Abstract:OBJECTIVE Introduce the trend and status quo of research on pollen components in order to provide the advices to the exploitation of pollen products and point put the problem exists in researching progress.METHODS To make a summery of article about the analysis methods and the existing characters of pollen components. RESULTS The mineral elements combined with flavonoids and free amino acids and the existing chemical value in pollen need further research.It is very important to find a rapid,expedient and scientific sample preparation method for the research of pollen ingredients.CONCLUSION To establish the chemical components fingerprint of pollen by the study of pollen special components through a combination HPLC,MS,NMR or IR technology was an important aspect.

Abstract:After wet digestion procedure,twenty inorganic elements in twelve kinds of common pollen were simultaneously determined by ICP-AES.The results had shown that the contents of essential elements such as K,Ca,Mg,Zn,Fe,Mn,and Cu were generally abundant,contents of Zn was more richer than Cu,in all pollens and contents of two or three certain elements above were relatively higher in lotus(K,Mg),camellia (Mn,Zn),pine(K,Fe,Mn) and vicia faba (Ca,Fe,Zn) pollen than others,and the concentration of heavy metals such as Cd,Pb and Hg were very lower or nondetectable in all samples.But more attention should be paid to that the concentration of Al was at a noticeable higher level in each kind of pollen,especially reaching highest in Pine pollen.The determination might be useful as well as looking forward to provide some information for exploitation of pollen.

Abstract:Pollen vigor is a prerequisite for fertilization and seed development. In the present research, the pollen of two tobacco varieties of Yunyan87 and K236 were collected in four different flowering stages. Pollen germination rate and the length of pollen tube were tested. Nine physiological and biochemical parameters of putrescine (Put), spermidine (Spd), spermine (Spm), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), malondialdehyde (MDA) and relative electrolyte leakage (REL) were examined. Multiple linear regression was adopted to determine the relationship between all parameters and pollen vigor. The results suggested that Spd could be used as a valuable parameter to predict pollen vigor for Yunyan87 and MDA could be used as a valuable parameter to predict pollen vigor for K236 in different flowering stages. The results also suggested that tobacco pollen collected in petals unfurling stage and full blooming stage had the highest vigor and unfurling stage was the best stage for pollen collection. Abstract:Objective:To determine and analyze the volatile compounds of twelve common species of bee pollen.Methods:The volatile compounds in twelve common species of bee pollen were analyzed and compared by GC-MS combined with simultaneous distillation and solvent extraction(SDE).Results:A total of 74 volatile components were determined in samples,including of 41 relatively common components and 33 relatively specific components.The analyzed compounds were mainly composed of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, lipids, benzenes, phenols and carboxylic acids,et al.,and pollen samples had quite different profiles.Relevant specific ingredients were characterized in pollen of Fagopyrum esculentum L, Helianthus annuus L., Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn,Rosa rugosa,Schisandra chinensis,and Vicia faba L.Conclusion:The volatile compounds tends to be species-specific.A relative food safety of bee pollen was indicated,as prohibited substances in daily used essences and pesticide residues were nearly inexistence in pollen volatiles.

Abstract:Being abundant in nutrition, pollen also has multi-biological activities with a great reputation of perfect food. Now pollen is widely used in food, medicine, cosmetics and feed additives. Current status of patents in pollen machining and use in China was introduced in this paper. Patents in different time, regions and applied areas were classified for calculation and comparison. Based on the analysis of patents, we put forward some suggestions in order to solve the problems in pollen machining and use.

Abstract:In order to provide a scientiifc basis for determining the optimum pollination period in cultivation and breeding of fruit trees, the progresses and achievements of effective pollination period were reviewed from proposal of concept to this day. The importance of stigmatic receptivity, pollen tube kinetics and ovule longetity on effective pollination period were expounded, and effects of many factors on the three parameters were summarized, including floral organ abortion, ovule development retardation, self-incompatibility, temperature, tree nutritional level, and so on. Besides, research prospect on effective pollination period in fruit trees were discussed, and guiding significance of the researches for breeding and cultivation was analyzed.

Abstract:Bee pollen has been praised for its good nutrition and therapeutic values. China is the largest producer in the world. Twelve common varieties of monofloral bee pollen collected from China's main producing regions were selected for nutritional composition analysis, including proximate contents, dietary fibers, amino acid distribution, fatty acid composition, and mineral elements. The proximate compositions mostly met the specifications regulating pollen load quality of China. Proline and glutamic acids were found to be the predominant amino acids in the form of both total amino and free amino acids. Lysine was the relative limiting amino acid. The percentage of total essential amino acids (TEAA) to total amino acids (TAA) reached the nutrition recommendation of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). The major fatty acids, presented as mean values, were C18:3 (25.1%), C16:0 (19.6%), C18:1 (17.3%), C18:2 (8.78%), C22:0 (4.07%), and C18:0 (2.96%) acids. The proportions of C18:3 were generally higher than those of C18:2, and the ratio of total unsaturated fatty acids (TUS) to total saturated fatty acids (TS) was >1.0, except for Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. pollen for the characteristic absence of C18:3 acids. High levels of beneficial elements such as K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, Mn. and Cu were observed in pollen samples. The contents of detrimental trace elements of Cd, Pb, and Hg were primarily lower or not detected. However, more attention should be paid to a large amount of Al, with a concentration of >100 mg/kg DW in most samples. There were some significant differences between samples. On the whole, the Chinese bee pollen was evaluated as a good complement to diet.

