Abstract:Microbial biocontrol agents (BCAs) are generally used for controlling plant diseases via antagonistic mechanisms including competition, antibiosis, parasitism, and cross-protection. Some BCAs can even promote plant growth, and provide induced systemic resistance (ISR), i. e., induce the plants to have resistance against pathogens including phytopathogenic fungi, bacteria and virus, and in some cases, pest insects and nematodes. ISR is characterized by non-specific, wide spectrum and systemic. It is phenotypically similar to the systemic acquired resistance (SAR) induced by the infection of pathogens, and with the same efficiency but without hypersensitive response (HR) and visible symptoms in plant as SAR, which is helpful to open a new way to develop and improve safer and environmentally friendly strategies for plant protection. In this paper, the research advances on ISR mediated by biocontrol fungi and bacteria, elicitors or determinants, and signaling transduction pathways were summarized, with more emphasis on the biochemical and cytological mechanisms of host plant defense reaction induced by free-living and endophytic BCAs. The potential application of ISR in biocontrol of plant diseases was also discussed.

Abstract:In this review, we first briefly introduced the typical Bacillus biocontrol mechanisms. Then, we discussed in detail the new mechanisms of pathogen QS interference and reshaping of the soil microbiota, and the "cry for help" mechanism was also introduced. Finally, two emerging strategies for enhancing the biocontrol efficacy of Bacillus agents, including the construction of synthetic microbial consortia and the application of rhizosphere‐derived prebiotics, were proposed. Species of the genus Bacillus have been widely used for the biocontrol of plant diseases in the demand for sustainable agricultural development. New mechanisms underlying Bacillus biocontrol activity have been revealed with the development of microbiome and microbe‐plant interaction research. In this review, we first briefly introduce the typical Bacillus biocontrol mechanisms, such as the production of antimicrobial compounds, competition for niches/nutrients, and induction of systemic resistance. Then, we discussed in detail the new mechanisms of pathogen quorum sensing interference and reshaping of the soil microbiota. Abstract:The phenomenon of induced resistance to postharvest disease in fruits and vegetables has been studied intensively in recent years. Biotic and abiotic inducers, including microbial agents, chemical compounds, physical treatment and nature substance, have been used in fruits and vegetables. The mechanism of resistance has been studied on cell structure, physiological and biochemical changes of host. In this paper, some of the strategy and defense expressed in postharvest fruits and vegetables will be discussed in relation to how the induced plants may restrict disease development.

Abstract:This article reviews the elicitors and mechanism of induced resistance to post-harvest disease in fruits.The biotic and abiotic elicitors,including microbial agents,chemical compounds,physical treatment and nature substance,have been used in fruits.The mechanism of resistance has been studied on cell structure,physiological and biochemical changes of fruits.In addition,the effect of timing of post-harvest elicitor treatment and environment on the degree of elicitation and the potential for inducing local acquired resistance,systemic acquired resistance and/or induced systemic resistance to reduce post-harvest disease in fruits is also discussed.

Abstract:Highlights • To overcome the major challenges of global food security and environmental and social problems caused by the extensive use of chemical pesticides, developments of modern green sustainable management strategies are urgently needed for the control of crop diseases. • A deeper understanding of the principles of plant immunity and induced host immunity offers potentials for reducing the use of chemical pesticides and paves the way for sustainable agriculture. • The sustainable environment-friendly disease prevention and control technologies based on plant immunity inducers are comprehensively summarized in this review. • The significance of the application of plant immunity inducers for plant disease control is systematically summarized. • By focusing on research advances of plant immunity inducers, this review offers future perspectives of plant immunity inducers and provides a theoretical reference for researchers. Background Crops are constantly attacked by various pathogens. These pathogenic microorganisms, such as fungi, oomycetes, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes, threaten global food security by causing detrimental crop diseases that generate tremendous quality and yield losses worldwide. Chemical pesticides have undoubtedly reduced crop damage; however, in addition to increasing the cost of agricultural production, the extensive use of chemical pesticides comes with environmental and social costs. Therefore, it is necessary to vigorously develop sustainable disease prevention and control strategies to promote the transition from traditional chemical control to modern green technologies. Plants possess sophisticated and efficient defense mechanisms against a wide range of pathogens naturally. Immune induction technology based on plant immunity inducers can prime plant defense mechanisms and greatly decrease the occurrence and severity of plant diseases. Reducing the use of agrochemicals is an effective way to minimize environmental pollution and promote agricultural safety. Aim of Review : The purpose of this work is to offer valuable insights into the current understanding and future research perspectives of plant immunity inducers and their uses in plant disease control, ecological and environmental protection, and sustainable development of agriculture. Key Scientific Concepts of Review : In this work, we have introduced the concepts of sustainable and environment-friendly concepts of green disease prevention and control technologies based on plant immunity inducers. This article comprehensively summarizes these recent advances, emphasizes the importance of sustainable disease prevention and control technologies for food security, and highlights the diverse functions of plant immunity inducers-mediated disease resistance. The challenges encountered in the potential applications of plant immunity inducers and future research orientation are also discussed. Abstract:While conventional chemical fungicides directly eliminate pathogens, plant immunity inducers activate or prime plant immunity. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in understanding the mechanisms of immune regulation in plants. The development and application of plant immunity inducers based on the principles of plant immunity represent a new field in plant protection research. In this review, we describe the mechanisms of plant immunity inducers in terms of plant immune system activation, summarize the various classes of reported plant immunity inducers (proteins, oligosaccharides, chemicals, and lipids), and review methods for the identification or synthesis of plant immunity inducers. The current situation, new strategies, and future prospects in the development and application of plant immunity inducers are also discussed.

