Abstract:Laboratory bioassay and field experiment were conducted to evaluate the toxicity and field control efficacy of pyriproxyfen and its mixture with organosilicon to B-biotype Bemisia tabaci.The laboratory bioassay indicated that pyriproxyfen had strong ovicidal activity against B.tabaci and high activity against B.tabaci nymphs,but had low toxicity to B.tabaci adults.After the adults were exposed to pyriproxyfen-treated eggplant leaves for 48 h,their oviposition on untreated eggplant leaves was not affected,but the egg hatching rate was sharply lowered,suggesting that pyriproxyfen had high transovarial activity.Organosilicon auxiliary agent did not show any synergistic effect when mixed with pyriproxyfen.Field trials showed that pyriproxyfen could effectively control the B.tabaci nymphs on eggplants,but could not effectively control the adults.

Abstract:The bioactivities of methyl eugenol (ME) against rice insect pests, the brown planthopper (BPH), Nilarparvata lugens, the leaf folder (RLF), Cnaphalocrocis medinalis, the striped stem borer (SSB), Chilo suppressalis, and their major natural enemies, a predator Cyrtorhinus lividipennis and parasitoids Anagrus nilaparvatae and Trichogramma japonicum were determined under laboratory conditions. The results showed ME had repellent, systemic and contact insecticidal activities against BPH. The nymphal mortality increased with raised ME concentrations. The LC50 value for BPH using an impregnated filter paper bioassay was 1025 mg/L which was much lower than that of 3778 mg/L obtained from an immersion bioassay. ME also had a contact toxicity against RLF larvae with a LC50 of 250 mg/L However, bioactivity of ME against SSB larvae was much lower than against RLF. Only 21.8% of 2nd instar SSB larvae died at 24 h after being treated with 8000 mg/L ME. In addition, ME also had contact toxicity to predator C. lividipennis and parasitic natural enemies A. nilaparvatae, T. japonicum, with LC50 values of 527, 105 and 123 mg/L, respectively. Even so, the toxicity of ME to natural enemies was much lower than that of chemical insecticides. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Mulberry (Morus) is an economically important woody tree that is suitable for use in sericulture as forage and in medicine. However, this broad-leaved tree is facing multiple threats ranging from phytopathogens to insect pests. Here, a Gram-positive, endospore-forming bacterium (ZJU1) was frequently isolated from healthy mulberry plants by screening for foliar endophytes showing antagonism against pathogens and pests. Whole-genome sequencing and annotation resulted in a genome size of 4.06 Mb and classified the bacterium as a novel strain of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens that has rarely been identified from tree leaves. An integrative approach combining traditional natural product chemistry, activity bioassays, and high-resolution mass spectrometry confirmed that strain ZJU1 uses a blend of antimicrobials including peptides and volatile organic compounds to oppose Botrytis cinerea, a major phytopathogenic fungus causing mulberry gray mold disease. We showed that the inoculation of endophyte-free plants with ZJU1 significantly decreased both leaf necrosis and mortality under field conditions. In addition to the direct interactions of endophytes with foliar pathogens, in planta studies suggested that the inoculation of endophytes also induced plant systemic defense, including high expression levels of mulberry disease resistance genes. Moreover, when applied to the generalist herbivore Spodoptera litura, ZJU1 was sufficient to reduce the pest survival rate below 50%. A previously undiscovered crystal toxin (Cry10Aa) could contribute to this insecticidal effect against notorious lepidopteran pests. These unique traits clearly demonstrate that B. amyloliquefaciens ZJU1 is promising for the development of successful strategies for biocontrol applications. The search for new plant-beneficial microbes and engineering microbiomes is therefore of great significance for sustainably improving plant performance.

Abstract:The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens Stål, has become a major threat in tropical Asian and China since the rice green revolution of the 1960s. Currently, insecticide application remains the primary choice for controlling this rice insect pest, but heavy use of insecticides poses dangerous risks to beneficial natural enemies and pollinators, and stimulates N. lugens reproductivity, and has caused a resurgence of the pest in the major rice-planting regions throughout Asia. Achieving the long-lasting goal of sustainable management of N. lugens requires understanding of the molecular basis of outbreaks of the pest and the development of environment-friendly pest-control strategies. Here, we review the recent molecular advances in N. lugens research on the aspects of its endosymbionts, virus transmission, insecticide resistance, and interaction between N. lugens and rice plants. We also put forward further research directions that may shed some lights on management of the rice pest.