Abstract:The quantity,size,malformation rates,activity and germination rate of pollens of two 'Zuili' plums,different in maturing period(early and late-maturing),were investigated to study the pollen fertility and compatibility.The result showed that the pollen quantity of late-maturing Zuili was smaller than that of early-maturing variety.There was no significant difference between their pollen malformation rates and activities.But the pollen germination rate of late-maturing 'Zuili' was significantly higher than that of the early-maturing variety.Therefore,the pollen fertility of the late-maturing variety was higher than that of the early-maturing variety.

Abstract:Using light microscope,pollen morphology of principal 31 species belonging to 19 families of crops,vegetables and fruits in South China has been studied.The taxa include 4 species from grain crops,16 from vegetable crops,8 from fruits,3 from oil crops and economic crops.Result shows that many species or genus of the crops can be re-cognized through their pollens characters of size,aperture,surface sculpture and so on.Despite the similarities of pollen morphology of different species in the same family,we can still distinguish some species by their minor diffe-rences existing among them.For instance,the wild species of Poaceae can be distinguished from cultivated crop by their size and many other features.In this study,we measured the oblateness(the length's ratio of the equator axis and the polar axis) and the long-axis length of exine mesh for Cruciferous vegetable pollen(Brassica campestris Linn.,B.alboglabra Bailey,B.parachinensis L.H.Bailey and B.chinensis Linn.).The results demonstrate that the differences of the long-axis length of exine mesh among the above four Cruciferae pollen are moderate.However,the oblateness was different significantly,which provide strong evidence for discriminating the four species in the Cruciferae.We further compared the exine mesh of the Cruciferae pollen between modern pollen and the anthropogenic material from the Ming-Qing cultural layer at the Fuqikou site of Chongqing.It is demonstrated that fossil Cruciferae pollen is likely a vegetable plant belongs to Brassica parachinensis L.H.Bailey.Moreover,the study on the diameter of rice pollen from rice field shows that the pollen sizes range from 34 to 38 μm,which can be applied to the rice pollen identification of the Holocene together with other pollen features.

Abstract:Pollen morphology was studied for 35 species (including two varieties) of cultivated crops representing 14 families, from Anhui Province. We summarize their pollen identification characteristics, their geographical distribution as cultivated crops, areas of origin, and cultivation history. Their ecological significance as cultivated crops is also discussed. Such pollen morphological investigations provide important diagnostic information towards identification of fossil and sub-fossil grains of related taxa, for example in archaeological settings.

Abstract:AbstractPollinators provide important pollination services for crops around the world. In China, numerous studies have been conducted on pollinators within agroecosystems, yet a comprehensive review of such research remains to be completed. This study discusses the existing knowledge of pollinator diversity in Chinese agroecosystems, examines the provision of pollination services, and identifies key achievements and limitations. We propose a series of conservation and management actions to promote pollinator health and ecosystem services in these agroecosystems: (1) long‐term monitoring of pollinator populations, (2) designing agricultural landscapes that are conducive to pollinators, and (3) implementing microscale habitat modifications to improve conditions for pollinators.

Abstract:Pollen morphology of selected taxa from the Taiyue mountain,Shanxi Province,North China are investigated in the present study.Eighty-six species and 2 varieties of 74 genera belonging to 25 families flowering in the autumn were described and illustrated under light microscope (LM) and scaning electron microscopy (SEM).The pollen grains were mostly subsphaeroidal(56.8％) or prolate(27.3％)in addition to some spherical and oblate.P/E values of Lilium lancifolium and Heracleum schansianum Fedde ex Wolff were the maximum,both of 1.89,and that of Circaea alpina L.was the minimum (0.71).The maximum pollen grain is Lilium lancifolium (117.5 × 62.3 μm);and the minimum pollen grain is Pedicularis spicata Pall.(12.5 × 10.3μm).Aperture type is mainly 3-colpate and 3-colporate with a percentage of 35.2％ and 26.1 ％ respectively,while others contains 3-syncolpate,2-syncolpate,pantocolpate,3-apeture,6-colpate,single-colpate,3(-4) colporate and 4-colpate.The surface ornamentation is mostly microreticulate,spinulose and granulate with the percentages of 46.6 ％,17.0％ and 13.6％ respectively.Other exine ornamentations,such as reticulate,striate-perforate,retipilate,microspinulose,microspinulose-granulate are also observed.Pollen morphology in different genera of the same family,different species of the same genera,and different regions of the same species were also discussed in this study.Observation and description on pollen morphological characteristics of these species are important keys to the identification of fossil pollen grains of related taxa.The paleoenvironment implication of the pollen grains of the Taiyue mountain is discussed in detail especially 3 types of the family Asteraceae,which is significant for estimating the palaeoclimate and paleaoenvironment conditions by utilizing the fossil pollen record.

Abstract:Insect pollinators play a vital role in global crop pollination. Due to climate change, agricultural intensification, and urbanization in recent decades, insect pollinator abundance and species richness have declined rapidly at global and regional scales. Insufficient pollination on croplands is becoming a significant challenge worldwide. In recent years, planting of field-side companion plants that flower concurrently in the vacant space on croplands has been proposed as an effective measure in developed countries to improve pollinator abundance and diversity. These companion plants can provide stable food sources (such as nectar and pollen) and nesting sites for pollinators. Related studies in China are still limited. We reviewed the global research status on the effects of field-side companion plants on crop pollination services, focused on the factors influencing the impacts of co-flowering plants on crop pollination, optimal selection principles for companion plants, and put forward perspectives for application in Chinese agriculture.
