Abstract:The species from Alangium have been used as folk medicine to treat rheumatism, skin diseases, diabetes by the people of Southeast Asia. Previous phytochemical studies have shown this genus are rich sources of alkaloids, glycosides, and terpenoids, which have attracted considerable attention of many researchers due to their markedly diverse and complex architecture. The crude extracts as well as the monomeric compounds from the title genus possess anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-oxidant pharmacological activities. Besides, some isolates from Alangium exhibited the effects on skeletal, smooth muscle and the nervous system. As a large genus of medicinal plants, the medicinal value of Alangium has been widely reported, but there is no review that provide a systematic summary towards its chemical constituents and pharmacological activities, to our knowledge. This work aims to present a comprehensive overview on the traditional uses, phytochemistry, and pharmacological activities of medicinal plants in the genus Alangium, and to explore the evidence supporting its ethnopharmacological effectiveness.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: The genus Albizia (Leguminosae) comprises about 150 species and some species have been used for the treatment of rheumatism, stomachache, cough, diarrhea, and wounds in traditional and local medicine. The aim of the review: This review article documents and critically assesses the current status of the traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology of the Albizia species. Materials and methods: All provided literatures on the Albizia species were searched using the electronic databases (e.g. Web of Science, Elsevier, Springer, PubMed, ACS, CNKI, Google Scholar, and Baidu Scholar), books, and theses with keywords of Albizia' and Albizzia'. Results: Albizia species have been used for melancholia, insomnia, wounds, fever, abscesses, diabetes, headache, stomachache, diarrhea, cough, rheumatism, snake bite, malaria, and parasitic infection in traditional and local medicine. These plants mainly contain triterpenoid saponins, flavonoids, lignanoids, alkaloids, phenolic glycosides, etc. Albizia species have been demonstrated to possess various pharmacological activities. Among them, the antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antifertility, antianxiety, antidepressant, and anti-fever properties are consistent with the traditional and local applications of the Albizia species. Conclusions: The traditional and local uses of Albizia species have been partially demonstrated by the pharmacological investigation. However, some traditional applications have not been assessed scientifically due to incomplete methodologies and ambiguous findings. Moreover, no clinical evidences support the health benefits of these plants. The systematic and comprehensive preclinical studies and clinical trials are still required to verify the pharmacological activities, clinical efficacy, and safety of Albizia species.

Abstract:The genus Alisma contains 11 species distributed worldwide, of which at least two species (A. orientale [Sam.] Juzep. and A. plantago‐aquatica Linn.) have been used as common herbal medicines. Secondary metabolites obtained from the genus Alisma are considered to be the material basis for the various biological functions and medicinal applications. In this review, we mainly focused on the recent investigations of secondary metabolites from plants of the genus Alisma and their biological activities, with the highlighting on the diversity of the chemical structures, the biosynthesis of interesting secondary metabolites, the biological activities, and the relationships between structures and bioactivities.

Abstract:Alpinae oxyphyllae fructus (AOF), the dried mature fruit of Alpinia oxyphylla Miquel of the Zingiberaceae family, shows many special pharmacological effects. In recent years, there has been an abundance of research results on AOF. In this paper, the new compounds isolated from AOF since 2018 are reviewed, including terpenes, flavonoids, diarylheptanoids, phenolic acid, sterols, alkanes, fats, etc. The isolation methods that were applied include the microwave-assisted method, response surface method, chiral high-performance liquid chromatography–multiple reaction monitoring–mass spectrometry (HPLC-MRM-MS) analytical method, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–quadrupole–electrostatic field orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-Orbitrap-HRMS) method, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method, hot water leaching method, ethanol leaching method, and so on. Additionally, the pharmacological effects of AOF found from 2018 to 2024 are also summarized, including neuroprotection, regulation of metabolic disorders, antioxidant activity, antiapoptosis, antiinflammatory activity, antidiabetic activity, antihyperuricemia, antiaging, antidiuresis, immune regulation, anti-tumor activity, renal protection, hepatoprotection, and anti-asthma. This paper provides a reference for further research on AOF.