Abstract:Tuta absoluta（Meyrick） is a devastating invasive pest originating from South America. It has spread rapidly to Europe, Africa, and Asia, and has invaded China in recent years, and now is a highly potential threat to the solanaceous crop industry in China. Due to its characteristics of leaf mining, fruit burrowing, short life history, high reproductivity, etc., its control effect relying on chemical pesticides is limited. Many theoretical studies and application explorations have been carried out for developing the biological control strategies for Tuta absoluta in the world, and a lot of biological control agents with high potential for usage have been screened. In this review, we summarized the research progress on the global biological control of Tuta absoluta, focusing on the parasitic and predatory natural enemy insects, the bio-control microbes, and the repellent plants and their chemical extracts. In the green control of Tuta absoluta in China, in-depth studies could be carried out on the introduction of biocontrol species suitable for the agricultural niche in China, the digging of local biocontrol resources, and the industrialization of these biocontrol organisms; meanwhile, the integrative utilization of these organisms could be promoted via the combined use of them and the ecological regulation of the agricultural landscape, so as to ensure the high-quality development of Chinese solanaceous crop industry.

Abstract:In recent years, with the rapid development of the sericulture industry, the pests of mulberry trees are also increasing. Diaghania pyloalis Walker is one of the main pests of mulberry trees, has strong fecundity and very large food intake, especially in Sichuan and Chongqing areas. In order to find out the insecticides which can effectively control D. pyloalis, the screening test of high-efficiency control efficacy was carried out. In the summer of 2020, the 3rd instar larvae of D. pyloalis were selected as the test objects, and the indoor bioassay of 10 insecticides on D. pyloalis was carried out, and the results of the indoor bioassay were tested by field experiments in the autumn. The results show that 2000 times liquid of Dursban, Spinetoram, Chlorantraniliprole, and 1000 times liquid of Dichlorvos and Phoxim had the best control effect on D. pyloalis. Secondly, 2000 times liquid of Imidacloprid and Chlorfenapyr had the better control effect on D. pyloalis. Finally 2000 times liquid of Pymetrozine and Cyromazine had poor control effect, and 1000 times liquid of Azadirachtin had the worst control effect on D. pyloalis. To control D. pyloalis, 2000 dilution of Dursban and Spinetoram, and 1000 times liquid of Dichlorvos can be used in sericultural production. When using Chlorantraniliprole to control D. pyloalis, the leaves of mulberry should be picked with long interval to avoid affecting the quality of cocoons, and it is not recommended to use Cyromazine, Azadirachtin to control D. pyloalis.
Genetic diversity and differentiation of Pealius mori Takahashi (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) in Yunnan, China

Abstract:Pealius mori Takahasshi is an important pest of mulberry trees, but little is known about its distribution and genetic differentiation. Eighteen populations of P. mori were collected from different sericultural areas in Yunnan Province. They were analyzed using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (mtCOI) subunit sequence cluster analysis. There were seven clades of P. mori present in Yunnan. Most P. mori in southeast, central, northeast, southwest, and west Yunnan were clade I, which was the dominant species of pests. Another potential dominant species was clade II, which was from east, northwest, and central Yunnan. P. mori of clades III–VII were sporadically distributed in various sericulture areas. The genetic diversity of P. mori was high, as indicated by the total haplotype diversity (Hd = 0.942), nucleotide diversity (Pi = 0.11734), and average nucleotide difference (K = 77.207). The higher genetic differentiation index (FST > 0.70) and smaller gene flow (Nm < 1) in most populations represented a higher differentiation degree. Tajimma's D and Fu and Li's D* neutral tests indicated that 14 populations of P. mori had population expansion, and 10 of these were limited to local areas. Analysis of the molecular variance of P. mori showed that the genetic variation mainly came from different regions (54.97%), and the variation within populations was the smallest (16.40%). Mantel test showed no correlation between genetic and geographic distance (r = 0.0667, P = 0.2490).

