Abstract:Arctium lappa L. is a prevalent medicinal herb and a health supplement that is commonly used in Asia. Over the last few decades, the bioactive component arctigenin has attracted the attention of researchers because of its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, multiple sclerosis fighting, antitumor, and anti-leukemia properties. After summarising the research and literature on arctigenin, this study outlines the current status of research on pharmacological activity, total synthesis, and structural modification of arctigenin. The purpose of this study is to assist academics in obtaining a more comprehensive understanding of the research progress on arctigenin and to provide constructive suggestions for further investigation of this useful molecule.

Abstract:Agrimonolide (AM), which is a derivative of isocoumarins, is found mainly in the herb Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. This compound is highly lipophilic and readily crosses the blood–brain barrier. In recent years, interest has grown in the use of AM as a multitarget natural treatment for various diseases, such as cancer, inflammation, hepatic injury, myocardial damage, and diabetes mellitus. The potential mechanisms of these pharmacological effects have been clarified at cellular and molecular levels. AM shows no cytotoxicity over a range of concentrations in different types of cells, providing evidence for its good safety profile in vitro. These findings indicate that AM is a promising medicinal agent. However, most studies on AM's pharmacological activities, mechanisms of action, and safety lack substantial animal or human data. Additionally, the pharmacokinetics, metabolism, and disposition of this compound have received little attention. This review highlights the status of current information regarding the sources, properties, pharmacological effects, and safety of AM. Furthermore, potential strategies to resolve problematic issues identified in previous studies are fully discussed. This summary and analysis of the research progress of AM may inspire deeper investigations and more extensive applications of AM in the future.

Abstract:Artemisinins was derived from Artemisia annua L.Many pharmacological effects of artemisinins had been confirmed,such as antimalarial,antitumor and antischistosome,but the mechanisms and property of pharmacological effects had not been recognized clearly.In this paper the research progress on the pharmacological effects of artemisinin and its derivatives was summarized and its mechanism of the pharmacological effects also was discussed to provide references for the exploitation and utilization.

Abstract:Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus (AMB) is increasingly becoming popular as an edible vegetable or traditional folk medicine in East Asia due to its great health and medicinal properties. However, due to a lack of available research, the effective material of AMB still remains unknown. In this study, we applied a strategy utilising ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC/Q-TOF-MS) to investigate chemical profiles of AMB. In addition, metabolite profiles of five representative single steroidal saponins as well as AMB were investigated. Moreover, the metabolic features of saponins in AMB were summarised. After oral administration, the saponins underwent massive phase I and phase II metabolism. Sequential deglycosylation metabolism in rat intestine was the main metabolic pathway of the steroidal saponins, while oxidation, dehydrogenation, glucuronic acid reactions in liver also take part in further modification. These results expand our knowledge about the metabolism of AMB.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance Armeniacae Semen Amarum ( Prunus armeniaca L. var. ansu Maxim., Ku xingren, bitter almond, ASA) is an important medicine in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is widely used because of its remarkable curative effect in relieving cough and asthma, moistening intestines and defecating. Aim of the review This review aims to enlighten the deeper knowledge about ASA, giving a comprehensive overview of its traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology for future investigation of plant-based drugs and therapeutic applications. Materials and methods The databases used are Web of Science, PubMed, Baidu academic, Google academic, CNKI, Wanfang and VIP . In addition, detailed information on ASA was obtained from relevant monographs such as Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Results The active components of ASA mainly include amygdalin, bitter almond oil, essential oil, protein, vitamin, trace elements and carbohydrates. The pharmacological studies have shown that ASA has beneficial effects such as antitussive, antiasthmatic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, antitumour, cardioprotective, antifibrotic, immune regulatory, bowel relaxation, insecticidal, etc. Conclusions Many reports have been published on ASA's various active ingredients and biological uses. However, only a few reviews on its phytoconstituents and pharmacological uses. In addition, the exploration and development of ASA in other fields also deserve more attention in future research.

Abstract:The main components of Artemisia argyi Levl. et Vant. includ essential oils, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids and triterpenes. Researches show that blumea oil has the effect of preventing cough, making expectoration easy and resisting anaphylactic shock resistance. Blumea oil could resist myocardial contraction caused by adrenaline and histamine to reduce the myocardial contraction force, and also has certain effect on central nervous system. Flavonoids have the effects of antibiosis, antioxidant, promoting blood circulation for removing blood stasis, detumescence and relieving pain and immunosuppression. With the gradually deeper of researches on Artemisia argyi Levl. et Vant., it is found that the Artemisia argyi Levl. et Vant. has a great development value in many areas. In this paper, research advances of Artemisia argyi Levl. et Vant. pharmacological action and chemical components are summarized, in order to provide the scientific basis for the further research and utilization of Artemisia argyi Levl. et Vant..

