Abstract:Laboratory bioassay and field experiment were conducted to evaluate the toxicity and field control efficacy of pyriproxyfen and its mixture with organosilicon to B-biotype Bemisia tabaci.The laboratory bioassay indicated that pyriproxyfen had strong ovicidal activity against B.tabaci and high activity against B.tabaci nymphs,but had low toxicity to B.tabaci adults.After the adults were exposed to pyriproxyfen-treated eggplant leaves for 48 h,their oviposition on untreated eggplant leaves was not affected,but the egg hatching rate was sharply lowered,suggesting that pyriproxyfen had high transovarial activity.Organosilicon auxiliary agent did not show any synergistic effect when mixed with pyriproxyfen.Field trials showed that pyriproxyfen could effectively control the B.tabaci nymphs on eggplants,but could not effectively control the adults.

Abstract:Sgnificant differences in transovarial transmission ratio of pebrine among commercial silkworm races were observed in differenct production seasons in Zhejiang Province. Resuluts showed that Japanese strains were more susceptible to pebrin disease than the Chinese strains, and high silk yield varieties were more susceptible than that with relatively low yield varieties. Moreover, significant differences of pebrin incidence were also found between eggs produced in different production units and years.

Abstract:Effects of different Azadirachtin concentrations on Liriomyza trifolii(Burgess)survival and oviposition were studied. The results showed that azadirachtin concentration had no significant affect on egg hatch. But it could induce high larval and pupa mortality. Its lethal effect on pupa was greater than on larval. It had remarkable oviposition repellency on Liriomyza trifolii(Burgess)adult.

Abstract:The geographical distribution and host associations of Longidorus in mainland China were determined from a comprehensive survey. Among 2,103 soil samples collected from 12 provinces of China during 2008–2010, nine Longidorus species were identified based on morphological characters: L. henanus Xu & Cheng 1992; L. litchii Xu & Cheng 1992; L. hangzhouensis Zheng et al. 2001; L. pisi Edward, Misra & Singh 1964; L. macromucronatus Siddiqi 1962; L. fangi Xu & Cheng 1991; L. camelliae Zheng et al. 2000; L. jonesi Siddiqi 1962; and L. fursti Heyns et al. 1987. In this study, we compile new data on the distribution and hosts of Longidorus in China and the available historical records reported from China. Longidorus henanus has the most widespread distribution in China, while L. litchii is found only in Fujian province, and L. pisi is recorded for the first time in China. The hosts of the genus Longidorus in mainland China included 39 known and 3 unknown plant genera, all of which are perennial woody plants. No records were from cultivated annual crops.

Abstract:According to the morphological characters and morphometrics,three species in genus Hirschmanniella were identified.They were H.oryzae,H.mucronata and H.gracilis.Some morphometrics of H.oryzae and H.mucronata varied slightly from the original descriptions of type specimens,most of other morphometric data were within the reference value range.Compared to the original descriptions of type specimen,the data of H.gracilis were smaller.This was the first report of H.gracilis in Zhejiang Province,eastern China.

Abstract:This paper surveys and compares parasitism of the striped stem borer, Chilo suppressalis, in single rice, double rice and wild rice fields in Anji, Jiaxing and Lanxi, representing three significantly different natural environments and rice culture systems in Zhejiang province. Abstract:Leafminers are the mostimportant insect pests of vegetables inHangzhou area, Zhejiang province, SoutheastChina as well as in the rest of China, but havenever been investigated for speciescomposition, relative abundance and theirassociated parasitoids. A survey was conductedin four localities of Hangzhou area during 1998–2000to determine the distribution ofleafminers and their parasitoids on vegetablecrops and weeds in the field. Over 20,000leafminers were collected and reared. Theleafminer species found were Liriomyzasativae , L. chinensis and Chromatomyia horticola , with C.horticola and L. sativae the mostabundant in spring and autumn, respectively.About 11,000 parasitoid adults were reared fromthe leafminers collected. In total 14hymenopteran species of four families (onebraconid, 10 eulophids, one megaspilid and onepteromalid) were found. Eleven species werereared from C. horticola , nine from L. sativae and seven from L. chinensis . Opius caricivorae and Chrysocharispentheus were the dominant species. Sevenspecies were recorded from L. chinensis for the first time. Eleven parasitoid specieswere reared from leafminers on two weeds ( Veronica undulata and Sonchusoleraceus ). Parasitoids caused 48.5–68.8%parasitism on leafminers on crops and 83.7%parasitism on leafminers on weeds in the latergrowing season of vegetable crops. The resultssuggest that leafminer populations areregulated to a certain extent by their naturalenemies in the field.
WASPS PARASITIZING OVERWINTERING LARVAE OF STRIPED STEM BORER( LEPIDOPTERA: PYRALIDAE)

