Determination of total flavonoids and total phenolics of different vegetative organs in Emilia sonchifolia (Linn.) DC

Abstract:Objective:To establish the analytical methods for determinating the contents of total flavonoids and total phenolics of different vegetative organs in Emilia sonchifolia (Linn.) DC. Methods:The content of total flavonoids,expressed as rutin equivalents,was measured by using the NaNO2-Al(NO3)3-NaOH colorimetric assay,and the content of total phenolics,expressed as gallic acid equivalents,was measured by using the Folin-Ciocalteu assay. Results:The good linearity between concentrations and absorbances of rutin was found in the range of 0.01-0.08 mg/ml,the average recovery was 100.30%with a RSD of 1.72%,the contents of total flavonoids in leaves,stems and roots of Emilia sonchifolia (Linn.) DC were 2.54%,1.78% and 1.27%,respectively; the good linearity between concentrations and absorbances of gallic acid was found in the range of 0.002-0.010 mg/ml,the average recovery was 99.86% with a RSD of 1.92%,the contents of total phenolics in leaves,stems and roots of Emilia sonchifolia (Linn.) DC were 21.28%,12.77% and 8.51%,respectively. Conclusion:These two proposed methods are sensitive,precise,accurate and reproducible,and they are suitable for the determination of total flavonoids and total phenolics in Emilia sonchifolia (Linn.) DC.