Abstract:Alstonia R. Br. (Apocynaceae) is widely used in the traditional therapeutic systems. Due to its rich natural active ingredients, it is used in China, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Africa, Australia and other countries to treat malaria, dysentery, asthma, fever, epilepsy, skin diseases, snake bites, and so on. The aim of this review is to describe in detail the botanical properties, traditional uses, chemical compositions, pharmacological activities and toxicity of the genus Alstonia for analyzing the value of this plant in clinical applications. There was information on the genus Alstonia collected through the internet searches such as Baichain Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Baidu Scholar, PubMed, Wan Fang Database and ACS, etc. The keywords used include genus Alstonia , folk medicinal uses, botanical studies, chemical composition, pharmacological activities, bioactivities and other relevant terminology. The scientific names and geographic location of the genus Alstonia were provided in the Subject Database of the Flora of China, the Plant List ( www.theplantlist.org ), the WFO Plant List ( www.worldfloraonline.org ) and the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families ( http://wcsp.science.kew.org/qsearch.do ). Currently, at least 400 compounds were isolated from genus Alstonia , including alkaloids, triterpenes, flavonoids, volatile oils, phenolic acids, etc. Through extensive pharmacological experiments, it was demonstrated that genus Alstonia had good pharmacological effects in vitro and in vivo , including β 2 AR, vasodilatory, antifungal, antineoplastic, antiplasmodial, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, analgesic, and radioprotective activities, etc. Many studies also confirmed that the combination of the genus Alstonia with other traditional Chinese medicines could improve effectiveness. This review demonstrates that the genus Alstonia has high clinical application and medicinal value, which will bring the attention of pharmacologists and clinicians to the territory of natural products Additionally, bioactivity-related mechanisms and structure-activity relationships of chemical components are not clear. Only by bridging the gap between bioactivity-related mechanisms and structure-activity relationships of chemical components can the development of Alstonia plants be further promoted. Abstract:Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (AP), as a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been used for thousands of years in China. In this paper, the botany, traditional use, phytochemistry, analytical methods, quality control, pharmacological effects, and toxicity of AP were reviewed. It can provide a reference for the further research and lay a foundation for the rational clinical application of AP. The relevant information on AP was collected from scientific databases (such as Baidu Scholar, CNKI, Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, and SciFinder Scholar), Chinese herbal classics, Chinese Pharmacopoeia, PhD and MSc dissertations, and so on. The components which have been isolated and identified in AP include coumarins, volatile oils, organic acids, terpenes, polysaccharides, flavonoids, sterols, and trace elements. Most of them were analyzed by HPLC and GC. A pharmacological study shows that the AP has extensive pharmacological effects, including anti-inflammatory, antirheumatism, sedative and hypnotic, neuroprotection, antioxidation, antitumor, and allergy, and it is widely used in the treatment of the rheumatoid arthritis, knee osteoarthritis, lumbar disc, ankylosing spondylitis, headaches, stroke hemiplegia, Alzheimer's, and arrhythmia. AP is a valuable natural medicinal plant. So far, significant advances have been made in phytochemistry and pharmacology. Some traditional uses have been demonstrated by modern pharmacology. However, the chemical components and pharmacological effects of AP are complex and varied, and there are different standards for the evaluation of its quality and efficacy. The mechanism of action, the structure-activity relationship among the components, and the potential synergistic and antagonistic effects remain to be studied. At the same time, there are few studies on the specific compounds related to its pharmacodynamics. In order to better develop and utilize AP, we should establish a more reasonable, reliable, and accurate quality control standard and focus on the study of bioactive constituents and the demonstration of their mechanism of action.