Abstract:The main wasp species of parasitizing overwintering larvae of striped stem borer(SSB),Chilo suppressalis(Lepidoptera:Pyralidae), and their parasitic rates in some areas of Zhejiang, China were surveyed, and their emergence dynamics were also observed. The results showed that, parasitic rates of SSB larvae in Lanxi were low and only one wasp species Apanteles chilonis was collected. In larvae collected both from Anji and Jiaxin,two other species, Microgaster russata and Eriborus sinicus, were frequently found. In these two areas, the parasitic rates by the three wasps in 2nd rice season reached 18～29%,significantly higher than those in single rice season. A. chilonis and M. russata individuals emerged until November, while the emergence of E. sinicus lasted until sometime after mid November. After overwintering,E. sinicus emerged obviously earlier than the former two, indicating great difference in emergence dynamics among the wasps.
Identification of Gonatophragmium mori Causing Mulberry Zonate Leaf Spot Disease and Characterization of Their Biological Enemies in Guangxi, China

Abstract:Mulberry zonate leaf spot disease (MZLSD) is an important fungal disease of mulberry trees, which seriously affects the productivity and quality of mulberry leaves. MZLSD has been widely reported in sericultural production areas in Guangxi, China, in recent years. In this study, the causal agent of MZLSD was isolated from symptomatic samples and identified as Gonatophragmium mori (Acrospermaceae) based on morphological characterization and molecular analyses using nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU rDNA). Pathogenicity tests confirmed that G. mori is the pathogen responsible for MZLSD. Furthermore, we isolated antagonistic endophytic bacteria (AEB) from healthy mulberry leaves. Plate confrontation experiments showed that the lipopeptide crude extracts (LPCE) of three endophytic bacteria can inhibit the growth of G. mori, and the diameter of the antibacterial circle reaches more than 60 mm when their concentration of LPCE is 200 mg/ml. Light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed that LPCE caused drastic changes in mycelial morphology. Fluorescence microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed that the LPCE-induced apoptosis-like cell death in G. mori hyphae. Finally, based on morphological and molecular features, we identified the three isolates as Bacillus subtilis DS07, B. subtilis DS32, and B. velezensis Q6, respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first time to identify G. mori by combining characterization and molecular analyses, and we provide timely information about the use of biocontrol agents for suppression of G. mori.

Abstract:The complex influence of rice variety, fertilization timing, and insecticides on the population dynamics of Sogatella furcifera (Horvath) and Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), and their natural enemies was studied in rice in Hangzhou, China. In the early season, S. furcifera adults immigrated to japonica Xiushui 11 (XS11) in a much higher density than to indica-japonica hybrid Xieyou 413 (XY413), which resulted in a higher density of the egg population of successive generations in XS11, while the peak density of the population peak of the 2nd generation in XY413 was higher due to a higher growth rate. In both of the rice varieties, spraying organic phosphorous triazophos in mid-season (during the 1st generation of the planthoppers) induced a population resurgence of the 2nd generations of S. furcifera and N. lugens . The main mechanism for the resurgence was the stimulation of reproduction of the 1st-generation adults and reduction of the density of predators, which in turn increased the survival of the planthoppers. Plots that were fertilized early attracted more N. lugens immigrants, but did not necessarily attract S. furcifera. Reproduction of the S. furcifera immigrants was enhanced by early fertilization of the fields of both rice varieties. The negative correlation between population growth rate from the 1st to the 2nd generation of S. furcifera and the density of spiders during the same period demonstrates the potential of predators in the natural control of rice planthoppers.
Identification of Two Common Larval Parasitic Wasps of Ectropis Obliqua and Ectropis Grisescens (lepidoptera: Geometridae)