Abstract:[Aim] The objective of this research is to analyze and predict the potential geographical distributions of two important mirid predators Tytthus chinensis and Cyrtorhinus lividipennis,of rice planthoppers,and to study the effects of climatic factors on their potential geographical distribution.[Methods] Maximum entropy niche-based modeling (MaxEnt) was used to predict species geographical distributions based on maximum entropy.The distribution records of the two mirid species and a set of environmental predictor variables were used to model the suitable geographical distributions of the two species.[Results] The results showed that the principal geographical distribution areas of T.chinensis were Southeast China,East Asia,Southeast Asia and parts of the Indonesia or within the geographical biomes of the Oriental and Australia.The suitable distribution areas of C.lividipennis were relatively broader in comparison with those of T.chinensis.In addition to the distribution area of T.chinensis,C.lividipennis could possibly survive in Shandong,Hebei,Shaanxi and Yunnan provinces in China,and the Amazon region as well.The suitability of T.chinensis and C.lividipennis was found to be affected significantly by the precipitation in the warmest season and the mean diurnal range.Especially,the precipitation in the warmest season exceeding 500 mm and the mean diurnal range monthly below 10℃ are the more favorable conditions for the distribution of T.chinensis and C.lividipennis.[Conclusion] Our results revealed that the suitable distribution of these two predators is primarily affected by the precipitation in the warmest season and the mean diurnal temperature range monthly.This study provides some important evidence for successful biological control of the two mirids in these potential distribution regions.

Abstract:Different components of the mulberry tree (fruits, leaves, twigs, and roots) are rich in active compounds, and have been reported to possess potent beneficial properties, including antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-allergenic, antihypertensive, and neuroprotective. The mulberry and its extracts can effectively improve the growth performance and fitness of animals. They not only possess the properties of being safe and purely natural, but also they are not prone to drug resistance. According to the literature, the supplemental level of the mulberry and its extracts in animal diets varies with different species, physiological status, age, and the purpose of the addition. It has been observed that the mulberry and its extracts enhanced the growth performance, the quality of animal products (meat, egg, and milk), the antioxidant and the anti-inflammatory responses of animals. Furthermore, the mulberry and its extracts have antibacterial properties and can effectively moderate the relative abundance of the microbial populations in the rumen and intestines, thus improving the immunity function of animals and reducing the enteric methane (CH4) production in ruminants. Furthermore, the mulberry and its extracts have the potential to depurate tissues of heavy metals. Collectively, this review summarizes the nutrients, active compounds, and biological functions of mulberry tree products, as well as the application in livestock production with an aim to provide a reference for the utilization of the mulberry and its extracts in animal production.
Identification of Gonatophragmium mori Causing Mulberry Zonate Leaf Spot Disease and Characterization of Their Biological Enemies in Guangxi, China

Abstract:Mulberry zonate leaf spot disease (MZLSD) is an important fungal disease of mulberry trees, which seriously affects the productivity and quality of mulberry leaves. MZLSD has been widely reported in sericultural production areas in Guangxi, China, in recent years. In this study, the causal agent of MZLSD was isolated from symptomatic samples and identified as Gonatophragmium mori (Acrospermaceae) based on morphological characterization and molecular analyses using nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU rDNA). Pathogenicity tests confirmed that G. mori is the pathogen responsible for MZLSD. Furthermore, we isolated antagonistic endophytic bacteria (AEB) from healthy mulberry leaves. Plate confrontation experiments showed that the lipopeptide crude extracts (LPCE) of three endophytic bacteria can inhibit the growth of G. mori, and the diameter of the antibacterial circle reaches more than 60 mm when their concentration of LPCE is 200 mg/ml. Light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed that LPCE caused drastic changes in mycelial morphology. Fluorescence microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed that the LPCE-induced apoptosis-like cell death in G. mori hyphae. Finally, based on morphological and molecular features, we identified the three isolates as Bacillus subtilis DS07, B. subtilis DS32, and B. velezensis Q6, respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first time to identify G. mori by combining characterization and molecular analyses, and we provide timely information about the use of biocontrol agents for suppression of G. mori.
The Interactions of Natural Enemies and Transgenic Bt Plants

Abstract:The effects of transgenic Bt plants on the natural enemies of target pests and recent works in this area are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the interactions of natural enemies and transgenic Bt plants and how these interactions affect the rate of pest adaptation to these new resistant plants. The researches showed that although transgenic Bt plants had little or no harmful effect on the natural enemies, the interations of natural enemies and transgenic Bt plants acted as antagonism, additiveaction and synergism in controlling pests. How these interactions affect the rate of pest adaptation to transgenic Bt plants is also discussed.

