thin-layer drying models, which were semi-theoretical models or empirical, were fitted to the drying data, and the correlation coefficient (R2), Chi-square (χ2), root mean square error and applicability were compared. It was concluded that two-term exponential model described the drying most satisfactorily, with good statistical analysis coefficients and simple functions of model parameters. The model parameters were determined as functions of temperature and slice thickness. Predictions of one case with two-term exponential model were compared with experimental data and the correlation coefficient was 0.99852, indicating good prediction.

Abstract:The effects of different hot air speeds and temperatures on the drying characteristics of half-ripe rice paper were investigated by hot air convection drying experiments. The thin-layer drying experiments were carried out at three different combinations of air speeds of 1.97 m/s, 3.00 m/s, and 3.90 m/s and temperatures of 85 °C, 100 °C and 115 °C. The results show that among the 10 drying kinetic models selected, the Modified Page model is the most suitable model to describe the drying characteristics of the thin layer of half-ripe rice paper; the whole drying process exists obvious ascending, constant and descending processes; the effective moisture diffusion coefficient of half-ripe rice paper is in the range of 1.52656 × 10 −9 m 2 /s–3.15816 × 10 −9 m 2 /s, whose size increases with the increase of the hot wind speed and temperature. Its magnitude increases with the increase of wind speed and temperature; the drying activation energy of half-ripe rice paper is 6.55 kJ/mol calculated by Arrhenius equation.

Abstract:In this paper,the characteristics of microwave drying sweet potato were studied.The single-factor experiments were designed to study the effects of different loading quantity,power and thickness of the slice on water content rate,dehydration rate in drying sweet potato.The laws of dehydrating and power consumption were obtained.The mathematical model of microwave drying sweet potato slice was obtained.The experimental results were analyzed by the DPS software,showing the fitting equation with good statistical test results.
Mathematical modeling of thin layer drying of carrot slices by forced convection

Abstract:The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of drying air temperature, velocity and slice thickness on thin layer drying model of carrot slices. A laboratory dryer was used for thin layer carrot drying process and moisture ratio values (MR) for any drying time were compared using 14 different models, i.e., Newton, Page, Modified Page I and II, Henderson and Pabis, Logarithmic, Two term, Two term exponential, Wang and Singh, Thompson, Diffision approximation, Verma et al., Modified Henderson and Pabis and Midilli et al. models. Root mean square error (RMSE), reduced Chi square (χ2) and modeling efficiency (EF) were used as statistical parameters to determine the most suitable model among them. The effects of drying parameters on the best suited drying model coefficients were than determined with linear, logarithmic, power exponential and Arhenius type equations. According to the results, moisture ratio values could be predicted by the Midilli et al. model with high accuracy. It is also possible to predict the moisture content of the product with a generalized model showing the effect of the drying air temperature, velocity and slice thickness with the range of 55–75 °C, 2.0–3.0 m s−1 and 3–9 mm, respectively.

Abstract:A forecast was made with thin layer radish strip on two drying condition using the principle of the balance on material and heat. A forecast math model was established, and validated by experiment. The result indicated that the forecast approaches the experiment very well. The forecast also indicated that the material drying speed changed rapid gradually at first, then lessened, and approached equilibrium moisture content finally. The forecast mathematical model was feasible on thin layer drying of radish strip.

Abstract:It is important to understand the characteristics of hot-air drying of cotton fabrics for the structure design and process optimization of the drying equipment. A transient heat and moisture transfer model of the thin porous cotton fabric is established, in which the uneven heating on the textile surface caused by the hot air jet was considered. The effects of environmental air temperature and relative humidity, initial moisture content, hot air temperature, and velocity at the nozzle outlet on the drying characters were studied via this model. Results show that the temperature of the constant rate drying period at various points on the fabric is different due to the uneven heat input, which is higher at the center part of the fabric and lower away from the center of the fabric. The drying time is very non-uniform on the fabric surface especially when the hot air for drying and the environmental air have a large temperature difference. The environmental air humidity also has great influence on the drying time. The drying time of fabric increases by more than two times as the environmental air humidity rises from 5% to 30%. During the drying process, increasing hot air temperature is more conducive to improve the drying efficiency than increasing hot air velocity. The drying time decreases 19% only when the hot air velocity doubled, meaning that increasing hot air velocity cannot improve drying rate effectively. Moreover, experiments were conducted and results show that the experimental results coincided with the simulated ones well.