Abstract:Alstonia scholaris (L.) R. Br (Apocynaceae), a tropical tree native to Indian subcontinent, Australasia, and Malay Peninsula is well documented in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda to cure fever, pain, inflammation, cancer, respiratory, and skin disorders. Nearly 169 alkaloids have been reported along with iridoids, coumarins, flavonoids and steroids from this plant. The highlights of current review are demonstrated in six tables encompassing ethnomedicinal values, pharmacological activities, phytochemistry, clinical significances, and patents associated with A. scholaris. The data analysis of these tables revealed the requirements to convert existed knowledge into finished products. For example, strictamine isolated from this plant has shown an equipotent antiviral activity to that of acyclovir. However, the discovery of such new potent antiviral indole alkaloids will require structure activity relationship studies with natural analogues of this scaffold. In conclusion, despite of over 100 patents and numerous pharmacological activities of A. scholaris, only one product has reached the market. Chemical research on some important medicinal plants

Abstract:This project is concentrated on the long-term basic research of chemical composition and function of important medicinal plants in China, and was intended to reveal scientific connotation of its effect on disease control and ecoadaptability, and to provide important clues for the discovery of new resources. The components from 220 important medicinal plants with identified traditional usage and natural competitive advantage were studied thoroughly by modern spectral and chromatographic analysis with internationally recognized molecular, cellular and zoogenic functional assessment, and their material basis and action mechanism were revealed. This project focused on the transformation from the superiority of medicinal plant resources and relevant knowledge to modern new drug development with a lot of important scientific data. The plant could not escape from any threat in nature but to defend itself from the drought, hot sunshine and attack from inscects and pathogenic bacteria by some of its relevant components. This project carried out long-term research on the analysis of the specificity of active compounds to reveal the relevance between ecoadaptability and composition, and found many new compounds with biological founction or significant chemosystematics, and illuminated spectroscopy regularity and bioactivity feature of relevant compounds. These findings revealing the pharmaceutical value and chemosystematics of these plants, help to provide significant clues for the research on new resouces of important compounds, to accumulate a lot of scientific data, with contributions to the research of natural products from other resources.
Alisma orientale: Ethnopharmacology, Phytochemistry and Pharmacology of an Important Traditional Chinese Medicine

Abstract:Alisma orientale (Sam.) Juzep. (Alismataceae) is a traditional and famous Chinese medicinal herb. Its rhizomes, which possess versatile bioactivities, are commonly used to treat oliguria, edema, gonorrhea with turbid urine, leukorrhea, diarrhea and dizziness. Approximately 120 compounds have been isolated from A. orientale. Terpenoids have been identified as A. orientale's characteristic constituents, which include protostane triterpenoids and guaiane sesquiterpenoids. The traditional medical uses of A. orientale in TCM have been evaluated in modern pharmacological studies, which have shown that A. orientale and its active constituents exhibit a wide range of bioactivities, such as diuretic, anti-urolithiatic, antinephritic, anti-atherosclerotic, immunomodulatory, and hepatoprotective activities. The medicinal potential of A. orientale makes it an ideal candidate for new drug development. Further studies are still required to identify its bioactive constituents, and elucidate the structure-activity relationship and detailed mechanisms of action. Additionally, the use of the other medicinal parts of A. orientale may reduce resource waste and afford novel secondary metabolites.

Abstract:The Papaveraceae plant family serves as a botanical reservoir for a variety of medicinal compounds that have been traditionally utilized in Chinese medicine for numerous generations. Growing attention towards the pharmaceutical potential of Papaveraceae has resulted in the identification of many alkaloids, which have attracted significant attention from the scientific community because of their structural complexity and wide range of biological activities, such as analgesic, antihypertensive, antiarrhythmic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-tumor, anti-cancer, and other activities, making them potential candidates for medical use. The primary objective of this review is to analyze the existing literature on the historical use of Papaveraceae plants, focusing on their alkaloid structures and relationship with pharmacological effects, as well as provide a theoretical basis for their clinical application, with the goal of unveiling the future potential of Papaveraceae plants.