Abstract:This article reviewed the inducing resistance to disease and antibacterial mechanism of chitosan,and it pointed out that chitosan can induce plant to strengthen self-defence reaction under in vitro condition and produce resistance,and can inhibit the growth of many plant pathogens for direct action on pathogenic micro-organisms. But,there exist many problems needed to be resolved in inducing resistance mechanism of chitosan,including that the transfer paths of inducing resistant signal among cells are unknown,and whether the inhibition mechanism in different microorganisms of chitosan are the same.

Abstract:Abstract In agro-ecosystem, plant pathogens hamper food quality, crop yield, and global food security. Manipulation of naturally occurring defense mechanisms in host plants is an effective and sustainable approach for plant disease management. Various natural compounds, ranging from cell wall components to metabolic enzymes have been reported to protect plants from infection by pathogens and hence provide specific resistance to hosts against pathogens, termed as induced resistance. It involves various biochemical components, that play an important role in molecular and cellular signaling events occurring either before (elicitation) or after pathogen infection. The induction of reactive oxygen species, activation of defensive machinery of plants comprising of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidative components, secondary metabolites, pathogenesis-related protein expression (e.g. chitinases and glucanases), phytoalexin production, modification in cell wall composition, melatonin production, carotenoids accumulation, and altered activity of polyamines are major induced changes in host plants during pathogen infection. Hence, the altered concentration of biochemical components in host plants restricts disease development. Such biochemical or metabolic markers can be harnessed for the development of “pathogen-proof” plants. Effective utilization of the key metabolites-based metabolic markers can pave the path for candidate gene identification. This present review discusses the valuable information for understanding the biochemical response mechanism of plants to cope with pathogens and genomics-metabolomics-based sustainable development of pathogen proof cultivars along with knowledge gaps and future perspectives to enhance sustainable agricultural production.

Abstract:Plant diseases pose a major and constant threat to crop production and food security in modern agriculture. While application of pesticides can be a cost to the environment and human health, development and utilization of resistant cultivars is the most effective, economical, and eco-friendly approach to disease control. Using resistant cultivars is especially important for organic agriculture. Increasing breakthroughs have been made in understanding the mechanism of plant–microbe interaction. A current challenge now is how to apply the new knowledge to more effectively create disease-resistant crop cultivars. Integration of plant breeding and plant pathology is necessary to underpin crop improvement for food and other plant-based production. In this review, we summarize our current understanding on the mechanism of plant–microbe interaction and discuss the strategies for disease-resistance breeding of crop cultivars.

Abstract:The pathogen Pseudomonas syringae , responsible for a variety of diseases, poses a considerable threat to global crop yields. Emerging biocontrol strategies employ antagonistic microorganisms, utilizing phyllosphere microecology and systemic resistance to combat this disease. However, the interactions between phyllosphere microbial dynamics and the activation of the plant defense system remain poorly understood. Here we show significant alterations in phyllosphere microbiota structure and plant gene expression following the application of biocontrol agents. We reveal enhanced collaboration and integration of Sphingomonas and Methylobacterium within the microbial co-occurrence network. Notably, Sphingomonas inhibits P. syringae by disrupting pathogen chemotaxis and virulence. Additionally, both Sphingomonas and Methylobacterium activate plant defenses by upregulating pathogenesis-related gene expression through abscisic acid, ethylene, jasmonate acid, and salicylic acid signaling pathways. Our results highlighted that biocontrol agents promote plant health, from reconstructing beneficial microbial consortia to enhancing plant immunity. The findings enrich our comprehension of the synergistic interplays between phyllosphere microbiota and plant immunity, offering potential enhancements in biocontrol efficacy for crop protection.

Abstract:Recent applications of techniques in plant molecular biology and biotechnology to the study of host-pathogen interactions have resulted in the identification and cloning of numerous genes involved in the defense responses of plants following pathogen infection. These genes that express proteins, peptides, or antimicrobial compounds are directly toxic to pathogens or reduce their growth in situ; directly inhibit pathogen virulence products or enhance plant structural defense genes, directly or indirectly activate general plant defense responses; and improve resistance genes involved in the hypersensitive response and in the interactions with avirulence factors. The introduction and expression of these genes in a range of transgenic plant species have shown that the development of fungal pathogens can be significantly reduced. Induced defense responses have the potential to provide useful broad-spectrum disease resistance.