Abstract:Astragali Radix is one of traditional Chinese medicines with effects in invigorating Qi for consolidating superficies, inducing diuresis to alleviate edema, promoting pus discharge and tissue regeneration. In recent years, the traditional Chinese medicine fermentation technology has received extensive attentions due to its high efficiency and safety. The pharmacological functions of traditional Chinese medicines could be further enhanced after microbial fermentation, which has a broad development prospects. In this paper, we summarized relevant literatures of Astragali Radix fermentation in such aspects as fermentation strains, fermentation forms, process optimization, active ingredients and pharmacological effects, in the expectation of providing a reference for development and utilization of Astragali Radix.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance The rhizomes of Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bunge., belonging to the family Liliaceae, are named ' Zhi-mu ' according to traditional Chinese medicine theory. It is a medicinal plant that has long been used as a tonic agent in various ethnomedicinal systems in East Asia, especially in China, and also for treating arthralgia, hematochezia, tidal fever, night sweats, cough, dry mouth and tongue, hemoptysis, etc. The arm of the review The review aims to provide a systematic overview of botany, ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, pharmacology, toxicology and quality control of Anemarrhena asphodeloides and to explore the future therapeutic potential and scientific potential of this plant. Materials and methods A comprehensive literature search was performed on Anemarrhena asphodeloides using scientific databases including Web of Science, PubMed, Google Scholar, CNKI, Elsevier, SpringerLink, ACS publications, ancient books, Doctoral and master's Theses. Collected data from different sources was comprehensively summarised for botany, ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, pharmacology, toxicology and quality control of Anemarrhena asphodeloides . Results A comprehensive analysis of the literature as mentioned above confirmed that the ethnomedical uses of Anemarrhena asphodeloides had a history of thousands of years in eastern Asian countries. Two hundred sixty-nine compounds have been identified from Anemarrhena asphodeloides , including steroidal saponins, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, alkaloids, steroids, organic acids, polysaccharides, benzophenones and other ingredients. Studies have shown that the extracts and compounds from Anemarrhena asphodeloides have extensive pharmacological activities, such as nervous system activity, antitumour, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antiosteoporotic, antiallergic, antiplatelet aggregation, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-ageing, hair growth promoting, preventing cell damage, etc. Evaluating the quality and toxicity of Anemarrhena asphodeloides is essential to confirm its safe use in humans. Conclusion Anemarrhena asphodeloides is widely used in traditional medicine and have diverse chemical constituents with obvious biological activities. Nevertheless, more studies should be carried out in animals and humans to evaluate the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in its biological activity and confirm its safe use.

