Abstract:Cut rose (Rosa hybrida L.)flowers of three cultivars‘Angeliqu’,‘Prima Donna’, and‘Red Success’were studied. Ethylene production and ACC content were measured in five different parts of these rose flowers, petals, stamen, styles and stigmas, receptacle and ovary, and calyx. The result indicated that change patterns of ethylene production of intact flowers depended on the change patterns of petals. The difference in change patterns of ethylene production between cultivars also depended on the petals. For the three cultivars, similar patterns of ethylene production were obtained in other parts except petals, and the peak of ethylene production appeared clearly before flower full opening. In the earlier stages of flowering, the proportion of petals to whole flowers of the three cultivars was much lower in ACC content than in ethylene production, while the opposite results were obtained in other parts, especially in stamen, which had higher proportion of ACC content but lower in ethylene production. However, different tendencies were observed depending on the cultivars in the later stages of flowering. Based on the results above, it was supposed that a large quantity of ACC synthesized in other parts might be transported to petals during the process of flowering, and there might be difference in transportation and diffusion of ACC between the cultivars with different ethylene change patterns.