Abstract:This study investigates the effectiveness of microwave-assisted hot air drying (MAHD) on corn drying process, water migration, dielectric properties, microstructure, and quality attributes. The research compares MAHD with conventional hot air drying (HAD), employing various microwave powers (1.2-3.6 kW) and hot air temperatures (35-55 °C). The results demonstrate that MAHD significantly reduces the drying time (by 30.95-64.29%) compared to HAD. Two-term model accurately describes the drying kinetics of corn. Microwave facilitated the transformation and more uniform distribution of water within the corn, observed through LF-NMR/MRI. Additionally, MAHD was effective in preserving the color and carotenoids, while reducing fat acidity, indicating better quality retention. Microstructure analysis revealed that MAHD increases microporosity and cracks in corn, which correlates with the observed enhancement in drying efficiency. These findings underscore the potential of MAHD as a superior method for drying corn, offering benefits in terms of reduced drying time and improved quality preservation.

Abstract:In this study, a low-air temperature sludge drying system was constructed and the effects of temperature and relative humidity on the characteristics of the system were investigated. The results showed that the drying rate of sludge increased with an increase in air temperature and a decrease in the air’s relative humidity. The influence of temperature on the average drying rate exhibited an approximate quadratic distribution, while the influence of relative humidity on the average drying rate exhibited an almost linear distribution. The relationship equations of the average drying rate, temperature, and humidity were summarized and compared with the experimental results, and the maximum relative error was 7.6375%. By comparing the experimental results with the commonly used thin-layer drying models, it was found that the sludge drying characteristics were more consistent with the Midilli model. Based on the relevant parameters of the Midilli model, the relationship between the segmented drying moisture content and the average drying rate was proposed, and the empirical formula of the drying rate and MR under different conditions was fitted.

Mathematical modeling of thin-layer drying kinetics and moisture diffusivity study of apple slices using infrared conveyor-belt dryer

Abstract:The drying features of apples at different infrared drying settings were investigated. The drying time, moisture-effective diffusion, and activation energy of infrared dried apples were measured experimentally and statistically as a function of slice thicknesses, radiation intensity, and air velocity. The infrared intensity of 0.225, 0.130, and 0.341 W/cm2 , slice thicknesses of 6, 4, and 2 mm, and airflow of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 m/s were used to dry apple slices. The data shows that the drying time reduced as IR increased, but airflow and slice thickness increased. Eight statistical factors were used to compare 11 alternative mathematical drying models. The experimentally acquired drying curves were matched to the thin-layer drying equations. According to the calculations, the Midilli et al. equation had the greatest (efficiency and R2 ) and lowest (χ2 , sum of squared errors, standard error of estimate, standard error, standard deviation of difference) values. As a result, this equation is the best for modeling the drying curves of apple slices across all drying circumstances. The optimum moisture diffusivity value varied from 2.59 to 9.07 × 10-10 m2 /s. The mean activation energy was determined to be 19.02-29.83 kJ/mol under various experimental conditions.

Abstract:The convective drying kinetics of porous medium was investigated numerically. A mathematical model for forced convective drying was established to estimate the evolution of moisture content and temperature inside multi-layered porous medium. The set of coupled partial differential equations with the specified boundary and initial conditions were solved numerically using a MATLAB code. An experimental set-up of convective drying had been constructed and validated the theoretical model. The temperature and moisture content of the potato samples were dynamic measured and recorded during the drying process. Results indicate that thermal diffusion coefficient has significant positive impact on temperature distribution and mass diffusion coefficient might directly affect on the moisture content distribution. Soret effect has a significant impact on heat flux and temperature distribution in the presence of large temperature gradient.