Effects of Bt-Cry1Ah1 Transgenic Poplar on Target and Non-Target Pests and Their Parasitic Natural Enemy in Field and Laboratory Trials

Abstract:Increasing areas of artificial afforestation and poplar monoculture in China have led to serious problems with insect pests. The development of genetic engineering technology, such as transgenic modification with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) genes, provides novel solutions to the pest problem. We generated a Bt-Cry1Ah1 gene incorporating codon optimization and transferred it into Populus deltoides × P. euramericana cv “Nanlin895” using an Agrobacterium-mediated method. The resulting Bt-Cry1Ah1 transgenic poplars were planted in the field with permission from the State Forestry Administration in 2017. Field and laboratory studies were conducted in Jiangsu, China, to investigate the effects of these transgenic poplars expressing the Cry1Ah1 protein on target and non-target pests and their parasitic natural enemy. Target pests included Hyphantria cunea (Lepidoptera, Arctiidae), Micromelalopha troglodyta (Lepidoptera, Notodontidae), and Clostera anachoreta (Lepidoptera, Notodontidae). Plagiodera versicolora (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) served as the non-target pest. Laboratory trials showed that the six transgenic poplar lines exhibited resistance against the target insects. The corrected mortality rates of the target pest larvae fed leaves from the six lines were as high as 87.0%, significantly higher than that of the control. However, the corrected mortality rate of the non-target pest larvae was markedly lower and did not differ significantly from that of the control. Field experiments showed that transgenic poplar exhibited resistance against H. cunea and M. troglodyta. Field mortality rates were slightly higher than laboratory mortality rates. In addition, we investigated Chouioia cunea (Hymenoptera, Eulophidae) as a parasitoid of H. cunea pupae that had been fed transgenic poplar leaves. The emergence time, parasitism rate, and abundance of C. cunea did not differ significantly from those of the control. Therefore, Bt-Cry1Ah1 transgenic poplar can be used to effectively control damage by target insect pests without negatively affecting non-target insects and parasitoids.

Abstract:In Taiwan, the agricultural policy, ‘Reduce the consumption of pesticide to half in the next 10 years’, was launched in 2017. Pesticide application, which results in contamination of food by chemical residues, pest resistance, and other adverse ecological effects, is a growing public and environmental concern. Pest control by natural predators is, thus, the best alternative. Biological control methods implemented based on insights obtained from studies on pest behaviour, rearing, and various crop management modes, increase the possibility of controlling pests in modern organic agricultural systems. More than a decade has passed since the first introduction of a predatory insect in Taiwan for pest control (in the 1990s). Predatory and parasitic natural enemies, including lacewing, predatory stink bugs, Orius, and parasitic wasps, were initially used for controlling thrips, aphids, spider mites, whiteflies, and lepidopteran pests. At present, there exists a wide range of integrated pest management (IPM) methods incorporating other non-chemical, biological, and agricultural methods. However, recently, there has been an increase in research and development on the utilisation of natural enemies of insects and the associated food safety issues. Mass production and release, storage, and handling techniques of insect predators and parasitoids have been successful in recent years. The final goal of present day research is to develop natural enemy products and provide an IPM-based model to farmers for using natural enemies in agricultural production systems, thereby reducing pesticide application and ensuring food security.

SIDE-EFFECTS OF COMMONLY USED CROP PROTECTION PRODUCTS IN PEAR ON TWO BENEFICIAL MIRIDAE BUGS

Abstract:Anthocoris nemoralis, Anthocoris nemorum and Orius spp. are not the only beneficial predatory bugs inhabiting pear orchards in Belgium. Quite often, the Miridae bugs Heterotoma spp. and Pilophorus spp. can be found during spring and summer in these orchards, thereby feeding on several pests such as psyllids, aphids, spider mites, ... . Side-effects are usually assessed on Anthocoris and Orius spp., but due to the potential importance of Miridae bugs in pest reduction, we tested some commonly used crop protection products used in pear cultivation on Heterotoma planicornis and Pilophorus perplexus (residue-based tests in petri-dishes). One day after treatment, mortalities already could be observed for some products. Seven days after treatment, abamectin, deltamethrin and thiacloprid were considered the most toxic products as stated by the IOBC classification. This outcome was then analysed with regard to different treatment schedules, providing insights in potential side-effects on crop protection treatments on the composition of beneficial fauna in pear orchards.