Abstract:Ectropis obliqua（Prout） and Ectropis grisescens Warren（Lepidopotera: Geometridae） are two of the most destructive chewing pests in China’s tea plantations. Two of the parasitic wasps, which previously reported as Apanteles spp.（Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Microgastrinae）, can play important role in controlling Ectropis spp.during the larval stage in nature. In order to determine the species names and morphological differences of the two wasps, and to confirm whether these two species are common parasitic wasps of E. obliqua and E. grisescens, we identified the wasp specimens emerged from E. obliqua and E. grisescens that were collected from 22 locations in 8 provinces of China and reared in the laboratory, and compared the COI sequences of the voucher specimens with those of known species recorded in the BOLD database. The findings revealed that both parasitic wasps emerged from E. obliqua as well as E. grisescens during the larval stage. Based on morphological and molecular data, these two species of Apanteles spp. were identified as Protapanteles immunis（Haliday, 1834） and Parapanteles hyposidrae（Wilkinson, 1928）. In conclusion, this study has confirmed the specific species names and morphological characteristics of the two wasps reported as Apanteles sp. in China more than 40 years ago,which are common larval parasitic wasps of E. obliqua and E. grisescens, and the P. immunis is recorded for the first time in China. These results provide a scientific basis for accurately identifying indigenous dominant parasitic wasps, which might help manage E. obliqua and E. grisescens.
Comparison of susceptibility to insecticides between the B biotype and a non-B biotype of Bemisia tabaci in Zhejiang.

Abstract:The susceptibility to 5% EC imidacloprid and 5% EC pyriproxyfen between the invasive B biotype and the non-B ZHJ-1 population of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius)in Zhejiang, China, was compared in the laboratory. The eggs, nymphs and adults of the ZHJ-1 population were obviously or significantly more susceptible to both imidacloprid and pyriproxyfen than the B biotype. Pyriproxyfen showed high levels of ovicidal effects and exerted over 90% mortality on eggs of both populations of B. tabaci at a concentration of 0.25 mg/L active ingredient. Differences in susceptibility to insecticides between biotypes of B. tabaci are speculated to be an important mechanism for the B biotype to displace non-B biotypes of the insect.

Abstract:Chilo suppressalis Walker (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is one of the most destructive pests occurring in the rice-growing regions of Asia. Parasitoids, mainly egg parasitoids, have been of interest for several years even with practical used cases. Therefore, the potential impact of insecticides on natural enemies needs great attention. In this study, chlorantraniliprole was evaluated for its impact on C. suppressalis and two dominant parasitic wasps. Bioassays showed that chlorantraniliprole had negligible toxicity to Eriborus terebrans but was significantly toxic to Chelonus munakatae; the mortality exceeded 50% when the concentration reached 46.83 ng/cm<sup>2</sup>. Enzyme assays suggested that the significantly different carboxylesterase activity may be involved in the high-level detoxification metabolism of E. terebrans. According to the results of enzyme gene correlation analysis, P450s may be the dominant factor in the detoxification metabolism of C. munakatae. In addition, the ryanodine receptor C-terminus of C. suppressalis (CsRyR), C. munakatae (CmRyR) and E. terebrans (EtRyR) were successfully cloned. Different amino acids at resistance mutation I4758 M between susceptible C. suppressalis (I) and parasitic wasps (M) may be related to susceptibility differences. Simulated docking showed that CsRyR and CmRyR can interact with chlorantraniliprole but not EtRyR. More interaction forces were formed between CsRyR and chlorantraniliprole than CmRyR. Furthermore, a Pi-Pi T-shape formed between 73PHE in CsRyR and the benzene ring in chlorantraniliprole. These results indicated that both detoxification metabolism and the target site could mediate the susceptibility difference between C. suppressalis and its parasitic wasps.

Revalidation of morphological characteristics and multiplex PCR for the identification of three congener invasive Liriomyza species (Diptera: Agromyzidae) in China

Abstract:Due to varietal differences, diminutive size, and similar morphological characters, it is difficult to classify and identify Liriomyza spp., a genus comprised of economically-important, highly-polyphagous insect pests. In this study, we reconfirmed the morphological characteristics of three closely-related invasive leafminers, L. trifolii, L. sativae, and L. huidobrensis . Morphological results showed that characteristics imparted by the male genitalia were the most reliable morphological features for identification . The colors exhibited by vertical setae were variable among species, and the ratio of the length of the ultimate section of vein CuA 1 divided by penultimate section also varied within species. Although the patterns of abdominal tergites were diverse among Liriomyza spp., L. trifolii exhibited a unique pattern with a yellow patch at the 5 th black visible tergite; this pattern can be profiled as a prominent characteristic for morphological identification. In order to identify the three Liriomyza spp. quickly and accurately, we developed an improved molecular identification method using multiplex PCR based on the gene encoding mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I ( COI ); this method enabled direct identification based on the size of amplified products. The results of this study provide a valuable reference for the identification of Liriomyza spp., which will ultimately improve our ability to control individual species.