Abstract:Drying is a very important unit operation in many industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and ceramics. In most cases, wet materials are dried by forced convection using hot air flow. Heat and mass transfer processes during drying have been studied by both experimental and numerical simulation methods. For the purpose of studying the mechanism of heat and mass transfer and stress-strain distribution during the hot air drying of biological porous medium, two-way coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical mathematical model has been developed to simulate the hot air convective drying process of biological porous media on basis of Fickian diffusion theory, Fourier’s law of heat conduction and thermoelasticity mechanics. The following assumptions were made in order to find a solution to the hot air drying model: the biological porous medium was homogeneous and isotropic; the deformation during drying was elastic. The transient model, composed of a system of partial differential equations, was solved by finite difference methods. The computational procedure was programmed using C language. Some physical and mechanical properties of carrot changing with dry basis moisture content and temperature were considered. The numerical results were compared with available experimental data obtained during the drying of potatoes and carrots. The relative errors between numerical results and experimental data were both less than 5%, which showed the numerical results obtained using the mathematical model were in good agreement with the experimental data. Numerical simulations of the drying curve variations and the spatio-temporal distributions of moisture, temperature and drying stresses and strains of carrot were also evaluated. The temperature and moisture content showed a gradient inside carrot slice during drying. As the drying process proceeded, the temperature inside the carrot slice initially increased to reach the wet bulb temperature of the environment and eventually leveled off. The dry basis moisture content inside the carrot slice decreased, with the fastest decreased at the heat and mass transfer interface, eventually reached the equilibrium moisture content of the potato and leveling off. Both the moisture content gradient and the temperature gradient decreased gradually in the thickness direction. The normal stress was negative in all parts of the carrot slice, and the larger the closer to the evaporation interface. The shear stress was positive in all parts of the carrot slice, and the maximum shear stress occurred in the middle of the carrot slice. As in the case of the normal stress, the values of the normal strain were negative. The change trend of normal strain with time was consistent with that of moisture content. These results indicated that the observed physical deformations were caused by the dehydration of carrot slice during drying. The influence of drying conditions, such as air temperature, air velocity and the thickness of porous media on drying process was analyzed. Analysis showed that under certain drying conditions, the higher air temperature, the greater air velocity and the thinner slice thickness, the shorter drying time. This work should help in developing an understanding of the relationship between mass and heat transfer, shrinkage, stress, strains and physical degradation.

Abstract:With regard to drying fresh grain prior to storage, the drying tower with a downward moving bed with hot air is often used, which always has high energy consumption during operation. To optimize the operation, according to the actual operating parameters of a corn drying tower with hot air, a heat balance model was established, and the heat transfer between the hot air and corn flow in a downward moving bed was analyzed. Since the downward moving time is short, the heat absorbed by corn significantly depends on the heat transfer coefficient, mainly the convective heat transfer, between the hot air and corn surface. To determine the convective heat transfer coefficient, a hot air drying experimental system for corn grains was established, and the effects of hot air temperature and wind speed on the central temperature and moisture content of corn grains were analyzed. Utilizing the heat balance model, the convective heat transfer coefficients between corn particles and hot air were calculated. The total convective heat transfer coefficients are in the range of 39.4–53.8 W/m2 · K. With an average value of 46.7 W/m2 · K, drying energy efficiencies in different drying zones in the drying tower were calculated, and the accuracy of the model was verified by the operation data. Due to the high inlet temperature of hot air, the maximum energy efficiency of the first zone is 60.15%, whereas when the temperature of hot air in the second drying tower is 140 °C, the energy efficiency is only 41.97%. Therefore, under the premise of ensuring the drying rate, the temperature of hot air of the second zone should be appropriately reduced to improve the whole drying energy efficiency.