Abstract:<p class="Para"><em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">Alstonia scholaris</em> (L.) R. Br (Apocynaceae), a tropical tree native to Indian subcontinent, Australasia, and Malay Peninsula is well documented in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda to cure fever, pain, inflammation, cancer, respiratory, and skin disorders. Nearly 169 alkaloids have been reported along with iridoids, coumarins, flavonoids and steroids from this plant. The highlights of current review are demonstrated in six tables encompassing ethnomedicinal values, pharmacological activities, phytochemistry, clinical significances, and patents associated with <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">A. scholaris.</em> The data analysis of these tables revealed the requirements to convert existed knowledge into finished products. For example, strictamine isolated from this plant has shown an equipotent antiviral activity to that of acyclovir. However, the discovery of such new potent antiviral indole alkaloids will require structure activity relationship studies with natural analogues of this scaffold. In conclusion, despite of over 100 patents and numerous pharmacological activities of <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">A. scholaris</em>, only one product has reached the market. Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Amomum villosum Lour. is a widely esteemed species of medicinal plant on a global scale. Its medicinal properties have been documented as early as the Tang Dynasty, particularly the fruit, which holds significant medicinal and culinary value. This plant is extensively found in tropical and subtropical regions across Asia. It possesses the properties of warming the middle and dispelling cold, regulating Qi to invigorate the spleen, harmonizing the stomach to alleviate vomiting, and nourishing deficiencies. In recent years, A. villosum has garnered global attention for its remarkable biological activity. Currently, numerous bioactive compounds have been successfully isolated and identified, showcasing a diverse array of pharmacological activities and medicinal benefits. Aim of the work: This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the research advancements in the geographical distribution, botany, traditional applications, phytochemistry, pharmacological activity, quality control, clinical applications, and toxicology of A. villosum. Furthermore, a critical summary of the current research and future prospects of this plant is presented. Materials and methods: Obtain information about A. villosum from ancient literature, doctoral and master's theses, and scholarly databases including Google Scholar, Web of Science, PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), ScienceDirect, plant directories, and clinical reports. Results: At present, about 500 compounds have been isolated and identified from various organs of A. villosum, including monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, diterpenoids, flavonoids, phenols, polysaccharides, and other components. Modern pharmacological studies have revealed that A. villosum exhibits exceptional biological activities in vitro and in vivo, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, liver protection, anti-tumor, hypoglycemic, anti-microbial, regulating gastrointestinal activity, immune regulation, regulating flora, anti-obesity, estrogen, and more. Some of these activities have found extensive application in clinical practice. Conclusion: A. villosum, as a well-established medicinal herb, holds significant therapeutic potential and is also valued for its culinary applications. Currently, the research on the active components or crude extracts of A. villosum and their potential mechanisms of action remains limited. Furthermore, certain pharmacological activities require further elucidation for a comprehensive understanding of its internal mechanisms. Moreover, it is strongly recommended to prioritize research on pharmacokinetics and toxicity studies. These efforts will facilitate a thorough exploration of the potential of A. villosum and establish a robust foundation for its potential clinical applications.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance Belamcanda chinensis (L.) Redouté is widely distributed in East Asia, such as China, Russia and North Korea. Belamcandae Rhizoma is the sun-dried rhizome of B . chinensis and has a long history of traditional medicinal use. It was first recorded in the Shennong's Herbal Classic , and has the effects of clearing heat and detoxifying, eliminating phlegm and benefiting the pharynx. Aim of the study To systematically study the source of Belamcandae Rhizoma, summarize the evolution of its medicinal properties, efficacy and the application history of its prescriptions, summarize its biological activity, phytochemistry, synthetic metabolic pathway and toxicology, and screen the Quality-Markers of Belamcandae Rhizoma according to the screening principle of traditional Chinese medicine Quality-Markers. Materials and Methods All information available on Belamcandae Rhizoma was collected using electronic search engines, such as Pubmed, Web of Science, CNKI, WFO ( www.worldfloraonline.org ), MPNS ( https://mpsn.kew.org ), Changchun University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Library collections, Chinese Medical Classics. Results The source of Belamcandae Rhizoma is B. chinensis of Iridaceae. It has a long history of application in China. It has the effects of clearing heat and detoxifying, eliminating phlegm and promoting pharynx. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that it has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidation, anti-tumor and other physiological activities, and is safe and non-toxic at normal application doses. At present, tectoridin, iridin, tectorigenin, irigenin and irisflorentin are identified as the Quality-Markers of Belamcandae Rhizoma. Conclusions As a traditional Chinese medicine, Belamcandae Rhizoma has a long history of application, and multifaceted studies have demonstrated that Belamcandae Rhizoma is a promising Chinese medicine with good application prospects. By reviewing and identifying the Quality-Markers of Belamcandae Rhizoma, this study can help to establish the evaluation procedure of it on the one hand, and identify the shortcomings research on the other hand. Currently, there are few studies on the anabolism and toxicology of it, and future studies may focus on its in vivo processes, toxicology and adverse effects.

Abstract:Lophatheri Herba (Danzhuye in Chinese) is derived from the dried stems and leaves of Lophatherum gracile and has a long history of use as a medicinal and food source. Flavonoids and phenolic acids are the main active ingredients in Lophatheri Herba, which produce diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic effects. Flavonoid glycosides and hydroxybenzoic acids are respectively the main structure in 44 flavonoids and 16 phenolic acids obtained from Lophatheri Herba. Modern pharmacological studies have found that the main chemical constituents of Lophatheri Herba play important roles in anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective and hypoglycaemic effects. Studies have demonstrated that flavonoid monomers, for example, luteolin, isoorientin, luteolin-7-O-β-D-glucoside and apigenin are more effective in exerting the above pharmacological effects. In addition, Lophatheri Herba is used in different food products as the main ingredient or as an accessory. This review describes Lophatheri Herba in terms of its chemical composition, pharmacological effects and efficacy, food development and applications, and clinical utility, and discusses the problems facing its use. This study provides valuable ideas and a scientific basis for the future development and use of L. gracile.