Biological traits of the zoophytophagous predatory mirid Nesidiocoris poppiusi (Heteroptera: Miridae), a candidate biocontrol agent in China

Abstract:Mirid predators are increasingly used in biological control of multiple greenhouse crops pests. However, due to great morphological similarity and tiny body size, some mirid predators have been largely confused with their allied species. Nesidiocoris tenuis Reuter as a commercial mirid predator was confused largely with Nesidiocoris poppiusi Carvalho in China. To evaluate the biocontrol potential of N. poppiusi, its biological traits and the functional response to Bemisia tabaci Gennadius were studied compared with N. tenuis under laboratory conditions. The results showed that no significant differences of the developmental times from the first instar to adult stages between the 2 mirids fed on Corcyra cephalonica Stainton eggs were observed, while N. poppiusi had better population growth parameters than N. tenuis. Under the condition with prey, both female and male of N. poppiusi lived significantly longer than those of N. tenuis. It could lay 74.0 eggs, which was significantly higher than that of N. tenuis (30.2 eggs). Under the condition without prey, both N. poppiusi and N. tenuis couldn't complete development to adulthood on tomato, tobacco, muskmelon, and cabbage leaves, however, tobacco and tomato were more suitable than the other 2 plants. A type II functional response was observed for both males and females of the 2 predators. Nesidiocoris poppiusi females consumed significantly more B. tabaci pupae than N. tenuis when prey densities were large than 30. Our results indicated that N. poppiusi could be a promising candidate for biological control of B. tabaci.
[Grey System Analysis on Dominant Natural Enemies Influencing Aphis Gosspyii Population].

Abstract:The populations of Aphis gosspyii and its natural enemies before cotton boll stage were investigated systematically in 1983, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1994 and 1995. The relationship between daily total predation of natural enemies and Aphis gosspyii population size was studied with the grey system theory and method, and the relational grade of various natural enemies to ideal superior natural enemies was analyzed. The results show that Propylaca japonica was the major natural enemy influencing Aphis gossypii, followed by Chrysopa septempunctata, then by Therdion octomaculatum and Erigonidium graminicola.

Abstract:Abstract Spodoptera frugiperda is the main pest of corn with a high level of attack intensity. Utilization of natural enemies both predators and parasitoids can be lured using zinnia flowers could be an effective control technique in suppressing armyworm pest populations. Pests hate the smells and taste of botanical insecticides a mixed of maja fruit and giant milkweed leaves which contain secondary metabolites such as volatile, pectin, saponins and tannins. This study aims to determine the effect of zinnia flowers and the application of botanical insecticides in suppressing armyworm populations. This research was carried out in Padakkalawa, Mattirobulu District, Pinrang Regency and Universitas Hasanuddin’s Laboratory of Insect and Plant Disease Relations. The research observed pest intensity, larval population and natural enemies. The results showed that the highest attack intensity was observed in the control treatment with an average of 12.59%/plant. The highest observed larval population was in the control with an average of 2.13 individuals/plant. In observing natural enemy arthropods in all observation techniques, the highest population of natural enemy arthropods was in the combination treatment of zinnia flowers and botanical insecticides with the most species being Lasius niger or ants which was significantly different from the control treatment. The results showed that the combination of insect plants and the application of botanical pesticides had an effect on the population and attack intensity of S. frugiperda larvae and populations of natural enemy arthropods.
Isolation and identification of Metarhizium guizhouense Xct1 and its pathogenicity to Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Abstract:Background The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is one of the most destructive invasive pests causing serious damage to maize crops in China. At present, the use of chemical pesticides is the main method to prevent and control S. frugiperda . However, the excessive use of chemical pesticides not only causes toxicity in humans and animals but also pollutes the environment and causes public harm. In this context, the present study aimed to isolate, identify and evaluate the pathogenicity of the native strain of Metarhizium guizhouense against eggs, larvae and pupae of S. frugiperda under laboratory conditions. Results The fungal isolate was identified as M. guizhouense (Xct1) based on its morphological and molecular characteristics by sequencing ITS, β-tubulin and EF1-α gene. Meanwhile, the fungal isolate was highly pathogenic to eggs of the S. frugiperda , at the highest concentration of 1 × 10 8 spores/ml, the cumulative egg hatching rate was only 8.33% at 10 days post exposure. After 10 days of exposure to the highest concentration of 1 × 10 8 spores/ml, the LC 50 values for the first–fifth larval instars of S. frugiperda were 8.12 × 10 4 , 1.11 × 10 5 , 5.55 × 10 5 , 3.87 × 10 6 and 1.43 × 10 7 spores/ml, respectively. Conclusions The pathogenicity of M. guizhouense Xct1 to S. frugiperda larvae gradually decreased with increasing the developmental stages. Metarhizium guizhouense Xct1 was more pathogenic to egg and younger larvae of S. frugiperda . This provides a basis for determining the optimal period of control.