Abstract:The heat and mass transfer models applicable to biological products at each element in a far-infrared fixed-bed dryer were established. The model was validated by comparing the simulation results with experimental data of black mushrooms (Lentinus edodes) in terms of moisture content and drying rate. The very good agreement suggests that the models for heat transfer and drying rate of biological products in the far-infrared fixed-dryer can be obtained by establishing the equations of radiation and dehydration in interspace elements. An unevenness of change in moisture content and drying rate on the same horizontal layer in the dryer was found. Thus it is necessary to take some measures to solve this nonuniformity in drying if the proposed dryer is employed.
[Study on the Low Temperature Drying of Components of Municipal Solid Waste and Its Model Analysis].

Abstract:The drying behaviors of four typical municipal solid waste (MSW) components (including waste paper, textile, pericarp and wood) were studied under low temperature. Effects of temperature on drying characteristic, thin layer drying models, effective moisture diffusion coefficient and activation energy were investigated in this paper. Experimental results showed that with increasing temperature, the drying rate increased, but the added value reduced gradually. Four mathematical models were used to simulate drying curves of MSW components. Modified Page model was found to give better predictions when moisture content was more than 25%. Based on the Fick's second law, the effective moisture diffusion coefficient for waste paper, textile, pericarp and wood were 8.24 x 10(-8)-23.67 x 10(-8), 7.73 x 10(-8)-12.56 x 10(-8), 3.57 x 10(-8)-14.18 x 10(-8) and 6.51 x 10(-8)-23.84 x 10(-8)m2 x s(-1). The activation energy determined through Arrhenius equation were 25.26, 10.75, 32.16 and 29.49 kJ x mol(-1), respectively. Carried on the similar dry experiments to practical MSW, It was found that Modified Page model was also suitable for simulating the drying process of practical MSW, its effective moisture diffusion coefficient and activation energy were 6.78 x 10(-8)-18.65 x 10(-8)m2 x s(-1) and 22.36 kJ x mol(-1), respectively.

Abstract:The objective of this work was to study and model the drying process of corn ears at different air temperatures. Thermodynamic properties associated with the drying process of this product were also determined. Corn ears with initial moisture content of 0.45 dry basis (kgw kgdm-1) were dried until they reached a final moisture content of 0.12 (kgw kgdm-1) at temperatures of 45, 55 and 65°C. Traditional models used to describe the drying process of several agricultural products were employed to fit the observed data of the drying process of corn ears. The effective diffusion coefficient (Def) was determined by means of an analytical solution of Fick’s second law. It was concluded that the Logarithmic model was the one that best fit the observed data representing the drying process. Def values increased with temperature increases, ranging from 5.490 x 10-10 to 1.163 x 10-9 m2 s-1. Based on the dependence of the drying constant of the Logarithmic model with temperature, thermodynamic properties were determined, concluding that the drying kinetics variation is dependent on the energy contributions of the surrounding environment.

Abstract:Hot-air coupled microwave was employed to dry lotus root slices. The effects of lotus root slice thickness (5, 8, 11, 14, and 17 mm), hot-air velocity (1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5 m/s), hot-air temperature (50, 55, 60, 65, and 70 °C), and microwave power density (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 W/g) on drying characteristics and kinetics were studied. Results indicated that the drying process involved both the accelerating and decelerating periods but no constant rate period. The drying rate reached the maximum of 1.52 kg/kg when microwave power density was 8 W/g and reached the minimum of 0.02 kg/kg at the last stage of drying. In addition, the drying kinetics of lotus root slices were also investigated using eleven previously reported models. Among the models, the Verma et al. model was the most suitable for description of the drying behaviors of lotus root slices based on R2, root-mean-square error, and chi-square. The moisture transfer from lotus root slices can be effectively described by Fick's diffusion model. Regardless of drying conditions, the effective diffusivity coefficients ranged from 8.23 × 10–7 to 7.08 × 10–6 m2/s, and their variations were mostly in agreement with those of moisture ratios. The activation energy of moisture diffusion related to lotus root slices was determined to be 13.754 kJ/mol.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