Abstract:Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz. (A. macrocephala) is a perennial herb of the genus Atractylodes. The rhizome of A. macrocephala (AMR) is its medicinal part. It primarily grows in Southeast Asia and function to invigorate the spleen and qi, drying dampness and removing water. It has long been used for cancer treatment, relieving inflammation, and improving gastrointestinal function, highlighting its remarkable medicinal value. This paper focuses on recent advancements in the traditional uses, phytochemistry, and pharmacology of AMR from 2018 to the present, while exploring its therapeutic and scientific potential. In recent years, more than 120 compounds have been identified in AMR. The primary active components have been identified as sesquiterpenoids, polysaccharides and polyacetylenes. Modern pharmacological studies have demonstrated that AMR has anti‐inflammatory, anti‐tumor, immunity enhancement, gastrointestinal function improvement, and other pharmacological effects. It is mainly employed in the clinical treatment of tumors and gastrointestinal diseases, showing promising developmental potential. Its mechanism may be related to reducing oxidative stress, inhibiting the expression of inflammatory mediators and factors, and alleviating apoptosis through related signaling pathways. It is hoped that this review can provide a theoretical reference and scientific basis for further systematic research and extensive clinical application of AMR.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance Artemisia anomala S. Moore (family: Asteraceae) is a traditional herb that has been used for medicinal purposes in China for more than 1300 years. In traditional and local medicine, A. anomala is widely used in the treatment of rheumatic, dysmenorrhea, enteritis, hepatitis, hematuria and burn injury, and it is also considered as a natural botanical supplement in some areas, a traditional herb with both medicinal and edible properties. Aim of the review The paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of A. anomala , covering its botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacological activity, and quality control, and to summarize the current research status in order to better understand the application value of A. anomala as a traditional herbal medicine and provide references for its further development and utilization. Materials and methods The relevant information on A. anomala was collected by searching a range of literature and electronic databases using " Artemisia anomala " as the key search term. These sources included both ancient and modern books, the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, as well as various online databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, Wiley, ACS, CNKI, Springer, Taylor & Francis, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Baidu Scholar. Results At present, 125 compounds have been isolated from A. anomala , including terpenoids, triterpenoids, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, volatile oils and other compounds. Modern studies have confirmed that these active components have significant pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, hepatoprotective, anti-platelet aggregation and anti-oxidation. In modern clinic, A. anomala is widely used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, dysmenorrhea, irregular menstruation, traumatic bleeding, hepatitis, soft tissue contusion, burn and scald. Conclusions Long-term traditional medicinal history and a large number of modern in vitro and in vivo studies have confirmed that A. anomala has a wide range of biological activities, which can provide rich resources for the discovery of promising drug candidates and the development of new plant supplements. However, the research on the active components and molecular mechanism of A. anomala is insufficient, and more mechanism-based pharmacological evaluation and clinical research should be carried out to provide a more powerful scientific basis for its traditional use. In addition, the index components and determination standards of A. anomala should be established as soon as possible, so as to establish a systematic and effective quality control system.

Pharmacological Research - Modern Chinese Medicine

Abstract:Anemoside B4 (AB4), as an important ingredient of Chinese herb Pulsatilla Chinensis, has been used in Chinese ancient medicine for thousands of years with exact therapeutic effects of anti-inflammation and anti-tumor. Due to its high potency and low toxicity, AB4 has caused more and more attention of researchers. In this paper, our article reviews the research progress on pharmacological actions and molecular mechanisms of AB4 in order to provide references for its development and utilization.

Abstract:A new scheme of the isolation of all fractions of polyphenolic compounds from wormwood-leaved ambrosia (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) collected in the budding period is proposed. The main components in the total extract are phenolcarboxylic acids (ferulic, isoferulic, caffeic, chlorogenic acids and caffeic acid glycoside) coumarins (scopoletin, scopolin, esculetin, esculin, umbelliferone, skimmin), and flavonoids (jaceidin, quercetin, isorhamnetin, isorhamnetin-3-rutinoside, quercimeritrin, isoquercitrin, and glycosides of xanthomicrol and 4′,5-dihydroxy-3,6,7,8-tetramethoxyflavone). Polymethoxylated flavonoids have been identified in ambrosia and characterized for the first time, including jaceidin (5,7,4′-trihydroxi-3,6,3′-trimethoxyflavone), xanthomicrol (4′, 5-dihydroxy-6,7,8-trimethoxyflavone), 4′,5-dihydroxy-3,6,7,8-tetramethoxyflavone, and their glycosides. The results of biological investigations of the obtained polyphenolic fractions showed their pronounced hepatoprotective properties (exceeding those of the well-known drug karsil) and hypolipemic activity (comparable with that of lipanor).