Abstract:Astragali Radix is one of traditional Chinese medicines with effects in invigorating Qi for consolidating superficies, inducing diuresis to alleviate edema, promoting pus discharge and tissue regeneration. In recent years, the traditional Chinese medicine fermentation technology has received extensive attentions due to its high efficiency and safety. The pharmacological functions of traditional Chinese medicines could be further enhanced after microbial fermentation, which has a broad development prospects. In this paper, we summarized relevant literatures of Astragali Radix fermentation in such aspects as fermentation strains, fermentation forms, process optimization, active ingredients and pharmacological effects, in the expectation of providing a reference for development and utilization of Astragali Radix.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To review the current situation of alginate-based biomedical materials, especially focus on the clinical strategies and research progress in the clinical applications and point out several key issues that should be concerned about. METHODS Based on extensive investigation of domestic and foreign alginate-based biomedical materials research and related patent, literature, and medicine producted, the paper presented the comprehensive analysis of its research and development, application status, and then put forward several new research directions which should be focused on. RESULTS Alginate-based biomedical materials have been widely used in clinical field with a number of patients, but mainly in the fields of wound dressings and dental impression. Heart failure treatment, embolization, tissue engineering, and stem cells culture are expected to become new directions of research and products development. CONCLUSION Development of alginate-based new products has good clinical feasibility and necessity, but a lot of applied basic researches should be carried out in the further investigations.

Abstract:With increasing consumer awareness of the use of natural products in pharmaceuticals and medicine, it is noted that algae can be considered an appropriate source. Algae produce many bioactive components, which have application potential in pharmaceutical industries, such as fatty acids, phycobiliprotein, polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, carotenoids, and so on. However, it is still a long way before the truly widespread application of algae in medicine, and some research and technical bottlenecks still need to be resolved for further practical use. Here, we provide an in-depth review of the current understanding of algal-based medical application, with a focus on the main pharmaceutical activity and current application stage including in vitro , animal, and clinical studies. Furthermore, we propose some possible solutions to the obstacles that should be overcome for achieving the practical applications of algal-based medicine. Notably, animal and clinical studies on algal drugs and treatments should continue to push forward and expand for promoting the practical applications. Abstract:This study established a spectrum-effect relationship method for screening and quantifying the analgesic and anti-inflammatory active ingredients in Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (AP) by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometry detector analysis (UPLC-QDA). First, the fingerprint of AP was established to determine the common peaks. Next, six batches of AP samples, with significant differences, were selected for evaluation of pharmacological activity. Subsequently, the spectrum-effect relationship was used to screen the active ingredients. Finally, the screened ingredients were quantified using UPLC-QDA. In total, 21 common peaks were identified and four effective compounds (bergapten, columbianetin acetate, osthole and isoimperatorin) were selected using the gray relational analysis and partial least squares regression analysis. Quantitative analysis showed that the content of the four effective compounds was the highest in a randomly selected batch, S7 (Hubei). To our knowledge, this is the first attempt that evaluated the quality and spectrum-effect relationship of AP by quantitative analysis and chemometrics. This study identified the key pharmacologically active components of AP and thereby improved the quality evaluation system of AP. This method has broad application prospects for screening effective components and will be helpful in establishing more reliable, scientific and reasonable quality standards for AP and other traditional Chinese medicines.

Abstract:Astragali Radix (AR) is one of the well-known traditional Chinese medicines with a long history of medical use and a wide range of clinical applications. AR contains a variety of chemical constituents which can be classified into the following categories: polysaccharides, saponins, flavonoids, amino acids, and trace elements. There are several techniques to extract these constituents, of which microwave-assisted, enzymatic, aqueous, ultrasonic and reflux extraction are the most used. Several methods such as spectroscopy, capillary electrophoresis and various chromatographic methods have been developed to identify and analyze AR. Meanwhile, this paper also summarizes the biological activities of AR, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor and antiviral activities. It is expected to provide theoretical support for the better development and utilization of AR.