Abstract:The Pink Hibiscus Mealybug (PHM), Maconellicoccus hirsutus (Green) (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Pseudococcidae) is a quarantine pest in Colombia, however, there is little information on its distribution within the country and its natural enemies. Samples of PHM were collected in several locations in Colombia from different host-plant species and kept in breeding chambers to extract their predators and parasitoids. Two novel natural enemies of M. hirsutus were recorded, i.e., Allotropa cf. citri Muesebeck (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) and Leucopina nyiaybsa Gaimari & Montes, sp. n. (Diptera: Chamaemyiidae) described herein. Furthermore, information on the distribution range in Colombia of the parasitoids Anagyrus kamali Moursi and Gyranusoidea indica Shafee, Alam and Agarwal (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) is provided. A species of Pachyneuron (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) was found as a possible parasitoid or hyperparasitoid somewhere in this system. Currently, in Colombia, the PHM is not considered an agricultural pest and its damage is restricted to primary hosts such as Hibiscus spp., Malvaviscus arboreus (Malvaceae) and soursop Annona muricata (Annonaceae). Prochiloneurus dactylopii (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was found as a possible hyperparasitoid. However, the number of recovered hyperparasitoids was low compared to the primary parasitoids that emerged in breeding chambers, which may explain why these species do not seem to interfere in the biological control of PHM. Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and Leucopina nyiaybsa Gaimari & Montes, sp. n. are considered important predators of PHM.

Acaricidal and Insecticidal Activities of Essential Oils and Constituents of Tasmannia lanceolata (Poir.) A.C.Sm. (Canellales: Winteraceae) Against Tetranychus urticae Koch (Trombidiformes: Tetranychidae) and Myzus persicae Sulzer (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

Abstract:The negative side effects of synthetic pesticides have drawn attention to the need for environmentally friendly agents to control arthropod pests. To identify promising candidates as botanical pesticides, we investigated the acaricidal and insecticidal activities of 44 plant-derived essential oils (EOs) against Tetranychus urticae Koch and Myzus persicae Sulzer. Among the tested EOs, Tasmannia lanceolata (Poir.) A.C.Sm. (Tasmanian pepper) essential oil (TPEO) exhibited strong acaricidal and insecticidal activity. Mortality rates of 100% and 71.4% against T. urticae and M. persicae, respectively, were observed with TPEO at a concentration of 2 mg/ml. Polygodial was determined to be the primary active component after bioassay-guided isolation of TPEO using silica gel open-column chromatography, gas chromatography, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Polygodial demonstrated acaricidal activity against T. urticae with mortality rates of 100%, 100%, 61.9%, and 61.6% at concentrations of 1, 0.5, 0.25, and 0.125 mg/ml, respectively. Insecticidal activity against M. persicae was also evident, with mortality rates of 88.5%, 85.0%, 46.7%, and 43.3% at respective concentrations of 1, 0.5, 0.25, and 0.125 mg/ml. Insecticidal and acaricidal activities of TPEO were greater than those of Eungjinssag, a commercially available organic agricultural material for controlling mites and aphids in the Republic of Korea. These findings suggest that TPEO is a promising candidate for mites and aphids control.

Abstract:Abstract Predatory natural enemies play key functional roles in biological control. Abundant predatory arthropod species have been recorded in tea plantation ecosystems. However, few studies have comprehensively evaluated the control effect of predatory arthropods on tea pests in the field. We performed a 1‐year field investigation and collected predatory arthropods and pests in the tea canopy. A total of 7931 predatory arthropod individuals were collected, and Coleosoma blandum (Araneae, Theridiidae) was the most abundant species in the studied tea plantation. The population dynamics between C. blandum and four main tea pest species (Aleurocanthus spiniferus, Empoasca onukii, Ectropis grisescens, and Scopula subpunctaria) were established using the individual number of predators and pests in each month. The results showed that C. blandum appeared to co‐occur in the tea canopy with A. spiniferus, Em. onukii, and Ec. grisescens in a longer period. The prey spectrum of C. blandum was further analyzed using DNA metabarcoding. Among prey species, A. spiniferus, Em. onukii, and Ec. grisescens were included, and the relative abundance and positive rates of target DNA fragments of A. spiniferus were greater than that of other two pests. Combined with the high dominance index of C. blandum, co‐occurrence between C. blandum and A. spiniferus in time and space and high positive rate and relative abundance of target DNA fragments of A. spiniferus, C. blandum was identified to prey on A. spiniferus, and C. blandum may be an important predator of A. spiniferus. Thus, C. blandum has potential as a biological control agent of A. spiniferus in an integrated pest management strategy.