Abstract:Background Angelica dahurica (Hoffm.) Benth. & Hook. f. ex Franch. & Sav (AD) is a tall perennial herb named Baizhi in Chinese Medical Works. Its medicinal use was first recorded in Shennong's Classic of Material Medical , the first herbal monograph in ancient China. Aim of the review: This review systematically summarises and evaluates traditional applications, botany, chemistry, and pharmacology of AD. This review aims to support the researchers who would like to explore its further potential as a medical agent. Materials and methods The information was collected from Web of Science ( https://www.webofscience.com ), PubMed ( https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov ), CNKI ( https://kns.cnki.net ), Dissertations, Chinese Pharmacopoeia, and Government documents. The keyword used in the literature search was Angelica dahurica . The chemical structures of the compounds in AD were obtained from either research articles or PubChem. The historical origin and ethnopharmacology of AD were reviewed in detail. In addition, relevant information was obtained from regional and global unpublished sources. The plant's name and its classifications were confirmed using the Medicinal Plant Name Service ( http://mpns.kew.org ) and Plants of the World Online ( https://powo.science.kew.org ). Results Over time, AD has been used extensively for its medicinal uses. The bioactive chemical compound present in it is imperatorin (IMP). It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and other therapeutic effects, and it is used as a marker for the quality evaluation of AD. The most studied part of the plant is the root. The root contains coumarins and volatile oil. Modern science has found that AD has the ability to treat skin wounds, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-depressant, and antioxidant effects, etc . Conclusions This paper presents a detailed comparative analysis of available resources, confirming the origin, traditional applications, and therapeutic uses of AD. Most importantly, it is widely welcomed as a therapeutic drug. The results of several studies showed that the chemical components of AD were more deeply involved in the central nervous system and histopathological mechanisms. Moreover, AD not only has medical effects but also can be used as food condiments and food accessories. Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Ethnopharmacological relevance</h3><p><em>Artemisia argyi</em> H.Lév. & Vaniot is known as the longevity grass in eastern countries for its warm effect to cure many cold diseases. It has been widely used in medicine, food, bathing, moxibustion, and fumigation for more than two thousand years. Nowadays it even becomes the cultural symbol of the Dragon Boat Festival. In traditional application, <em>A. argyi</em> is considered to be an important hemostatic drug and a common drug for gynecological diseases. In modern application, the <em>Artemisia argyi</em> H.Lév. & Vaniot essential oil (AAEO) is regarded as the important medicinal substance of <em>A. argyi</em>, and has been made into many health products, forming a large-scale <em>A. argyi</em> industry.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Aim of the review</h3><p>This review aims to summarize the research status of AAEO and evaluate its application value. The manuscript focuses on the reported extraction methods, chemical components and influencing factors, pharmacological action, and toxicity.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Materials and methods</h3><p>In the literature search, several databases, such as Google Scholar, Science Direct, PubMed, Elsevier, CNKI, and Wanfang, were searched for key words, including "<em>Artemisia argyi</em> H.Lév. & Vaniot essential oil," "<em>Artemisia argyi</em> H.Lév. & Vaniot," "cineole," "caryophyllene," "cyclamen," "borneol," and "camphor."</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>At present, more than 200 kinds of chemical components have been detected in AAEO, including terpenes, ketones (aldehydes), alcohols (phenols), acids (esters), alkanes (olefins) hydrocarbons, and so on. It has great anti-disease-resistant microorganism, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-cancer effects in clinical treatment and has good development potential and application prospects.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusion</h3><p>Present review provides an insight into chemical composition, extraction method, quality influencing factors, pharmacological action and toxicological action of AAEO. As an important traditional medicine herb, remarkable efficacy has been demonstrated in comprehensive literature reports, which has shown the great medicinal potential of this plant. However, the toxicity of AAEO cannot be ignored, the exact mechanism of action remains to be elucidated.</p>
